To ask for help with a short let

We have to move out of our house for 3 months due to a damp issue and extensive renovation. I need a short let while it’s fixed but airbnb is outrageously expensive.

Sussex, Surrey and Wiltshire would all be ok but I’m open to anywhere in the south west of England really. Any ideas where I can look? Rightmove has next to nothing on there.

You might struggle with Airbnb or holiday lets as my own holiday cottage insurance prevents stats of more that 28 days. You might need to move a couple of places.

You'd be better off with a proper AST but agree a shorter term.

Chipsandchesses · 29/12/2020 21:18

Ah that’s interesting- I didn’t realise that! What’s an AST?

short assured tenancy? A short assured tenancy gives landlords some protection and freedom of action when letting their properties.

Chipsandchesses · 29/12/2020 21:22

Sorry :) I did google that straight after - I wasn’t being lazy Grin thank you!

How much would a 6 month contract cost compared to a holiday let? Would also give the work time to overrun!

Chipsandchesses · 29/12/2020 21:25

Well, you make a good point but I’ve already given myself some fat in there as the builder is saying 9 weeks (but I’ve seen grand designs god damn it) so I’m looking at 12 weeks!

I've used this place. Between house moves, it wasn't cheap and cost roughly what a 6 month tenancy would've cost but we really hit a brick wall with EAs and our requirements.
We were there for 3 months 4 years ago.
It's just outside of Crawley, West Sussex.

Looking at this now

Do you need to move all your furniture and stuff out as well?

A 3 month “short let” plus storage would easily cost as much as, or more than, a 6m AST. I would get a 6m unfurnished let, and then try to negotiate out of it earlier.

Chipsandchesses · 29/12/2020 21:38

We were going to put all of our furniture into his mothers house (we can store everything in the garage) so prefer furnished as it seems easier (probably isn’t thinking about it)

@FrankiesKnuckle thanks for that link - what were the apartments like? I’ve messaged them on WhatsApp. Is there much “talking to the neighbors?” (I hate that Grin )

They were fine, not the ritz but!

Looking at the current photos it looks like it's had a bit of a refit since we were there.
We had a 3 bedroom ground floor apartment iirc.
A couple of people we briefly chatted too (because the kids loved their dogs) but other than that everyone kept themselves to themselves, it's not like a holiday village!

It's a fair drive from anywhere but close to A23, A24 and M23 and a couple of nice villagey pubs a couple of miles up the road in Rusper.

I can't really remember much else, very stressful moving effectively 3 times in 3 months, my husband sorted out the paperwork. But it served a great purpose.

Serviced apartments? You can usually work out a really good deal for fixed dates longer term. And it will get cleaned etc :)
