To ask how you store your homemade bread?

I bought a breadmaker a couple of months ago and I love it. But I can find a way to store my bread for longer than a day without it going stale and/or the crust going soft!

How do you store your bread?

Wrapped in a tea towel in the bread bin.

That’s what I do but it doesn’t seem to work!

Wrapped in a tea towel on the kitchen worktop. I find if I wrap it tightly it lasts a couple of days. You can buy cotton bags/paper bags.

Typing bread bag into Amazon or Lakeland gets you the type of thing you can use. I have some, don’t know where they came from, but they do the trick for a few days. And of course, the aforementioned tea towel isn’t all that different.

In a beeswax wrap in the breadbin.

You do get special bags on amazon that keeps the bread fresh. I just use a linen drawstring bag. Tea towels means more crumbs everywhere. Our bread doesn't have to stay fresh for long because it doesn't last long.

Wholemeal loafs keep longer. However white bread will go stale in about 2 days because that's what bread with no preservatives naturally does. Can you cut the loaf in half and put half in the freezer?
I just use plastic bags from shop bread or large freezer bags to store.

The reason shoo bought bread lasts so long and takes an eon (compared to my childhood!) to get mouldy is all the preservatives in it. Without the preservatives, bread will only ever last a day or two. What about baking a smaller loaf more frequently if you’re not eating your loaf in a day or two.

Also I think crust going soft is natural too, that has always happened to my loaves.

This is why the French buy their bread twice a day

Lakeland bread bag.

Wrapped in foil in the bread bin

SophieB100 · 27/12/2020 08:13

I just use a plastic freezer bag.
I bake small loaves with half wholemeal and half white flour.
Fresh for a couple of days.
Good for toast on the third day.
I love my bread maker.

AlsDiner · 27/12/2020 08:15

I slice it and freeze it, with baking paper in between the slices to stop them sticking to each other when frozen.

I either toast it straight from frozen, or it will defrost at room temperature in 30 mins, or 10 seconds in the microwave also defrosts it.

You store it for longer than a day ? I'm impressed ! Round these parts the hungry teens get the scent of the bread and it's slathered in butter and eaten before the bread pan has even reached the sink Hmm I wrap it in beeswax wraps if I get the chance.
