Working from home

user749201848028 · 27/12/2020 22:40

Back to work in feb after being on maternity leave.

Have ordered a ladder desk as will now be working from home for the foreseeable

Looking at chairs and I can't seem to find anything within my budget of around £50 that looks suitable.

Would I be unreasonable to use my pregnancy ball?

Used it in the office when I was pregnant and wondering it it'd be a suitable alternative?

Fell free to tell me I'm being ridiculous and to get a chair ordered ASAP 😁

Is this a personal budget? My employer would have bought you a chair / sent you your normal office chair...

NothingIsWrong · 27/12/2020 22:43

Surely your employer will be providing a chair?

Username7521 · 27/12/2020 22:51

I use a ball at both the office and home...

Womencanlift · 27/12/2020 23:00

I looked at a couple of decent chairs in IKEA. Luckily for me I got an ex display one in the bargain corner for £20. Nothing wrong with it at all and best of all it was already built.

I wouldn’t have thought your ball will be good for 8 hours a day. Surely that won’t protect your back long term?

Mummyrowland · 28/12/2020 00:49

I would ask and see if they will either lend you one from the office or buy you one.

Re no support for back. Standing desks are becoming more common now so no back support isn't an issue as long as you do a dse for your station

Sparklesocks · 28/12/2020 01:08

Are your work giving staff the money to source their own chairs? Could you ask your manager/team members where they got theirs or for general recommendations?

My office arranged for existing chairs to be delivered to staff at home, maybe that’s an option too.

CorianderQueen · 28/12/2020 02:18

That would knacker my back and do my head in

YukoandHiro · 28/12/2020 02:44

The IKEA desk chair is good ana I think it comes in around £50

RainbowMum11 · 28/12/2020 03:29

I have my desk/home office chair from IKEA, it's great for me (I have done DSE training and tried it before I bought it.

Blondie1984 · 28/12/2020 03:33

Your employer actually has a responsibility to ensure that you have a properly equipped workstation- that includes desks, chairs, monitors etc so I would talk to them before you buy anything else

NiceGerbil · 28/12/2020 03:47

We got a budget to spend and lots of people realised they didn't get the right thing.

Try it for a couple weeks before buying stuff.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 28/12/2020 07:25

Get onto your line manager or HR and they should order you one. Alternatively, keep scouring FB market place etc and you’ll see on find one.

BritWifeinUSA · 28/12/2020 07:33

A ladder desk isn’t good for long periods either. I couldn’t work without my Varidesk converter. You will need some back support for sitting.

Merryoldgoat · 28/12/2020 07:38

I agree about work providing you with a chair - we did this for people at the start of the pandemic.

Regarding the ball: where I used to work occupational health recommended them for people and provided them.

The people I know who sat on them said they really helped core strength and didn’t have back issues.

You could try it for a week or so and see how you get on but it’s not a crazy thought.

Jangle33 · 28/12/2020 08:24

Check with your work. We are in a pandemic and as such as this is temporary they may not be providing chairs! I love how other posters say their work is, everyone else’s will be... If you have back pain etc though do let your manager know.

NothingIsWrong · 28/12/2020 21:30

@Jangle33 "for the foreseeable" implies that this is a semi permanent situation. While employers (including mine) got away with the "BUT PANDEMIC" excuse for ignoring H&S in the early part of the first lockdown, by now they should have themselves sorted to provide appropriate equipment for their staff.
