To open the bubbly even though I can't drink a whole bottle?

My lovely bil & sil sent me a bottle of Champagne, I'd love to open it but I'm such a lightweight 2 glasses and I'm squiffy. Do I open it? How can I keep it bubbly without a thingymebob that you put on the top to keep it fresh?

I'll have to drink it myself because dh doesn't like it. Or shall I keep it for 3035 when the world is able to socialise?

YABU - drink it

MoiraNotRuby · 25/12/2020 16:57

Yes just open it, you deserve it! Drink it over the next few days and it will be lovely.

iago · 25/12/2020 16:58

Put a teaspoon in the bottle - handle side down - and put it in the fridge. That's worked in the past for me!

ParkheadParadise · 25/12/2020 17:01

Enjoy 🍾🥂

Drink the champagne!!

And also, what is this magic you speak of and why didn't I hear of this already?!

Disorganisedfish · 25/12/2020 17:02

Drink it! Merry Christmas!

(Also, second the spoon thing thing!)

BlueSuffragette · 25/12/2020 17:02

Open it. Drink a few glasses then put tin foil over the top and store it in the fridge over night. Drink the rest tomorrow. It will still be bubbly. SmileWine

I agree with the teaspoon trick, although we almost always finish the bottle so not a common problem in this house 🍾🥂

Leeds2 · 25/12/2020 17:06

I would have no problems downing a bottle of champagne by myself, so I would definitely open it!
I have never heard of the spoon in the bottle trick though.

Keepthechangeyafilthyanimal1 · 25/12/2020 17:08

Another one for the teaspoon trick! Works for anything carbonated!

Covidisdrivingmecrazy · 25/12/2020 17:09

If it's any consolation half bottles seem to cost more than full bottles. I was going to buy a half bottle as I'm the only drinker in the house but the half bottle was more expensive. I'll just cook with the left over!

MrsKingfisher · 25/12/2020 17:11

It's in the fridge! I will be opening it in a couple of hours and tomorrow I'll add orange juice and drink the rest for breakfast Xmas Grin Merry Christmas!

The spoon in the bottle thing is something they do in bars. It's said to keep it fizzy for 24 hours.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/12/2020 17:12

Dh said he wasn’t going to have any champagne so I opened mine anyway and he somehow managed to have 2 glasses...

I don’t believe in the teaspoon trick but a stopper or cling film over the top will work- it will be perfectly drinkable tomorrow.

Crankley · 25/12/2020 17:13

The teaspoon thing absolutely works.

Redcrayons · 25/12/2020 17:18

The teaspoon trick definitely works.
Mind you I’d probably push on through and finish the bottle.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/12/2020 17:19

Scientific American says not Wink

YerAWizardHarry · 25/12/2020 17:20

@FangsForTheMemory they absolutely don't do that in bars, we'd get a bollocking for having any beverage open to the element even in a fridge. There are specific stoppers that can be used in bottles of fizz that any venue worth their salt would have invested in

ShinyGreenElephant · 25/12/2020 17:34

Teaspoon works, I'm pregnant but opened a bottle to have a glass with Oj at breakfast and I'm just having another one now. Will have another glass at new years and it should still be drinkable (hopefully!) That's my limit though until baby arrives in Feb so DH will have to finish the rest off

JovialNickname · 26/12/2020 20:12

The teaspoon thing so does work, I was sceptical at first, but it really does keep your champers nice and fizzy!

Barmbraic · 26/12/2020 20:17

As someone who opened a bottle thinking there's no way I'd finish it, I say aim high as I open bittle #2

AuntyMabelandPippin · 26/12/2020 20:20

Teaspoon does work. I opened one on Christmas Eve and finished it this afternoon.

sixthtimelucky · 26/12/2020 20:21

Drink the Champagne

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/12/2020 20:24

It will keep for a while even when you open it - but I've made a very good champagne sorbet before now if you want to use up the remainder of the bottle.
