Rejected from job interview but it's been readvertised 2 months later

Hello,
I won't be applying for this job as I didn't feel a click at the interview.
Just wondering, I received an interview for this job during October.
I went to it and then received an email 6 hours later saying I was unsuccessful.

Just been scrolling through job sites and the exact same job is being advertised 2 montbs later(same hours, same pay, same description).

Why could this be?

Could be one of many things, maybe someone took the job but didn’t get on well so left? Maybe there’s more than one job? Maybe they didn’t find anyone suitable?

I think your over thinking it as you say you didn’t want the job anyway?

Wheresmykimchi · 27/12/2020 21:01

Either they didn't get someone or the appointed left.

Wheresmykimchi · 27/12/2020 21:02

@Retiremental

They realised that they messed up by not hiring you and are too embarrassed to ask you to apply again so are hoping you’ve seen the ad and will apply yourself?
Unnecessarily snipey.
MaintainTheMolehill · 27/12/2020 21:06

I've had this happen once before but on the advert it stated that previous applicants need not apply. I've also asked for feedback after not being offered a job and been offered a different position which was weird...

It sounds to me that the person they chose now isn't taking the job/hasn't worked out/has left quickly.

rottiemum88 · 27/12/2020 21:15
  1. Multiple positions
  2. Didn't find a suitable candidate
  3. Found a suitable candidate who failed to start as promised
  4. Found a suitable candidate who started then left

Why do you care???

VodselForDinner · 27/12/2020 21:16

Maybe they loved you and have set this up as a test of your lateral thinking skills?

Almostslimjim · 27/12/2020 21:19

Just because you were unsuccessful doesn't mean someone else was. It's not a case of taking the best candidate, sometimes they are all unsuitable so they readvertise.

Almostslimjim · 27/12/2020 21:22

In my work, a candidate has to be apointable- scoring at least 2 out of 4 on every interview question. If none do that, no one is offered the job. If more than one person does, the one with the highest overall score is offered it first.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 27/12/2020 21:23

@Shoxfordian

There’s another vacancy The person who was successful left Nobody was appointed so they need to readvertise
This. It's not rocket science.
andyindurham · 27/12/2020 21:29

As recently as last week I had to turn down an offer that I had initially accepted (family circumstances outwith my control). I don't know if there was a second choice on their list from the candidates they interviewed this time, nor if that second (third? fourth?) choice would still be interested. So it's entirely plausible that the position will be advertised again in the New Year. Unfortunate for all concerned, but it can happen.

Drummmmmmssssass · 27/12/2020 21:31

Wow some people on mumsnet are really rude. I was just genuinely curious as to why it might be the case. As I mentioned, I have no intention of applying for it.

Thanks to those who actually replied to the question Smile

DrDreReturns · 27/12/2020 21:32

It's better not to hire anyone than an unsuitable candidate.

SynchroSwimmer · 27/12/2020 21:34

You could find out if they use an agency for temporary assignments, register with the agency and try and get a temp placement - if the company itself appeals to you....then get an inside view?

Becca19962014 · 27/12/2020 21:47

The one time it happened to me was because the job was I plots divide and the people horrendously rude.

They had zero clue about the job (it was to do with programming that needed updating due to coding issues around the year 2000 - yes there were really some programs that required changes made). The bloke that wrote it was in the interview and couldn't answer a single question about the program and had refused "as a point of pride" to not comment his program - the additional paperwork to help me was an A4 sheet telling me about the project which I'd already found on their website; which was equally horrendous and written by, yes, the interviewer.

I'd no idea he'd done any of it (though I wondered) until the other interviewer with great joy announced the other bloke had written it, who informed me, I'd only got the interview because he wanted to see "what kind of bird would apply as all the others were decent chaps".

That job was never done. None of the "decent chaps" lasted more than a couple of months. The job was impossible without appropriate paperwork (it was machine code - binary with some hexi). I got offered it several times; without even applying.

Needless to say they were forced to get someone in to completely rewrite the program.

Becca19962014 · 27/12/2020 21:48

"I plots divide" is suppose to be 'impossible"
I've no idea what my autocorrect is on!!

Meepmeeep · 27/12/2020 21:50

The person who was recruited has jacked in the job or it’s a job done by more than 1 person and another has resigned opening up a new vacancy? Just 2 plausible reasons.

tillyandmilly · 27/12/2020 21:55

I had just been interviewed for a role that I would have been perfect for - I was made redundant earlier in the year and this job was exactly what I was looking for - I had done the exact same role in my previous firm - I was really hopeful and confident during the interview - sadly the company said they had an internal recommendation - to say I was gutted is an understatement! This will be my 7th interview! Getting paranoid and worried now I won't find anything!

tttigress · 27/12/2020 22:02

A similar thing happened in to me, interviewed for a position, was not accepted, yet the job was not filled many many months later.

I get the point that an employer is not obligated to hire anyone, but in my field there is supposedly a great skills shortage, so it would actually be better to try to work with the best candidate, so they can actually have an employee, and fill any gaps if needed.

The worst part is feedback from interviews is often extremely poor. Ok, you don't get hired, but you should actually be given a reason why you weren't hired.

heseesyouwhenyouaresleeping · 27/12/2020 22:03

They didn't get round to employ anyone

or the person that got the job miserably failed their probation period

or got a better offer elsewhere

Ontheboardwalk · 27/12/2020 22:07

The person they offered the job to told their existing employer and they promoted/gave them pay rise to stay?

Is sad that sometimes the only way to move up in the company you work for is if you threaten to leave

DrDreReturns · 27/12/2020 22:11

so it would actually be better to try to work with the best candidate

Not if the best candidate is still a bad fit. It's all relevant.
(I'm not saying you were a bad candidate Smile)

DrDreReturns · 27/12/2020 22:15

Relevant = relative

Sparklesocks · 27/12/2020 22:16

It happens. We had a tricky vacancy at work recently, had a lot of applicants but none shortlisted were quite right. So we advertised a second time about 6 weeks later and managed to find the perfect candidate. Sometimes people miss the vacancy or aren’t looking at that specific moment.

cabbageking · 27/12/2020 22:19

If you don't find anyone suitable then you re advertise.

If the standard was poor you ask they don't reapply.
If there was potential you would tend to allow reapplication

tttigress · 27/12/2020 22:20

@DrDreReturns

so it would actually be better to try to work with the best candidate

Not if the best candidate is still a bad fit. It's all relevant.

The company I am thinking of regularly leaves positions they are advertising on their website unfilled for about 6 months, as I said there is a skills crisis in my industry, so it really would be better if they actually hired someone assuming they matched a certain criteria. If a company is leaving positions open for that long you could question if they are wasting the candidate's time.
