Mirena coil advice please

May come across as a bit stupid so I apologise if I'm asking a very obvious question. I'm on my 2nd mirena coil so really should know better but I'm pretty sure my coil was due to be changed this month, I'm sure I had a reminder last time but no correspondence this time round. Due to a lot of personal circumstances and being busy working in retail I've not really thought about it until now.
I'm not sure if was due to be changed between Oct this Yr or next month. My question is how long am I still protected, does it have some sort of expiry date? I'm starting to panic as there were health reasons for having the coil, I'm scared of being in the position of an unexpected pregnancy. Any advice welcome... And yes I will be calling the clinic in the morning!!!

I have a Mirena, it was due to be changed June just gone but the GP isnt doing them currently because of Covid. She said the manufacturers issued a statement saying that they probably continued to work for around a further 12 months. My GP said I could take the pill in the mean time if I wanted to. I think if you are close to menopause they leave them in for longer.

I was told by a nurse they’ve extended the guidance of how long it protects you due to Covid, so it is obviously capable of longer protection, but it is only licensed for a certain duration. It won’t suddenly cease working when you hit five years. That said, I’d probably look to get it changed and don’t expect a reminder.

I was told it had been extensed to 5 years but given the mini pill to take in addition

Thank you for the reassurance. Unfortunately I can't take the pill for health reasons, hence the non hormonal coil but feel a lot better thanks

Mine has been in for 5 years and 3 months, GP not doing them at the moment. I've not had a period so guess it's still working and not worried yet.

User0ne · 29/12/2020 18:17

They normally last 6-12 months longer than the 5 years they give you. I'd arrange to get it sorted soon

Monkeytennis97 · 29/12/2020 18:21

Mine has been in for 6 years and 3 months now... don't think it is working as well as have sporadic periods where nothing before. Was due to have it changed last March (day of lockdown!).

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 29/12/2020 18:59

Don't forget to abstain for at least a week before having the old one removed - I did not do this (the removal was rather ad hoc while having another procedure done, no advice given and no questions about whether or not I'd abstained beforehand) my surprise ds is 5 now....!

Boxoffestivefizz · 29/12/2020 21:46

@Zigzagintotheblue
That's what I'm worried about, I haven't been abstaining and to be honest my sex drive has been a lot higher than normal which is what happened when I was pregnant with my 2nd. I've never had normal regular periods since having the coil, just random spots and old blood here and there. Think that's why I'm so worried
