Help! How long do you broil salt beef for?

I couldn't see an appropriate category for this so apologies for the AIBU, but I could do with some urgent advice Grin

I'm currently broiling a 2.7kg salt beef joint, but the recipe I'm using is based on a joint weighing 1.6kg and says broil for 2.5hours.

I divided 2.5 by 1.6 then multiplied by 2.7 and got 4 hours 20 minutes! Is this correct?

I can't seem to find any general time per weight guides for broiling beef.

Probably about 4 hours. Not broiling though? That's grilling. Salt beef should be simmered in a pot with water and some veg.

You're going to grill salt beef for 4 hours? What exactly are you expecting to end up with?

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/12/2020 18:09

This recipe for a 2.5kg joint says 2.5-4 hours "until tender" so I think it's a matter of prodding it until you think it's done.

@MereDintofPandiculation thank you for this great recipe! I only read it this morning unfortunately, but will definitely use it next time along with the serving suggestions.

I ended up broiling the joint (I never mentioned grilling it) for about 3.5 hours until it tasted right, but I'm sure it will be improved using your recipe.

Did you mean “boiling”? “Broiling” is an Americanism for grilling.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 27/12/2020 12:14

You will end up with a flip flop if you broil for 4 hours 🤣

CandyLeBonBon · 27/12/2020 12:18

Yeah. Can't imagine it's broiling!

ErrolTheDragon · 27/12/2020 12:20

'Broil' used to confuse me greatly when I read American or Canadian books when I was a kid, with no Internet to look things up on.

GenderApostate19 · 27/12/2020 12:44

I always thought that broiling was the same as braising, it’s a ridiculous term for grilling something, but then a lot of American terms make zero sense ( Bangs, for instance 🙄).

VitreousHumour · 27/12/2020 13:05

But... even boil doesn’t make sense and would also lead to shoe leather. Do you mean braise? Or simmer?

CandyLeBonBon · 27/12/2020 14:03

Yes It must be braising surely!

Kazziek · 27/12/2020 14:07

I simmer my 2kg beef on a very low heat for around 2 - 2.5 hours. Check it at 2hrs, if it's still firm it needs another half hour. The cookery website Olive has a great salt beef recipe

Hoppinggreen · 27/12/2020 14:09

I doubt it’s being broiled, I think OP must have got her terminology wrong
Broiling is American for grilling

You did mention grilling it. Broil means grill.
