I regularly shop in my local M&S and there have been a number of instances where the staff have been rude when speaking to me through no fault of mine. A number of years ago whilst queuing for clothes even if there was no queue you had to wait for a member of staff to check your items (this now no longer applies). I waited no queue no member of staff to check items and empty cubicles. I got fed up waiting for member of staff so went in an available cubicle only to be confronted by a member of staff whilst half undressed a few mins later saying in a rude tone and stern expression ‘Thought there was nobody in’.
Whilst I was nosying at some food a member of staff was reducing on a trolley they piped up in a stern rude tone ‘you cannot take anything until it’s on the shelf’. 2 occasions this happened.
And during this COVID situation which I know is frustrating they told me off and shouted at me for not keeping my distance just before I’d had chance to stop within 2 metres! And recently when they’d just implemented a one way in the store and one way out. I didn’t realise this was in place and when I was heading towards the entrance to leave I was literally rudely shouted at me across the floor from quite a distance ‘you can’t go out that way’!
And the other day I’d finally decided to buy some boots I’d had my eye on and they’d none left in store. Yet next to the shoes I noticed some green stacked baskets with the boots in that I’d had my eye on that looked like they were waiting to be put out. So I asked a member of staff near by who wasn’t dealing with the shoes who said it should be ok to look in basket, so I did. Then a member of staff who was obviously dealing with the shoes noticed and came over and bit my head off saying ‘they’re not in the sale, they’re just waiting to be put out’ I explained why I was looking and she just wheeled the trolley away. So I asked a member of staff on the counter if the nearest store that i saw online that had the boots in my size would if they’d deliver as that store is a bit for for me to get to and she in a rude tone said ‘no it’s not possible, but we may get some returns in here’. I work in retail myself and I understand that stores have there own policies but that doesn’t give staff the right to be rude to customers! I’ve always been told to be chatty and pleasant when dealing with customers. As much as I love M&S I feel as though I shouldn’t be shopping there anymore! Do you feel I’ve been treated badly.

@Edith12

Agree about writing a letter it’s fascinating to me how the “staff mental health” crowd using mental health as an excuse for rudeness and being obtuse don’t seem to have a care in the world for customers mental health
Staff have no choice but to go into work, customers have the option of shopping elsewhere or online if being reminded of the covid regs hurts their feels too much
LoveNote · 29/12/2020 12:30

@Becca19962014 thats really sweet and kind of you, very much appreciated i'm sure

Edith12 · 29/12/2020 12:32

lol upset? nah not upset me AT ALL...but people do need to be corrected from time to time on mumsnet. i find it hilarious

I don’t think they do I find it a little creepy how many retail staff are relishing this new found control. Seriously weird. I think you actually are upset by how strangely defensive of people who clearly behaved badly you have been

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/12/2020 12:32

@Goodbye2020Hello2021

So you don't wait to be shown to a changing cubicle, poke around the reduced trolly before the stuff has been put back on the shelf and want stuff out of the delivery crate the minute it leaves the stockroom? Who is the rude one again OP?
Exactly. Although in fairness it sounds as though there was no one there at the changing rooms. But the obvious question is were the cubicles even open? I presumed they were still shut.
Edith12 · 29/12/2020 12:34

@MadameButterface not everyone is able to do online shopping and yes they do have to come in if they want to eat that is. No no issue with the covid regs themselves just the jobsworth enforcement often against those same guidelines. Sorry if retail staff not being able to lord power over people just trying to go about their business hurts your feels

edith lovey ,already explained that i have a team of youngsters, aged 16 up who have all been assaulted at least once on the tills .......think about that ......mumsnetters kids, assaulted,at work....nice? and you are hoping, clearly that i'm upset?? weirdo
queenMab99 · 29/12/2020 12:35

I have always found M&S staff to have a superior attitude, I don't expect reverence, but I expect to at least be treated as an equal. I used to shop there because the quality was good, but apart from knickers and pyjamas, I don't buy much there any more as the clothes are dull even for a 70 year old. I also buy on line now, so don't have to put up with the staff.

DuchessofDerbyshire · 29/12/2020 12:36

I have no sympathy for anyone doing non-essential shopping in a pandemic when we are advised to limit contact.

as Tier 5 is bound to arrive any day.

Joinedtosayhello · 29/12/2020 12:36

Life is too short to worry about such things. Perhaps the staff were having a bad day, perhaps you were. Who knows and does it really matter. It’s in the past now. The best way to deal with these sorts of situations is just to smile and crack on with your day. Far better than dwelling on it.

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 12:36

@Seeline

In my local M&S it's a miracle if you can find a member of staff! Even on the tills there are usually only 1 or 2, with loads of tills shut and huge queues. If you can find one, they are usually in a huddle with several others having a good old natter, and seem really put out that a customer might want to ask a question.
This sounds like my Boots. I've not been in there since February. Superdrug is so much better.

