Wibu? Covid test for obvious tonsilitis?

DS 3 got his booster jags a couple of days before xmas and we were advised of all the normal side effects to expect including fever, rash vomiting. A few days ago he had a fever and was vomiting, the injection site was also very red and raised do we just put it down to the vaccination (live mmr). Last night I noticed a funny smell so checked his tonsils and they were covered in pus.

Poor little guy got tonsillitis for his 1st birthday and is now on his 6th bout in 2 years so we are quite used to it and his symptoms this time are consistent with previous times. The last time was only a month ago and that time we did do a covid test because the fever came in a couple of days before other symptoms.

Called GP first thing today and had to physically go to surgery for them to check and prescribe antibiotics. Was made to feel like an idiot for not having had him covid tested in the last few days (despite the nurse's guidance after jags) and insinuated that we were putting their staff at risk.

Wibu? We had a telephone consultation first where we discussed the situation in full and they never mentioned covid testing.

I'm really p**d off at being made to feel guilty. The last place I want to take my child or my pregnant self is to a GP's at the moment and I don't understand why they couldn't have just given us a prescription after the telephone appt.

Probably being a bit sensitive, covid testing a 3 year old is horrible anyway but the thought of doing it to his infected sore tonsils makes me really upset.

Also if anyone has any tips or experiences of recurring tonsillitis in kids I'm all ears!

Poor wee boy
Only thing I can say is that my son was the same kept getting reoccurring tonsillitis
It was awful he was so run down with it
At age 4.5/5 they put him on the waiting list to get them removed
Believe it or not he didn’t get them removed as all of a sudden he grew out of getting tonsillitis
He’s now almost 15 now and fit as a fiddle never really gets a cold never mind a sore throat or tonsillitis
So fingers crossed that your wee man will grow out of it too

My 5 year old nephew had obvious, blatant tonsillitis - such as you describe - in summer. They had to try to have him tested but he couldn’t manage, understandably. So tonsillitis or not, the whole family had to isolate for 2 weeks, on the basis that it could have been Covid as well as tonsillitis. You are not alone!

I thought my son had tonsillitis when he tested positive for Covid19. I was even more convinced when doing the test as his tonsils were very inflamed.

@christmashope19 Thanks so much, that makes me feel hopeful!!

@freddiethegreat I have never actually thought about one masking the other/having both at the same time! Luckily we have been isolating anyway out of fear of catching it so we will just keep this up for another couple of weeks.

Had to covid test my 5 month old because he had a cough. A phlegmy cough, streaming nose, no temp, and very very sore throat. Then it came back inconclusive so he was swabbed again. It was horrific! After being diagnosed over the phone twice with a ‘cold’ but still being told to get a covid test.. the dr also said she was ‘positive’ he didn’t need antibiotics (how would she know?! She hadn’t seen him?!) I ended up at the walk in centre with antibiotics for his CHEST INFECTION. Infuriating. Then again I couldn’t get a GP to see my 12 day old covered in swelling and hives. The GP provision for the last few months here has been inexcusably horrific. We ended up at a&e because nobody would see us.

Christmasmum3 · 30/12/2020 22:34

That is awful @amanduh, you must have been so worried.

I had to get tested with mastitis - someone somewhere will be the unlucky one to have both, and so it needed to be ruled out.

We've had to get our two year old tested and it's just the nasal swab, and not as far as it is for adults. I barely got the swab in but did enough for it not to give an inconclusive result. I think at 3 you can do the same.

Sometimes common sense needs to prevail. It was obvious your DS had tonsillitis, he’s had it lots before so you know the symptoms. He needed antibiotics ASAP, not a covid test and a wait for the result.

I got tonsillitis all of the time as a child and when I was 16 ended up having quinsy. Worst pain of my life, far worse than childbirth. I was hospitalised for a week and had to have my tonsils drained just to clear my airways. It can be dangerous if left untreated.

I completely agree. Common sense has left in large swathes about 9 months ago.

No idea @Countdowntonothing that would have been so much safer for everyone!

Like others have said common sense is in short supply at the mo.
