To hate being home alone in this weather

We've got 50mph gusts of wind outside. It's just me at home and my anxiety is always awful when it's windy, I feel sick and like crying. I know I'm a wuss but it's winding me up. I need to calm down I know.

Can you watch a movie with the sound turned up or turn on some background noise?

I've got some music on my phone.

Unless you live in a straw house I wouldn't worry.

Seriously though, 50mph isn't enough to do damage to a standard house, take a few deep breaths and sip on water, that always helps me.

LeSangeEstDansLarbre · 26/12/2020 22:26

I’m exactly the same, so please have a handhold. Windy weather does something to me that nothing else does; I’m not normally an anxious person but this does it every time.

I find it best to block out the noise as far as possible - I’ll be leaving my iPad to play white noise all night, as loudly as I need it to cover what’s going on outside. I might sleep downstairs as I can’t hear the heaviness of the rain or the wind round the roof. And I have been looking carefully at the forecast so I know when it’s due to abate - then I can count down to it if I wake in the night. I find it helps to know that there’s only three hours, two hours, an hour to go and it will be over.

goingtokickthisweight · 26/12/2020 22:26

Hi op. My dm is the same as you.
The weather doesn't bother me but I do have anxiety in other ways.
Playing games on my phone with the release on or music on in the background helps

WonderingFree · 26/12/2020 22:27

Hi there, sending good wishes. I’m at 70mph here and used to it as on the coast. Can I ask you to think thru what makes you worried about the wind?

1willgetthere · 26/12/2020 22:34

Sorry you are feeling so anxious. What is it that worries you?

roastedpudding · 26/12/2020 22:39

The roof mainly, we are very exposed and the tv aerial went last time it was like this (it's still not back up) but I think the roof is ok. It's just something about the noise and feeling vulnerable which is daft.

Can you think about it in a different way. Snuggle up under the duvet, soft lighting and listen to the wind, try and enjoy being warm inside your lovely comfortable bed whilst it's all cold, rainy and windy outside. A bit like having an open real fire going whilst it's snowy inside.

As others have said it's highly unlikely the wind will do any real damage. I know this might not help but maybe try and turn it round a bit.

MsJaneAusten · 26/12/2020 22:52

It’s just me and my kids at home and I’m actually loving it.

You sound nervous about the roof in particular though, so a few practical suggestions:

  • round up a bit of a ‘grab bag’ in case there is a problem (unlikely, but might make you feel better) - torch, waterproof coat, snacks, drink, car keys.
  • Place candles (unlit) and matches in convenient places
  • keep torch (phone?) with you at all times
  • play the radio - somehow the talking helps keep me calm

If you can manage it, try looking out of the window at the storm too. It’s somehow less scary when you can see the reality.

WonderingFree · 26/12/2020 23:17

Have you tried Googling your local town centre bodies to see what the weather is doing locally? Listening to local radio also helps. Unless you’ve been given a weather warning you will be fine. Keep posting too x

We're under an amber warning and it's getting stronger.

Sending hand hold from here - new house so still getting used to the noises anyway and now with this wind whipping around...! Toddler is asleep but husband on a night shift so I'm going to spend the night not really sleeping as mind will be on high alert! Sounds weird but I make sure I'm dressed (so ready to go), have a tv programme on my phone that I don't have to concentrate on but love, and keep the lights on that I need whilst finding the most snuggly place I can in my mattress Smile

AdoraBell · 27/12/2020 00:02

I suggest looking up things on YouTube, comedy or cute dogs/cats or anything you find amusing.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 27/12/2020 00:06

Hand hold and CakeBrew or maybe Wine?

Takemetothebar · 27/12/2020 00:10

Small child is asleep, husband is at work and we live in a notoriously windy part of the world. I have become more used to it now, but I still worry sometimes after the year our barns blew away. Honestly though, nowadays, I put the audiobook on and go to sleep. The house will be fine and there is nothing I can do about anything else.

OrangeVelour · 27/12/2020 00:18

We're in an amber warning area too (North Devon coast). It seems to have calmed down slightly and I've been checking the wind speeds on the Met office and it does like we're over the worst bit. I'm mainly worried about the bins blowing around and having to chase them up the street in my nightie, coat and wellies like I did last time we had a storm like this.

Pinkfreesias · 27/12/2020 00:44

It's been horrendously windy here in Scotland tonight. I find gales really unsettling, too, so I think I have an idea of how you feel, OP.

I've no worries about the structure of the house; its a rock solid, 200 year old farmhouse. But I worry about my husband, out driving to work and others who might be affected. I probably won't sleep well; gales always seen to wake me up.

I'll be glad when it calms down.

theThreeofWeevils · 27/12/2020 01:13

Anyone is entitled to be jittery in high winds. I'm in SE London and having Doubts about my fence. At least the cat is in. On one level I know it is vanishingly unlikely that he would be decapitated by a stray roof tile. On the other level, well... I am happier now he's in.

cyclingmad · 27/12/2020 01:18

Stick noise cancelling headphones in and listen to audio book or music.

Wear earplugs when sleeping

WonderingFree · 27/12/2020 01:40

How you going OP? The winds are going where I’m at at 10mph gust less than expected- how r u going?
