Celebrating NYE with 8 & 10 year old

Obviously we ll be staying in this year, thinking of doing a little buffet, play some family games, may buy a couple of New Year decorations for the lounge, party poppers etc to celebrate with the children 7/8 pm ish, I know there isn’t much to celebrate but want to make the most of there being a bit of a special occasion if the next couple months are going to be a bit rubbish. Does that sound a good idea or a bit lame!?

We’ve never been out on NYE since having the DC now 15 and just turned 17. In the past we have played games, watched TV and either go out for an early meal say 5/6pm, have a buffet or get a takeaway. I think that sounds lovely. When ours were younger we did Auld Lang Syne about 9pm with the DC.

As we have clapped for the NHS, rang bells on Christmas eve, i wondered about suggesting to our neighbours that we all wrap up well and go out at midnight and sing auld lang syne or however you spell it at midnight from our front gardens.
I would say their will be another announcement on the 30th prohibiting getting together so most people will be at home where we live.

Following with interest!! We have been to butlins for the last ten years , since the DC were 1 and 3 and I m dreading this one as we normally have an amazing three days and it’s more important to us than Xmas day. I m not sure whether to do something like you OP or whether to ignore it entirely and treat it like a normal night.

UndertheCedartree · 28/12/2020 20:29

I always spend NYE with my DC. We usually order in pizza, play a game, have some sparklers and watch the fireworks on tv.

Namechangeme87 · 28/12/2020 20:31

No sounds fun ! Exactly what we are doing , slightly older here tho and will be letting them stay up until midnight . Games , film , pizza . People normally let off fireworks and imagine they still will this year so will likely stand in the garden to watch them and then bed

PoodleMoth · 28/12/2020 20:47

My 8 year old has stayed up until midnight for a couple of years with us now (only night she is allowed up later unless we are on holiday), we have pizza, crisps, dips etc play board games and card games and listen to music. She is really excited to do it again this year (personally I would happily go to bed at 10!)

Nowaynothappening · 28/12/2020 20:51

We usually do something during the day so bowling, cinema, aquarium, zoo etc. This year we’re going for a walk at a local stately home. Then we always go for a meal but we’ll get a takeaway this year instead. Let the DC stay up late and watch some films.

Mydogdoesntlisten · 28/12/2020 23:05

Agree, just let them stay up late and they will love it and be incredibly excited. Whatever else you decide to do is a bonus.

AnnaSW1 · 28/12/2020 23:15

We are doing the same with toddlers. Will have party food, disco and pass the parcel. Alcohol for usGrinWine

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 28/12/2020 23:18

That's literally what I've done every single year since having kids. Standard isn't it when your a parent.

Superstardjs · 28/12/2020 23:37

Always home for NYE tho sometimes had friends round for early evening drinks in less covidy times. Party food, stay up as late as dd wants. Now, she is a teenager and Jools is part of our NY celebration.

Yellow85 · 28/12/2020 23:41

We’re doing party decorations, buffet, games and music! I’m planning on making makeshift beds in the front room and letting the kids fall asleep when they want to. It’s actually my idea of perfection, all cosied up together in one room celebrating the end of a horrendous year.

TitsOot4Xmas · 28/12/2020 23:42

DD has seen in every new year since she was 10 weeks old. She’s now 10.

We have a nice meal, watch a movie, popcorn and hot chocolate, play board games, then London and Reykjavik fireworks with a glass of fizz for the bongs (DD has about 1/4 of a glass). Bed at about 12:45/1am and lie in on NYD. Lush.

ChristmasCovid · 28/12/2020 23:43

That’s exactly what we do and always have tbh.. we find a new year countdown on YouTube and play it about 9pm so he thinks he’s stayed up till new year then off to bed.

littlepattilou · 28/12/2020 23:45

@lala2221 That sounds awesome!

Hope you all have a good night.

8 & 10 year olds are old enough to have fun with. Not sure what we're doing. May do a buffet myself now for my family, get some party poppers, and play some games. Grin

TheGremlinsAreComing · 28/12/2020 23:47

That's what I've always done, never our on NYE always at home having a celebration with DC. Buffet food, telly, games, party poppers at midnight.

GymSloth · 28/12/2020 23:47

We're going to do the same. This will be the first year I let them stay up until midnight. We're going to do some party food, play board games etc. A pp mentioned pass the parcel. Mine would love that! At Halloween we did games like apple bobbing as we obviously couldn't trick or treat this year. I'd love to plan some good New Year's eve games. Does anyone have any suggestions?

PoodleMoth · 29/12/2020 17:32

Uno, trivial pursuit, strictly board game and pictionary are my daughters favourites!
