Hello. I just noticed this on the corner of my little girl's lips. Does anyone know what it is?

Cold sore? Just a scab if she bites her lips?

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/12/2020 14:02

cold sore I would have thought

Baublebox · 28/12/2020 14:02

It looks split. Mine do that when my iron levels are low.

PeskyRooks · 28/12/2020 14:03

It could be impetigo. I used to get it when I was a kid it can spread quite quickly. I think you have to get cream from the GP for it and your dd will have to have her own flannel and towel it's catching!

44PumpLane · 28/12/2020 14:06

Like Baublebox I get this when my iron or vitamin B levels deplete.

What I have is called angular cheilitis and I tend to get it on both corners of my lips at the same time and occasionally in the middle of the top lip on the inside. At the very first sign of this I start to take metatone and sometimes iron supplements.

Bijli · 28/12/2020 14:06

She doesn't bite her lip. She used to suck her thumb but it's been a month since she's come off it and it's the first time something like this has appeared. Could very well be a cold sore!! Thanks xx

I get these occasionally, never had a cold sore in my life. It's just a chap. The skins split from being damp on cold weather. Vaseline or chapstick to keep the air off it and it'll clear up on its own.

Bijli · 28/12/2020 14:07

I will get in touch with doc to be safe!! Thank you xx

I'm going to second angular chilitis.

Bijli · 28/12/2020 14:08

She drinks water a lot, could be that!! Thank you x

The corners of my mouth crack and get sore in either cold or dry weather, could be that but would expect it to be both sides of the mouth

wintertime6 · 28/12/2020 14:10

If it's going yellow and crusty it could've impetigo. My dd sucks her thumb and she gets it every now and then. An antibiotic cream from the GP usually clears it up quickly.

Angular chelitis.

I get it occasionally when run down or iron levels drop. It’s pretty common.

Winterwoollies · 28/12/2020 14:27

Cheilitis*

DrizzleandDamp · 28/12/2020 14:29

Herpes or a cold sore to use the vernacular. If you’re worried then pharmacist.

OldBean2 · 28/12/2020 14:30

That's a classic angular cheilitis, get rid of the lipstick and get some Vaseline. It is usually caused by being rundown or stressed. Clears up pretty quickly its own accord.

Ohtherewearethen · 28/12/2020 14:31

I get this a lot. I remember panicking because I had it just before my wedding. A colleague said that she had an old tip that always worked for her - rub it clean with fairy liquid then cover liberally and frequently with vaseline. It cleared it up in 36 hours.

sunnysidegold · 28/12/2020 14:31

I took a photo of my kid's mouth which was like your daughter's. Pharmacist said likely angular cheilitis too. Got a tube of canestan and it cleared it up within a few days.

TinySanta · 28/12/2020 14:33

It’s Angular Chelitis You don’t need to see a doctor, a pharmacist will be able to recommend a topical cream.

superstar84 · 28/12/2020 14:33

I'd take her into boots to see the pharmacist rather than gp

Bijli · 28/12/2020 16:40

Thank you everyone for your helpful messages. I'll be heading to pharmacy tomorrow!! X

Does she have braces? I had this as a teen and the GP diagnosed impetigo, it never really went. Then the dentist noticed and suggested it was bacteria from the brace and to really up dental hygiene for a bit including anti bac mouthwash- that sorted it

Mrsmorton · 28/12/2020 16:45

Vitamin B deficiency doesn't help angular cheilitis. It's a weird little infection but heals quickly. I usually drink a load of hot marmite to heal it!

Agree with getting rid of chap stick. The fairy liquid cure is interesting, AC is common in denture wearers and advice to them is to give their false teeth a good scrub with soap.
