Did my mouthwash convince me I had covid? 🤣

Hi all, basically I noticed I couldn’t taste properly last week. I could taste just bland, smell fine, feel okay but had sore throat for a few days prior.

Got a covid test - negative. So what on earth has caused my dull taste buds?!

Assumed it was from the bad throat. Also both dc had colds so maybe a cold, (both tested due to coughs and negative).

BUT I used corsodyl mouth wash last week after suggestion from dentist due to wisdom tooth issue. I only used it once or twice last week but probably used a little too much! The loss of taste happened the next morning.

Today I was reading the bottle and there it was. Corsodyl can indeed affect your taste buds. So yeah my mouth wash made me think I had covid!

After googling I’ve read that it’s a very common side effect for many mouthwashes.

Has anyone else experienced the same?! How can I get my taste buds to recover?!

What it is in this stuff?!

I’ve had issues with other mouth washes in the last. Drying my mouth and throat out and weird side effects but this was one was recommend to me!

the strong ones make my mouth sore, only use cool mint now. hope it sorts out soon for you.

TillyTopper · 25/12/2020 15:28

I haven't had that effect from mouthwash, however I think loss of taste etc can be things other than CV19. Personally I've had a bit of a throat infection and it's taken away smell/taste. Perhaps you've been a bit run down and under the weather, but not had CV19. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I had the same with corsodyl, it mangled my poor wee tongue. I found diluting it helped but I’ve not found anything that does the same job without the burning.

Frosty2894 · 25/12/2020 15:30

@warmandtoasty2day corsodyl is quite strong. I have an impacted wisdom teeth and dentist recommend to make sure it’s clean. I may just use a dab of it on the area from now rather than a mouthful.

@TillyTopper absolutely. I’ve lost my sense of smell and taste numerous times from cold etc. I have had a sore throat. But this is bizarre. I can taste but it’s dulled. Thank you!

@TyrionsNextWife it tastes horrid doesn’t it. I’m thinking of just using a dab on the needed area and not a mouthful.

Didn't you have another thread on this under a different name?

If not' you have a twin 😂

MiddleClassMother · 25/12/2020 15:41

I did this, (when covid was relatively new and loss of taste smell was just added to the list) it took me ages until I googled it and it turns out it was the chlorhexidine in the mouthwash. I'd bought a different one to normal and it was designed for people with gun disease, only used it a few times as it tasted bloody awful!

Utini · 25/12/2020 15:46

I've had the same from corsodyl. You can buy a corsodyl gel, that might be a better option if you just need to treat your wisdom teeth.

WellThankyouAJPTaylor · 25/12/2020 15:59

Read title and thought, "Corsodyl". 😆

Heatherjayne1972 · 25/12/2020 16:25

It has chlorhexidine in it
It’s designed to ‘stick’ to your soft tissues ( gums tongue lips cheeks etc) for 12 hours which is why you taste it for ages afterwards

Also stains your teeth a lovely wood brown colour. Yum

MagicSummer · 25/12/2020 16:30

I had the same experience with Corsodyl - horrid stuff! I have quite a few problems with my gums and my hygienist always recommends using a salt water mouthwash rather than a brand. It is cheaper, works better and no side effects (just don't swallow it). It works by hardening up the gums.

olivo · 25/12/2020 16:46

There is an alcohol free one which is much gentler. I have also never found that it stains my teeth.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/12/2020 17:14

I had the same problem with Dentyl, it changed my taste completely

earlydoors42 · 25/12/2020 18:36

I didn't have this problem but used mouthwash last week. It burned the scars inside my gums that I still have from my fixed brace 30 years ago! Then they hurt all day and my mince pie made them burn too!

Strong stuff it seems!

Frosty2894 · 26/12/2020 20:52

Thanks all. Made me feel a little better. Had a neg covid test and started to convince myself I needed another but it’s likely the corsodyl or from my bad throat. My taste buds have been up and down for a week. Been it away in the cupboard for now! Will try salt and warm water instead I think!

I’m on the waiting list to have said tooth out at the hospital so hopefully not too long (likely to be a while though!). I’ve been having fewer problems since switching to an electric toothbrush rather than manual!

Definitely corsodyl. It always happens to me. I used it the other night for the first time in ages and said to DH “when I wake up in the morning and panic that I have Covid because I can’t taste anything, remind me I used corsodyl before bed!”
