To wish there was a way to get DM and DF to OZ?

Ex-pat been overseas 10 years, with work. Usually see DM and DF at least once every 12 months, they generally chase the sun and spend up to 8 weeks with us every year and I go home every 18months. Planned to be in the UK in July and they had planned to come this side either Christmas or Easter (for DM's milestone birthday) I see all these 'celebrities' all over social media travelling and think how can they get overseas and DM and DF are trapped in lockdown. I worry how much this is effecting their mental health. I am sure they would tolerate 2 week mandatory hotel quarantine to get a 10 week window of normal life. We are lucky to be in one of the less affected COVID states so dare I say it, life is normal here.
AIBU to wish this is possible or is wishing the borders to open irresponsible.

I think there should be compulsory Australian style quarantine everywhere. If controls the virus and supports the airline industry. Not suitable for a week holiday to the Med like people have been doing here but would work for some.

Australia have got it spot on compared to the shit show here. So if your parents are happy with the flight and the quarantine then I think they should be allowed to travel

ScrapThatThen · 29/12/2020 08:57

Doesn't the quarantine cost a fortune though

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/12/2020 08:58

Aren’t these rich people chartering private places?

The latter.

Calmandmeasured1 · 29/12/2020 09:01

Wishing won't help. Just plan for next Easter instead.

There are currently about 30000 Australians who are overseas and want to come back. Due to a limitation on the number who can be in hotel quarantine at any one time, it’s proving to be a very slow and frustrating process for them.
So there’s no way non citizens/ non residents from the uk would be allowed in any time soon. I’d doubt they would be allowed in unless they have been vaccinated.

It’s hard, I’m in the same situation but I think 2022 is realistic.

hop27 · 29/12/2020 09:06

Hotel quarantine isn't too bad - $4k per couple. Yes still a lot of money, but not is you think about it getting you a 10 week holiday !

Your situation is the very same as my neighbours, they usually do Oz and New Zealand for at least 8 weeks every other year and their DS and his family come over in the summer.

I also feel the same as regards to celebrities going to Dubai for Xmas, holidaying as normal.

It’s a shame that GB as an island like you, we didn’t lock down borders and stop travel, but it’s done now, we just have to hope the vaccine roll out helps us to get through the pandemic.

sofato5miles · 29/12/2020 09:09

Good luck getting a flight though, the quarantine system, while great, causes a funnel. Aussie mates have not found it easy to get flights to go back

I think it's totally understandable that you miss your parents, but it's one if the consequences of choosing to move far away from family (and i say this as someone who has lived overseas for the past 15 years). I'm lucky to have seen my parents once since last October, DH hasn't seen his parents since Christmas last year. And we're all in Europe. We just try to count ourselves lucky that we haven't had any family emergencies in the past year.

ScotsinOz · 29/12/2020 10:38

Only Australian Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents or New Zealand Citizens who normally live in Australia are currently allowed into Australia. As it is unlikely your parents are any of these, they are not allowed entry to Australia.

We have friends who have been stuck in Canada since they made a mercy dash for a dying parent in February. They have had multiple flights booked that keep getting cancelled because hotel quarantine is full. They are unlikely to be able to return until 2021. I appreciate you miss your parents, but Australia are prioritising Australian people stuck overseas, not holiday makers.

I understand many of us have not seen our families this year. We missed our two regular UK trips this year, as well as a US trip, and we’ve not even managed to get across the Queensland border to our holiday home. But as much as I am frustrated by my lack of holidays and not being able to see much missed family and friends, it is more important to keep everyone as safe as possible, which means no overseas travel for the foreseeable.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 29/12/2020 11:58

Yes you are unreasonable. Though how you feel is understandable.

Wrong. People going to do essential jobs (like emergency medicine) are still allowed in as are celebs. There are flights going, you just have to research the airlines carefully. YANBU

ScotsinOz · 29/12/2020 23:23

@oiwotaluvlyday
I’m not wrong. The celebrities arriving are “filming”, therefore working and allowed (as are people on essential business ). Anyone else not on that list above (unless married or defacto partner of an Australian Resident/Citizen) is not.
