To not understand what kind of person hates musicals

Love them. Love all musicals. I just don't understand how you can have people who like stories, and who like music, and they have this hatred of musicals.

There's also so many different types of musicals from Cabaret to Blood Brothers to Cats to Sound of Music, how could you dislike them ALL?

Is it about the singing preventing you from engaging with the story? Because it feels artificial? But surely all films and plays feel artificial? I just think there's no better way of getting huge amounts of info across quickly than in musicals. This scene from Les Mis for example, in one song you understand the conflict, both characters' motives and back stories.

Also isnt there a bit of snobbery here - theres no difference between opera and musicals except musicals are more fun.

I like them, but I don't like cartoons. It's not that I think there is anything wrong with them, but I've realized that people's faces and body language are really important to the story for me.

I imagine that people who dislike all musicals may feel similarly. It just makes it too difficult to really relate to the story in the same way.

I do think that a lot of musicals sound more or less the same and aren't that good. But the really good ones are great.

For some reason I also really dont like Cats, not sure why. Obviously Memory is a great tune but... Its a musical and it's about cats so it feels like it ticks all my boxes but somehow theres something missing there! I like the big dramatic stories in musicals so Les Mis, jesus christ, miss Saigon, blood brothers, the more upbeat ones leave me a bit cold (starlight express, grease etc)
I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. How can you not like Cats?! What kind of person doesn't like Cats? I just don't understand how people can dislike Cats!

I love.musuc but HATE musicals. I had to see 'into the Woods' a few years back and it gave me the rage. I felt murderous by the time it had finished

I really don't think Into the Woods is very good.

The songs sound like someone said "This is what the song in a musical sounds like. Write it like that."

LegArmpits · 12/04/2022 00:00

They are the most embarrassing thing on earth. Worse than a smear.

I just find the whole concept of musicals utterly ridiculous, and can't understand how anyone can view them with anything other than complete incredulity.

It doesn't matter how well written they are, how well performed they are, or how appealing the back story is, the fact remains, you have people spontaneously bursting into song and dance about the most banal of things, everyone knows the lyrics and it perfectly choreographed, and there's a hoofing great band hiding somewhere just out of shot.

I am autistic, and fully accept that it's just one of those things that ND people just don't get. I'm the same with fiction and brain-dead mass-market TV garbage like Stictly and Xfactor, but musicals are an order of magnitude more ridiculous than any fiction writing or consumerist TV.

There's suspension of belief, and there's suspension of brain function. Musicals are so pompous and puerile I'd have to literally switch my brain off to sit through one.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 12/04/2022 00:10

I don't like musicals.
I think they're naff.

AntarcticOwl · 12/04/2022 01:13

Love plays, live music gigs, movies. Didnt get la la land. No thanks for musicals, panto, opera, ballet or other performance "art". Fell asleep at several. Hope they die out with the next generation.

Ludoole · 12/04/2022 01:29

I love Les miserables, Phantom, Chicago, oh so many!!! The 3 I couldn't get my head around were Starlight Express, Cats and The Lion king, but that's purely because it's people pretending to be animals or trains... I dont like cartoons either.

CanadianJohn · 12/04/2022 02:58

I don't have a firm position... maybe when I grow up, if ever. I liked Westside Story (the 1966 movie), like the Mikado, hate Pirates, liked Mamma Mia on stage, hated the movie.

My greatest sin was dragging my long-suffering wife to see Starlight Express... I hated it, she hated it. We had won free tickets... now I know why they were free. Almost ruined our Las Vegas vacation.

CanadianJohn · 12/04/2022 03:00

sheesh... Westside the 1961 movie. In my defense, it was a long time ago...

Boxowine · 12/04/2022 03:17

No kind of person I want to know. That's who.

coldwaterfeed · 12/04/2022 03:29

Zombie thread but I’m annoyed that so many films are being turned into musicals now. It was probably ever thus but seems like a calculated money grabbing exercise.

lightisnotwhite · 12/04/2022 03:50

Jesus Christ Superstar 70’s film is bloody fantastic. Mostly because it’s so bizarre. I quite like Grease.

But paying good money to travel to a theatre to sit with other people and watch them live ,would be another circle in hell (weak joke).

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 12/04/2022 04:27

@lotusbell

Me, I hate musicals. I find the singing corny, OTT and hammy. Each song seems like extreme overacting and just a bit naff. But I'm perfectly OK with people who do enjoy them as we all like different things and it's not a personal slight if you do or don't. Hth.
This.
WeSellAnyBra · 12/04/2022 04:46

I like the old musical films - Guys & Dolls etc. but modern musical films are largely cringey and I find musical theatre almost always a complete borefest. It’s just so cheesy and simplistic and the music is usually shite.

Each to their own, though.

Keithlovessmash · 12/04/2022 06:47

I hate them.

But then again, I hate any sort of stage show or theatre (oh, apart from stand up comedy, I can watch that).

I just find it all mind numbing boring.

I don’t like musical films either.

Hesma · 12/04/2022 06:54

I love musicals… the cheesier the better! I’ve just booked to take my DDs to see Cinderella at the end of the Easter hols and couldn’t be more excited!
The so called jukkebox musicals are just wrong on so many levels. The flimsiest of stories built around existing songs. No talent in creating one of those. Conversely, Sondheim, Rogers, Hammerstein, hart, Novello and a firmament of similar talent created brilliant musicals where the songs and dances were an integral part of the story So piss off Mama Mia et al, welcome to Follies, Company, Sweet Charity, Top Hat....
LaurenKelsey · 12/04/2022 07:01

I love all types of music and I love films but I will never choose to watch a musical over a different genre of film. I want the song over with so the story can continue.

dayswithaY · 12/04/2022 21:02

I can't describe how much I hated Hamilton. Hours of words being belted out, very, very fast when something exciting was meant to be happening, and very, very slow when something sad and mournful was happening.

The whole thing just baffled me. Including the cult like worshippers all around me stamping their feet and roaring. The dancing was good though.

hangrylady · 12/04/2022 21:09

I like them but I find them very corny so I completely understand why people don't. I actually prefer the cheesy ones. I saw Les Miserables and it was excruciating for me, hated every second.

Seashor · 12/04/2022 21:26

Absolutely can’t stand them! In fact I’d fling them straight into room 101 with a cheery wave and no looking back.

Koigarden · 12/04/2022 21:29

Can take them or leave them.