Assault is a criminal offence and should be reported in the usual way but that’s not what we are talking about here. Just because one customer has behaved badly does not give staff the right to behave badly to other customers who wouldn’t dream of behaving like that. Although of course the assault is wrong perhaps they should try and not police others that might help. Definitely not hoping you are upset but you clearly are and I find it bizzare this cult that seems to have formed around retail workers

TutiFrutti · 29/12/2020 12:39

OP I think you've answered your own question, if you don't like shopping there for whatever reason then don't.

Becca19962014 · 29/12/2020 12:40

plussizejumpsuit No, was making a point about customers generally. We don't have shops like m&s where I live. I didn't even know I'd posted as I thought I'd clicked preview and MN gave me an error message!

My point is customers don't really change regardless of the shop.

I did rethink posting hence not coming back to the thread and then saw the replies.

There's always one.

I happen to be it today on this thread!!

I've never really understood why you need permission to try something on, and what are the changing room tags about (ie the ones that they programme to say that you eg have 3 items - seems tech for tech's sake)? They don't exactly stop determined shoplifters, you don't bother trying on if you want to nick something.

I can imagine it's annoying if someone gets in your way when you are putting stock out (reduced or not) but if you've been waiting for a certain item you don't want to have to wait any longer. You could go away and come back but if you're like me you will then forget the item and be cursing when you get home (and sometimes I do remember, and they are still putting stuff out, so you can't wait indefinitely). It's not like things need to be priced up anymore, all you are doing is putting them on a shelf, so does it really matter if someone takes something off your trolley instead?

Vitaminsss · 29/12/2020 12:42

M&S has amazing customer service, and I’m not even their target clientele. I’m 23 and still pass for a student when I’m not dressed for work, yet they’re always lovely to me.

However, as someone that used to work in retail, I can see how some of your actions would annoy someone working in retail. You probably were too close and overfamiliar with their store. I would never go rooting in delivery baskets, just ask the staff member to fetch what you need as they’re not for public perusal.

Because I have my own retail experience, I always keep well away from staff reducing items. I can imagine it’s stressful when a horde starts forming, hovering and fighting over yellow sticker items, I don’t want to contribute to that so I’ll visit the other aisles and come back later. It only takes staff a few minutes to reduce the items and move on? I make sure to keep the 2m distance with COVID too.

Iamthewombat · 29/12/2020 12:43

For anybody bemoaning the lack of staff in M&S, or any other high street store:

Are you the same people who buy £5 jeans from Primark and expect other stores to sell jeans at the same price?

Are you the people who complain that M&S don’t make their clothes in Britain any more, whilst simultaneously expecting £5 jeans? (Although Boohoo found a way of squaring that particular circle with the sweatshops in Leicester).

Are you the people who prefer to buy cheap clothes online then whine about high street stores closing down and making your local town centre a less desirable place to shop?

Why, oh why, might high street stores seek to cut costs by having fewer assistants? Think really hard about it.

Ginfordinner · 29/12/2020 12:43

I have always found M&S staff to have a superior attitude,

I have never come across this. Are you sure it isn't because you think yourself inferior in some way?

I have worked in retail and know just how tiring it can be when you are on your feet all day. A kind word or friendly politeness from a customer goes a long way, and I can honestly say I have never been served in any shop by a rude shop assistant.

If you treat somenone with respect you usually get respect back. It cuts both ways.

Not everyone can afford expensive clothes

My local Co-op has really rude staff. When lockdown was first started, I remember them shouting at customers to stand on the floor markers to queue to pay. Everybody was. One cashier then said we were all a load of “thicko muppets” to her colleague. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I said hello and thanks to the cashier and she just grunted at me.

I am always polite to retail staff, follow instructions etc and appreciate the job they do but since Covid, a few of them have become pretty rude.

Oh OK I was thinking do m&s have pharmacies?!

I agree about customers. Some are lovely. But people can be so unreasonable! I don't know if its something about the shop environment or they would be this rude anyway? Honestly when I worked at Waitrose it made me question my faith in humanity!

SirVixofVixHall · 29/12/2020 12:45

My two nearest M&S branches in Wales have the loveliest staff imaginable, very kind and helpful. I am furious with M&S for their mixed sex changing room policy, but I really can’t fault the staff, because here they are delightful.

I while it’s nice to be polite it should be unconditional especially when it’s you keeping them in a job.

I remember going to M&S for a suit for an interview once(a rather large store too). I didn't see any out on the shop floor so I asked someone and she said we don't have them in store only online. Why?! I walked out and went to Next and bought one. Some staff are lovely some aren't but that's the same in most shops.
