... to ask your thoughts on age rating for Netflix / Amazon content

What are your thoughts on age 18 content on those platforms? I'm fairly sure that DD would not be allowed to an over 18 in our local cinema. However, they can access 18 content on Netflix.

I'd signed up for Amazon Prime a while back, and more recently DH for Netflix. Our kids use our account (I guess they can't be bothered to setup/switch profiles?).

Specifically our 16 year old DD has recently watched:

  • Unbelievable: I'd actually watched this myself a while back. It is VERY good. Working in legal system myself and involved in such cases, I didn't have a problem with this one. Felt OK she could watch it even though it is over 18. In fact the two lead female detectives are very positive characters.
  • Sex Education: Mixed feeling on this one. She told me she has started watching that (as have all her friends). I watched first episode to get an idea of what it is like. Most of the actors are supposed to be 16, yet the show is rated 18? That's rather strange.

At 16 I can't really control what she watches anyway ... I guess I'm happier she is watching this content at 16 rather than 14.

I’m always surprised there isn’t a password protection on the adult accounts

My dc have their own child accounts on Netflix, prime and Disney, yet they could easily go on my adult account and watch whatever they like

Lou98 · 31/12/2020 12:01

Probably an unpopular opinion but at 16 I think she's old enough to watch what she wants, including those aged 18. My mum never monitored what I watched at that age and I had my own Netflix account (that I paid for) if I didn't feel comfortable with anything I'd put on I'd just turn it off. The biggest issue of rated 18 is nudity and violence etc, she'll know about those issues at 16

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 12:02

You can lock your profiles on Netflix and put parental control on others. Not sure about prime

Mypathtriedtokillme · 31/12/2020 12:05

You can lock profiles on prime as well

Soubriquet · 31/12/2020 12:05

Can you?

Horehound · 31/12/2020 12:05

Sex education is fine!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 12:06

Yes

LST · 31/12/2020 12:07

At 16 I think she is old enough to watch sex education.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 12:07

Dang.
Yes. Go to the account settings online, not on app on Netflix. It's actually pretty good in what you can lock

Soubriquet · 31/12/2020 12:07

Aaah thank you!

I shall investigate

InvincibleInvisibility · 31/12/2020 12:08

You can lock your accounts on netflix. I have to put a code in to watch any film 13+ but there are other settings you can have (7+, 18+ etc)

bythebanksof · 31/12/2020 12:08

Personally I'd not have a problem with a 16 year old watching either of those two series. I can fully see why both series would be appealing to a 16 year old.

InvincibleInvisibility · 31/12/2020 12:08

Having said that I recently watched a 7+ film on netflix (by myself) and it should be at least 13+...

fruitpastille · 31/12/2020 12:08

Agree sex education is fine for a 16 year old. Mostly shows sex in a really positive way actually.

PerhapsOverlyWorried · 31/12/2020 12:08

Platforms like Amazon prime and Netflix etc rely on parents parenting their children around age restricted materials, but at 16 I think it’s up to her what she watches. You’re going to get nowhere telling her why to do at that age anyway!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 31/12/2020 12:09

Personally I’d have no issues with a 16 year old watching either

SilenceIsNoLongerSuspicious · 31/12/2020 12:13

We have a Netflix account for each person in the family so the 12yo can’t watch anything above 12, and the 8yo only PG and U. All pin locked, including the adult accounts, on every device.

Every device (including smart TV) is pin locked as well, because they all give access to YouTube which has some really nasty stuff that I don’t want my kids to stumble on.

TrialOfStyle · 31/12/2020 12:18

Sex education is absolutely fine for 16.

To ask you a question, OP - did you watch 18s when you were 16? I know I did. At home (TV in bedroom, sometimes with family - the really gruesome ones at friend’s houses).

What are your concerns about her watching 18s?

Redwinestillfine · 31/12/2020 12:20

You can set pins up for your accounts ( so if they want to watch adult content they can't without the pin). I have this set up so our 9 yo can't access 12's etc

TwoBrownSugars · 31/12/2020 12:22

@TrialOfStyle, I don't have a problem with her watching either of those series. I'd certainly seen 18+ stuff at 16.

What prompted my initial post was Sex Education actors supposed to being 16, but the series 18.

Ticklemynickel · 31/12/2020 12:25

I watched Queer as Folk as a 15yo, that was quite the education. 👀

I'd say those shows were fine for a 16yo. I question the ages on films/TV anyway, one of the recent Bond films was a 12A and the amount of violence in it was surprising.

I don't understand why this matters?

BreakOnThrough · 31/12/2020 12:28

Both those shows are very good, and they'd be OK for me for 16 year old. I guess these streaming platforms have to be careful from legal perspective with respect to content rating.

I'd agree with the post that SexED is sex positive. I wonder do that age group have so much school related sex? Does everyone orgasm so easily at that age? I guess I must have missed out :)

BillysMyBunny · 31/12/2020 12:44

I wouldn’t worry too much about age ratings considering she is 16, I think age ratings are somewhat arbitrary and the criteria for different ratings were set a considerable time ago. A lot of shows aimed at teens (Eg: 13 reasons why, sex education, skins, grand army) are rated 18, often this is because they contain references or depictions of sexual violence or drug taking but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is in a glorifying or graphic way.

Obviously it’s sensible to monitor what your DD is watching but I wouldn’t focus too much on the age ratings as an indicator of whether the show is relevant or not considering she is 16. I would lo d say the average 16 year old and 18 year old teen probably have similar life experiences anyway, gone are the days where 18 year olds are moving out and running their own houses at 18.Do you think your DD’s outlook now is massively different to how it will be when she turns 18, presumably in the next 18 months or so?
