AIBU to be angry to be Trespassed by a dog

First time poster in this name.
See diagram (I don't need reminding!)

We live in house (1) on the end of a cul de sac, intentionally bought due to having noone pass the door given the closeness of front door (2) to the road.
When we viewed in February, checked with agent and developer there was no intention to provide access through the hedge and confirmed as negative.

Before moving in it appears dog walkers have forced a gap in the hedge (3) due to the crap (middle - 4) fence at knee height by the hedge. The fences by the houses are 6ft and great. Understandable to an extent but bloody frustrating as nothing I can do as it's not my land to adjust the fence and the developer seems feckless! We've been tolerant, but in the last week a dog has forced way into our home when we've been trying to go out, and today same dog jumped at the handle and managed to open the door and get in due to a feckless owner being the wrong side of the hedge and dog off lead.

Dog got in, scared the crap out of 2yo, was pushed away by me (also scared crapless) and after what felt like a lifetime, retrieved by owner (end house of the cul-de-sac) who didn't even acknowledge, just walked off.

Maybe I should have the door locked and bolted to prevent, maybe I should spread chilli oil over the (MY) pavement outside to irritate the dogs when they sh*t there and the door to minimise this happening again.

AIBU to report a dog out of control, and put the dogcrap through neighbour's letterbox?

Who are these mythical dog wardens who sort out all the problems ?!

GreenlandTheMovie · 31/12/2020 11:07

A similar thing happened to someone I knew who had horses (loose dog kept appearing in one of her fields and running about her garden). Apparently, she got so sick of it that one day she lured the dog into her horsebox, drove it to a spot miles away and dumped it (hopefully away from sheep!)

The owners did somehow get it back but the police ended up getting involved somehow and there is no more loose dog problem.

Go round with an empty chocolate wrapper, and tell the owner their bloody dog has eaten your children’s Christmas chocolate.

An expensive trip to the vet should encourage them to keep the dog on a lead.

[quote Didicat]What about something like this?

I would put one of these up immediately.

Some dog owners are a disgrace.

You are NOT at fault here OP.

I would also be looking to block access and I would be quoting the EA and builder who assured you before you purchased.

You need to become a right pest to them.

Oh dear, just realised 2 of my exterior doors have handles (that will teach me).

But they are heavy double-glazed. Would have to be a huge and very coordinated dog to open either of our doors. So still puzzled, actually.

Calmandmeasured1 · 31/12/2020 11:38

I would ask the developer to fit a sturdy 6' fence and, if he wouldn't stand the cost, I would offer to do so. (or I would make one appear in the dead of night Grin).

Plant something prickly and fast growing? I know its not your land but I would

@lljkk

How many dogs can open exterior doors -- how many exterior doors have handles to use to open? Confused

Anyway, different door might sort this out.

I had a lakeland terrier (14'5 inches at the shoulder) that could open doors that had round door handles. Lever handles were a doddle for him. If pushing a lever handle down didn't work, he would flip the lever upwards while jumping at the door.

He taught himself this when we stayed at a friend's one weekend. Her husband was very surprised when the dog strolled in on his own.

We never fathomed how he managed the round door knobs though.

Report the dog being out of control. Hope your DC is too young for it to affect them.

LaceyBetty · 31/12/2020 12:23

I can't believe posters are suggesting the OP is somewhat at fault for not locking her door.
