Sacked after ONE day! :(

PrankedByLife · 28/12/2020 12:24

This happened a couple of weeks ago but I still can't get over it.

After TEN years of temporary and contract work I finally got a permanent job!
£40k, permanent, 3 month probation period, in my field of expertise, directly employed with the company, no crappy agencies involved - I thought finally, after 10 years of rubbish God had finally rewarded me.

They sacked me after ONE day!!!

First he said I was over qualified and then I was too slow.

The irony of this situation is, I've never worked so hard in my first day in any job. I was hands on, got a lot done.

I emailed the owner of the business who actually hired me to let him know that the MD had sacked me and nearly two weeks on he hasn't bothered to reply.

I can't believe they only gave me one day to prove myself!!

I have to admit the atmosphere was strange the minute I got there - no one was prepared to even say hello!

Has this happened to anyone else and did you ever find out why?

I feel like I'm meant to take the scraps of jobs forever, I'm not good enough for a proper job.

I was in a temp job and got let go 3 months early because I didn't apologise enough and didn't tell them when I went for a covid test. I actually laughed when they told me, I was so shocked. The day before they had been singing my praises! As it happened I had y told them about going for a covid test (written proof) and the thing they wanted me to apologise for I had not actually been involved with.

The lady after me was let go for being too nice, after just one week.

I have no idea what that particular company thought they were doing I don't think they knew what they wanted and strongly suspect that they were running out of money,!

SynchroSwimmer · 28/12/2020 17:42

Op, if the MD who sacked you is also leaving, isn’t there a good chance that the actual business owner who recruited you might be in contact soon....when business re-starts after NY or when the MD leaves?

I found myself in 3 situations like this, going in to work places where there is already a hostile environment because of internal politics - someone else is leaving, the rest of the team don’t like it - and can be openly hostile to anyone new.

Feel for you.

winterbabythistime · 28/12/2020 17:44

That's rubbish op, I'm sorry that happened to you. I can only think there was some sort of internal politics you got caught up in.

He was the one that sacked me though and was saying I was over qualified and then too slow and wouldn't let me respond.

My ex was made redundant- his whole department was, on a Monday afternoon in early September. This included someone n his first day who had relocated his entire family for the job, and a student on a year in industry.

randomer · 28/12/2020 17:54

The fact no one would even say hello indicates they knew you were for the chop before you arrived. Your job offer had basically been rescinded and they didn't have the guts to tell you

how do people live with themselves?

MellowYellow101 · 28/12/2020 18:25

Leave a crappy review on Glassdoor!

  1. Role has access to accounts
  2. Newcomer understands system/accounts very well
  3. `slow' comments could correlate to observed thoroughness
  4. Current MD leaving

Its not impossible that there is some misbehaviour in the finances that they didn't expect a newcomer to find for a while - hence panicked removal - why did previous accounts bod leave?

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 09:31

I was in a toxic work environment once and people took weeks before they warmed up.

About 4 months after I arrived our CEO got a new PA. The other PA made a telling comment; 'I am sure she is very nice but I'm not going to waste my time being friendly. She's just going to quit in a few weeks'.

Irisheyesrsmiling · 29/12/2020 09:47

@PrankedByLife that sounds terrible and I am certain it wasn't anything to do with you and more to do with things happening behind the scenes. It also sounds like you have a lot to offer. Hoping 2021 brings you just the job and role you need & deserve!

Have you worked in a variety of types of organisations? I was just thinking that if you have only worked in large and possibly bureaucratic organisations, you could be judged to be slow as, imo, many don't know what hard work is. Smaller organisations, where you do a more all-round role seem to be where you really slog. Obviously you can't be expected to hit the ground running on day 1 without some training it handover. I don't mean to offend but could it be that you are are slower than you think?

NewMumOrpington · 29/12/2020 14:27

Hi OP,

What a terrible thing to happen!

If the "why" is going to occupy your thoughts then you could put a subject access request into the employer. They would then be legally obliged to provide you with all the data they hold on you. This may include email correspondence or notes on your HR record that shed some light on the situation. Take a look on the Information Commissioner's Office website and there's a template for how to word the request.

Having said that, it might be best to just draw a line under it. Only you know how you'd best move forward. Just mentioning the request thing in case it's useful.

All the best finding another role.

coldwaterfeed · 29/12/2020 14:40

That’s crazy! What industry is this? I didn’t think anyone actually DOES any work in their first day?

SuperPixie247 · 29/12/2020 14:54

This is really odd OP! I was interviewed at the beginning of the year for a similar job in a similar interview. Apparently they had interviewed LOTS of people and couldn't work out why no-one wanted to come back for a second interview. They were the most unfriendly, cold, rude people I have ever met, they sounded annoyed to be meeting me. It was excrutiating but then they asked me back for a second to meet the MD Shock

Are you West Yorkshire based by any chance?

SuperPixie247 · 29/12/2020 14:56

Similar job in a similar sector I mean!

Many many years ago I went into work after a two week break to find everyone in the coffee room acting oddly. Got to the shop floor to find I had been moved to a new department without anyone telling me. My crime? Reporting my manager for using racist language towards black members of staff. Instead of doing anything to him, I was punished.

PrankedByLife · 29/12/2020 17:03

Previous Accountant was sacked after decades in the job. The woman present in the junior role is leaving because she doesn't like the changes. The two roles together was the role I was employed for.

I'm not slower than I think as it's not a production line type of job. I've worked in all sorts of organisation structures.

It's an Accountant role - speed doesn't factor in it especially not the first day, month end is when you have tight deadlines.

Having said that I put on over 100 invoices that there was a backlog of, not that I was there to be the purchase ledger clerk.

MatildaonaWaltzer · 29/12/2020 17:19

so they let you loose on confidential financial and HR systems for one day and then fired you? Did you sign an NDA out of interest?
Xenia's advice is excellent - there are good templates for Subject Access Request letters online; you should send one by recorded delivery / email.

MinervaSaidThar · 01/01/2021 17:26

As you turned down another job for this one, I would try and take this further.
