AIBU to think veggie Christmas dinner just isn't as good

This was my first Christmas as a vegetarian. We got this nut roast thing from Sainsbury's and it was like tasteless mush stuffing with almonds on it. Did the usual roast spuds and veg but the whole thing was just not as tasty. To be fair we had this rubbish apple stuffing instead of the classic sage and onion. But aibu to think Xmas dinner will just never taste as good as it does with meat?

I'm actually really liking being vegetarian and feeling all healthy etc, but this was a real let down.

@ColourMeExhausted I got veggie pigs from Sainsbury’s and they were pretty good! They were wrapped in fake bacon rather than pastry like the M&S ones. I think I heard that Morrison’s also did some this year but I haven’t tried them.

This looks delicious, thinking of trying it for NYE

@Imissmoominmama I think we had the same veggie xmas dinner! From the Guardian food bit? Mmm- was good as leftovers too!

I love our vegetarian dinners, Christmas included, but your mistake was going for a commercial product instead of making your own

I've never had a shop bought nut roast that wasn't a bit disappointing. Making your own can be a bit of a faff but is well worth it. This is the recipe I use most years:

@EggBobbin- I made it up (there’s a local blue cheese which makes a belting sauce). I’ll have a look though- the flavours go so well together that I wouldn’t be at all surprised if someone else had made it up too!

If you make the filo pastry main from Rose Elliott's vegetarian Christmas you will never have a rubbish Christmas dinner again. Losing this due to having to go gluten free is a big source of food based sadness for me. If anyone knows of any ready made gluten free filo pastry (one of the few things I can't make is pastry) Dr C will like you a lot.

Our xmas dinner was all vegan and it was delicious. One of the nicest I have ever had. We had nut and mushroom roast with cranberries, posh sage and onion stuffing with lemon, vegan pigs in blankets, roasted potatoes, carrots and parsnip, mashed potatoes, sprouting broccoli, kale and two sorts of gravy. We had sticky toffee pudding later with cream and ice cream. It was so so good. I haven't eaten meat for 30 years (vegan for 2) and was never that bothered. I guess if you love it you might miss it more.

Vegan/Vegetarian household here (I'm vegan, everyone else is veggie). I felt like going retro so made nut roast for the first time ever, it was delicious! I made a porcini mushroom gravy to go with it, roast potatoes, roasted fennel and peas, thyme-roasted sprouts and shallots. And at my children's request, I also made a lasagne, because it was our first Christmas at home for years and I'd said everyone can have what they want.

I veganised Delia's truffle torte for pudding and it was good but maybe needed to adjust the cream/chocolate ratio.

I am not surprised that a supermarket ready-meal was underwhelming! But I'm sorry you had a disappointing first veggie Christmas. Hope the next one is better.
