To think lego are increasingly mugging consumers off with tiny pieces

DS (4) got his first lego classic box this Christmas. I got one of the biggest, most ex expensive boxes there was.

When I was a child, my first lego set (my mother still has it) had LOADS of proper building blocks - 1x4, 1x6, roof pieces etc.

Now they all seem bulked out with tiny tiny flat pieces - theres not enough to build a proper house, not even close.

Definitely NBU. I think the same evertytime I buy my DS Lego. They are tiny.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/12/2020 11:26

I think I'm going to have to do the pick a brick. It looks expensive but actually having compared it with what's in a set I think I'll get far more proper bricks this way

Its ridiculous. As a kid I remember we only really had the 2x bricks ( 2x2 2x4 2x3 etc). Doors, windows and angled roof parts.

Now - everything is 1x. Super small, super narrow, tons of flat parts, tons of 1x1 size stuff.

I miss it.

very true

I have seen a few kids keeping their duplos to bulk up their built!

There's also so many sets focusing on one built, instead of free play.
We get a bit of both, and got a few ikea boxes last time we went.

You can usually buy bags of standard lego on Ebay. Just put them in a securely tied pillow case and put them in the washing machine once you get them :D

formerbabe · 26/12/2020 11:39

I got my dd a Lego set...cost nearly £60. She made it in one morning and I couldn't believe how small the actual build was.

Fudgefeet · 26/12/2020 11:44

I bought my youngest the Harry Potter privet drive kit and was shocked at how tiny it was for the price. I talked myself out of it multiple times but then bought it when I couldn’t think what else to get.
It’s tiny, stupidly expensive but we had the quietest, most peaceful Christmas ever. I wish I’d bought the whole castle now.

Never any bloody base plates either.

Hate sets with lots of small builds but nothing to keep them together on.

Wondergirl100 · 26/12/2020 11:46

My best lego tip OP is ebay. It is such a rip off otherwise. You can get huge piles of lego on ebay and also look for particular shapes etc you actually want. My kids have a big pile of it all from Ebay and means they can properly use their imaginations.

triceratops12 · 26/12/2020 11:48

YANBU - I miss duplo that always seemed better as the bricks were bigger

formerbabe · 26/12/2020 11:49

@fudgefeet

Yes! That's the one my dd got too. It's lovely but I imagined it to be much bigger than it was Xmas Confused

ABigFatCrow · 26/12/2020 11:51

Yes! Do got a 1500 set piece for his birthday and u couldn't just build a wall or a tower like I enjoyed as a child. It was all intricate and not as good imo.

gassylady · 26/12/2020 11:52

Third vote for eBay many sellers of bags of Lego by the kilo. We have had some great random buys of both normal Lego and technics components

Gogreengoblin · 26/12/2020 11:53

Wilko do sets their own brand that fit with lego and are miles cheaper.

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/12/2020 11:55

I got dd 2 boxes of lego classic and I was quite disappointed as well. There was a tiny base plate in it and then lots of stuff to build cars etc. I was wanting to build houses lol.

Aisforharlot · 26/12/2020 12:00

Completely agree! you cant do anything with the tiny pieces afterwards, they're all but useless for free play.

DressingGownofDoom · 26/12/2020 12:04

When I was young Lego was something you sat down with and built little houses for hours. Now it's all big expensive sets and even the small boxes you have to build a particular thing. So DS would need me sit beside him and basically do it for him.

DressingGownofDoom · 26/12/2020 12:04

And then what do you do when it's built? Just look at it forever? Keep endlessly building the same thing? Rubbish.

Fizbosshoes · 26/12/2020 12:05

I think lego has gone into themes and specialised kits with far less "generic" pieces that can be used for a variety of different builds. I bought DS a kit he specifically asked for. It wasnt esp expensive (about £25,) but the build is tiny. And way smaller than the size of the box would lead you to believe!

DeathMetalMum · 26/12/2020 12:08

We have loads of Lego, a bit of second hand stuff and then quite a few lego friends/disney sets. Dd1 is nearly 10 Dd2 8 we have bought a couple of boards separately but they spend loads of time doing free play and changing the sets.

For a while all they wanted for their birthday/Christmas or spend their money on was lego. But money well spent as they play with it all the time.

FollowThatStarTonight · 26/12/2020 12:11

I've just bought some 1kg bags from eBay. Even they are pretty expensive but hopefully have some variety.

Laiste · 26/12/2020 12:26

We love Lego in our house. We have Lego from my own childhood (70s) thrown in with Lego from when my 3 older ones were little (late 90s early 2000s) and when youngest DD asked for some more Lego last year we bought her one of those big yellow boxes. (£££!)

Well - the contents was shocking and really disappointing. As pp said - no base plates - the new colours were lovely but the amount of actual usable building blocks was pathetic! %60 of the box was teeny bits which none of us could work out how to use and we had to bag them and keep them away from DD in case she ate them or trod on them!

What I will say about lego is it lasts forever. When I was a small child (I’m now in my 50s) my grandmother bought me a house building set that I played with every time I went to stay. When I had my own DC she passed it onto me. It’s now part of our overall lego collection, which will get passed onto my own grandchildren. There aren’t many toys that will last that long and still be fun for the next generation.
