a.expect to be able to buy a reasonably priced swimming costume for dd(11) in an ordinary high street without being told repeatedly "Oh no, we sold them all in the sale - we won't have any more in til Spring.....
b. to be able to buy a bra for the same dd that's plain white so it won't show under her school shirt and is not PADDED!!!What's that about ffs?!
and finally c. to be able to pop into WH Smiths 3 minutes before closing time to buy a "Match" magazine for ds who had patiently trailed round after me in this abortive shopping trip, without discovering that the shop was already closed and barricaded!

yanbu
I now stock up in the summer. And so agree about the bras

petetong · 24/10/2007 21:06

Tescos do packs of plain white non padded bras. Sorry can't help with the rest, but I would be annoyed with Smiths.

dee24 · 24/10/2007 21:08

a. yanbu. b. yanbu
c. depends on when the staff get paid until, I work in a shop and we get paid until 6pm, so don't want to work past 6pm. Therefore door closes at 5.55pm to allow shoppers still in to go to tills and leave, and to avoid customers coming in and browsing for ages (it does happen). In fairness though the signs on the door do tend to say until 6pm, so I totally see why you would be pee'd off.

chocolatespiders · 24/10/2007 21:11

spoprts shop for swimsuit prob

Trouble with sports shops is that they tend to be mega expensive, and dd's swimsuits don't last long because she and I are both too lazy/disorganized to rinse the chlorine out properly!

Thanks for the link -I'll go there. She was hoping to have a non-baggy one for a swimming party this afternoon, but she'll just have to cope with a saggy bottom!

lailasmum · 25/10/2007 06:39

The speedo ones have something in them to stop the chlorine ruining them so may be worth the money if they last longer, the ones we buy are about £12 from a sports shop.

Would phone wh smith and speak to manager, i went for a coffee with ds a couple of weeks ago, it was halpf an hour before closing and the staff put up all the chairs and swept all the floor around us giving us dirty looks the whole time

dee24 · 25/10/2007 08:44

tbh the manager ain't going to do much as it was only 3 minutes, would you work past 6 o'clock if you only got paid until then? Bear in mind shop workers are generally on Min wage, and after doors close have to quickly clean, put tils away then close up shop.
Sorry but it's something that actually really annoys me grrr! People just popping in at a few minutes to and taking their time.....I want to run up to them and shout 'just get what you bloody need and get out!!!!' hehe!
Of course I understand you were going to just grab a magazine but unfortunatly not all customers are like this which does spoil it for everyone else.

dee24 · 25/10/2007 08:46

Of course the dirty looks at coffee shop is out of order, but I wouldn't say cleaning up etc is again due to the reasons below. I never give dirty looks to customers, I'm not a mean enough person

seeker · 25/10/2007 08:56

I do understand about shop workers - and I really wouldn't have minded if they were clearing up around me, or if they chucked me out whether or not I had finished my shopping dead on 5.30 - but it does say 5.30 on the door, and I do think I should be able to buy something right up to 5.30. I even had the right money because I knew I wouldn't have much time!

I work in a shop and 9 times out of ten if someone is coming in a few mins before closing they are going to buy something. I never shut the door before 5 and as you say there is plenty to be getting on with whilst folks are browsing. I dont mind people tidying up after hours if I am there but not before the stated closing time. So actually I do work past six if I am needed to and if it was a regular thing I would take it up with my employer to have the hours adjusted.

bookofthedeadmum · 25/10/2007 19:13

I bulk-buy swimming costumes for my dd when I spot them on sale - I've got one in the next size stashed in the bottom of my wardrobe for when her current ones are worn out or a Christmas present - whatever comes first. Shops are rubbish at stocking swimsuits 'out of season' - like none of us ever want to go swimming in winter .

Re the working up til 6pm or whatever, I bet the staff want to cash up so the tills have probably been emptied already. It is frustrating when you have the money ready and know what you want. Then the shops wonder why everyone flocks to the ever-open supermarkets..... .

dee24 · 25/10/2007 22:56

Unfortunatly I don't work for such a reputable employer so I know what they would say to that! They have already cut my managers hours (to share out between staff) and things are hard enough as it is. We do our cleaning etc in the last hour but as it is a freezer (food) store you do get smart @rses trying to come in with trollys at 5 minutes to closing time. And there is no way I am working past the hours I am paid for, no way!

seeker · 26/10/2007 06:25

This is more complicated than I thought it was! So how long before the time shown on the door is it OK to shut a shop? I presume it takes more than 5 minutes to clean up, tidy and cash up?

I remember when I worked in a shop, we cashed up just before closing time, and any last minute money was put aside to be added to the next day's takings.Doesn't than happen any more?

OP posts:
dee24 · 26/10/2007 08:27

We lock the door and put shutter down at 5 to, we clean for the last half hour so the last five minutes is spent serving remaining customers, removing tills and putting them in the safe (put to the side for next day), finishing up the cleaning, then getting our things and leaving. It's generally about 5 past when we get out of the door but I do agree that the sign should say five to for closure, but our company just expect you to stay behind however long it takes which is completely unfair. It is our managers decision to close 5 minutes early as she does't think it is fair for her staff to work over there time when not paid, if I finish early she actually chases me out the door!

cluelessnchaos · 26/10/2007 09:56

Doesnt sound very fair dee24, I work for a small business, so my employer is approachable and I do want to make sure that there are as many sales as poss. And I think we agree, closure should be stated on the door, I dont mind working a bit late sometimes, cos if I am running late or need to leave early for an appointment thats ok, lots of give and take.
