To give Christmas pudding to the foodbank?

Looking for opinions here - use-by date on the pudding is March 2021. Would donating a specifically Christmas item after the day has passed be a bit insulting, or would it still be used by someone? I'm not sure if it would be a welcome donation or not.

YANBU - Yes, why wouldn't you?
YABU - No, no-one will want it

Why not call your foodbank and ask if they would use it?

RAOK · 28/12/2020 23:59

Food is food. I would donate it.

transformandriseup · 29/12/2020 00:05

I would donate it as it's in date and unused as it can be used as a pudding at anytime. My family used to have an Xmas pudding on New Years Day and at Easter.

partyatthepalace · 29/12/2020 00:06

Ask them? Or just give it to them, am sure someone will want it.

I can't find any contact details for them. I usually just hand stuff in at the collection point in the supermarket. I guess I could ask them for a number.

Just donate as normal no one will mind it’s a Christmas item

Bikingbear · 29/12/2020 00:11

I regularly buy Christmas pudding in the January sales and bring it out mid summer. It's not unusual for the posh full of booze ones to last well over 12 mths.

Maryann1975 · 29/12/2020 00:13

I volunteer at a food bank and we get donated all kinds of things, some of which I’ve never heard of. I love Christmas pudding and they are really filling and cooked really easily. I wouldn’t think twice about putting it in a food parcel in the new year. Our food bank was, like many others I imagine, collecting food from supermarkets after they closed on Christmas Eve. A lot of that would be Christmas food that hadn’t sold, so your pudding would be in good company.

Nickysturgeonfanclubprez · 29/12/2020 00:15

It’s obvious you have good intentions and food is food so definitely donate it Smile

SleepingStandingUp · 29/12/2020 00:17

Tbh if I was relying on a food bank for food, then being given a rich fruit pudding wouldn't be an issue. But I'd be wary of ogovng one with alcohol in

randomchap · 29/12/2020 00:17

Some foodbanks don't take donations that contain alcohol. There are signs up at the donation points at the supermarkets. If it contains booze you're probably best checking

StillCoughingandLaughing · 29/12/2020 00:57

What’s the worst that could happen if you donate it? It gets thrown away - which is surely what would happen to it anyway if you don’t want it.

Nobody is going to get drunk on a Christmas pudding even with a spot of alcohol in it.
StillCoughingandLaughing · 29/12/2020 01:18

It’s just a blanket policy for some food banks though.

AbbieLexie · 29/12/2020 01:22

I. would keep it and allow it to mature and have it Christmas 2021

NiceGerbil · 29/12/2020 02:13

It is legal currently to eat Xmas pud outside of Xmas.

Don't worry about it. Seriously.

UndertheCedartree · 29/12/2020 02:21

I think the alcohol might be an issue. The one I got given in a food parcel was alcohol and nut free.

Italiangreyhound · 29/12/2020 03:02

Ask them but our foodbank wants items with a 6 month use by date so March 2021 would be too short.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/12/2020 03:12

if your local foodbank won't handle food items that contain alcohol, there is always food sharing app olioex.com/

safariboot · 29/12/2020 03:30

It's not a great thing but better donated than binned.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 29/12/2020 03:38

Food is food. And when you're struggling so much that you can't afford to eat, it is wonderful to have something that isn't a "bare essential" ie a tin of bins or soup.

waydownwego · 29/12/2020 03:40

Trussell Trust foodbanks won't take food containing alcohol.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 29/12/2020 03:41

Food is food don’t waste it !

Sixgeese · 29/12/2020 08:25

Nothing containing alcohol is the blanket policy in the food bank I volunteer at.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/12/2020 08:29

I hate to think of good food being thrown away. Christmas puddings keep for a long, long time. I'd put money on yours still being absolutely fine for you to eat next Christmas. If your food bank has a no alcohol, no nuts policy, I'd hang onto yours (give it to a friend/relative if you don't want it) and give the food bank something else instead.
