And now it seems we can't export chilled sausages to the EU.

I hope that doesn't mean we can't import items such as Bratwurst or salami from the EU....

This story reminds me of the classic ‘Yes Minister’ episode in which Hacker had to deal with Europe re-classifying the British sausage as the ‘emulsified high-fat offal tube’. Xmas Grin

Salami is cooked though?

Well - based on very limited research, it looks like Germany is a top exporter and the UK is a top importer

why would you want to stop salami and bratwurst coming in? if people want to buy it, let them? How small minded!!

I said:

I know it's a few negatives - but it means I hope we can import salami and Bratwurst.

I'm sure the Germans will cope without our sausages, but the point is well made about this detail being forgotten.

I doubt they're British style sausages though that are being exported from Germany.

Wasn't there a suggestion a while back about the EU not allowing British sausages be called sausages because they have such a low meat content?

Costacoffeeplease · 29/12/2020 18:04

They’re not allowing chilled meats to be imported into the EU, only frozen

Nooooo! DS asked for some British sausages for his birthday. Sad

Maybe I was imagining it then. Yes, Minister was brilliant.

@Hollybutnoivy - Nooooo! DS asked for some British sausages for his birthday.

Why? Awful things.

tommika · 29/12/2020 18:22

There is no story in that article:

The updated 1,426-page Brexit deal between the UK and the EU says that each will have its own independent “sanitary” rules on products of animal origin, which means that products from either side must first pass specific checks before being allowed to be exported.

Post Brexit we can set our own rules, which may or may not conform with EU minimum standards. If we don’t comply with the standards then we have issues exporting, if we do conform with standards we don’t have issues exporting.
As a country that’s external to the EU our exporters need to produce more documentation.

Funny that an article with a deceptive title thanks the reader for reading the full article
Thank you for taking the time to read this news article “British Sausage-Makers Banned From Exporting To The EU After Brexit”.

Stories claiming the EU would not allow British sausages to be called sausages related to the meat in the sausage, for example the agreed standard on the amount of pork required to qualify for being a pork sausage.

Similar to the other exaggerated stories such as the curve of bananas. If a banana didn’t meet each defined standard then it couldn’t be sold as that standard, unlike tales told by Farage etc that didn’t prevent items being sold.

The actual story @tommika

www.gov.uk/guidance/exporting-animals-and-animal-products-to-the-eu-from-1-january-2021#restricted-and-prohibited-goods

EU rules mean you will not be able to export the following goods to the EU:

chilled minced meat (red meat)
chilled meat preparations (for example, raw sausages)
minced meat (poultry)
poultry and ratite or game bird mechanically separated meat
raw milk from TB herds
ungraded eggs
composite products containing dairy products made from unpasteurised milk (for example, a ready meal topped with unpasteurised cheese)

There was a news report a few weeks ago about this and the “risk” of Northern Ireland being affected by these new rules. The headline was something along the lines of:

“Fear not! Belfast and Ballymena will still be able to get their British Bangers”

Except I don’t know a single person here in NI who would choose to eat a “British Banger”. Northern Irish meat is some of the best in the world and our sausages are pretty damn good - yous can keep yer British bangers - we don’t want them!

But can be exported as frozen (where applicable) and other negotiations are required if we want to export them as is.

We left the EU, so our terms as members of the EU no longer apply, we are just another foreign country now
