About Fridge food placement

Dh did the big food shop yesterday and put it all away as I was doing other Christmas prep. I have looked in the fridge this morning and he has put all the fresh meat on the third shelf up 😳. Now to be fair the turkey is on the bottom shelf and leaves no room for anything else it then surely you would move things around and put the meat on the next shelf up? The meat is in enclosed plastic packages but under that glass shelf are apples, carrots and lettuce which would all be eaten raw.
I am panicking and mad as I know meat should be kept low down in case it drips. However as I said it is in plastic so am I overreacting as I am rather stressed already about Christmas etc and maybe I am focusing my anxiety on this unnecessarily .
So Aibu or is this bad?

I would just move it now and wipe the shelf down before you put the veg on it

There’s a plastic shelf separating the meat from the fruit and veg, it’ll be fine, it’s not like he’s put the meat packaging directly on top of your salad stuff

inappropriateraspberry · 24/12/2020 09:18

If everything's in sealed packaging I wouldn't worry. It was/is different when you could only get meat 'fresh' from a butcher or butcher's counter and was wrapped loosely in paper etc.
Is any raw meat likely to 'leak?'

inappropriateraspberry · 24/12/2020 09:18

And I'm a vegetarian!

dementedpixie · 24/12/2020 09:19

I'd shift it around so the fresh meat is above the turkey and then the other stuff is on the 3rd shelf instead.

toomuchfaster · 24/12/2020 09:20

I put pre-packed meat on the bottom shelf but it's directly above the salad drawer!! Felt wrong initially but I've got used to it.

CertainGecko · 24/12/2020 09:22

I never understand this anyway. I understand the principle, but every fridge I've had has had the veg drawer at the very bottom which is never 100% sealed and anything that drips usually seeps under the shelf above the veg drawer, thus dripping onto the veggies.

Thank you everyone for replying, glad that I am overreacting a bit and not having to throw a load of food away!
Have a happy Christmas all x

You're not actually serious that you would throw other food away because there is packaged meat on the shelf above?? That is verging or crazy OP!

ILoveYoga · 24/12/2020 10:36

There are actually health and safety guidelines on this that restaurants etc need to follow to ensure raw meats don’t come in contact with other foods. Serious health problems can arise if blood / juices from meats/poultry drip onto foods that won’t be cooked it not heated up enough to kill bacteria

I can certainly tell you that my DH would not be aware of any of these or even think you don’t put raw meats on top of uncooked foods

So rearrange the food. Later tell your DH why things need to be arranged in certain manner for food safety reasons.

@ILoveYoga yes, but that is usually meat in open tubs or packaging and on a large scale.
A fridge at home with a sausages, bacon etc all in sealed packets is very different.

CottonSock · 24/12/2020 13:25

I think supermarket meat is probably pretty well sealed these days.

Mapletreelane · 24/12/2020 13:34

I remember being taught in home ec in the late 80s how to pack the fridge. However that was when a lot of meat was from the butchers and the fridge shelves were wire. Now the meat from supermarkets is sealed and a lot of fridges have glass shelves. So we're a lot more protected. Don't stress too much. X

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/12/2020 13:37

It's very rare supermarket sealed meat would leak. It would be ludicrous to throw other food out because sealed meat was above it...

ILoveYoga · 24/12/2020 16:19

@inappropriateraspberry the screen shot I posted is for home use

heseesyouwhenyouaresleeping · 24/12/2020 16:44

yes, you are over-reacting Confused

if you are that worried, just put your fridge on a colder temperature.

I know you have to separate things, but I don't know anyone who would just plonk a slice of raw meat next to an open ready meal . They are either packaged and sealed, or in some kind of recipient

WhatTiggersDoBest · 24/12/2020 16:56

YANBU it's just good food hygiene. But I think as a one-off you'll be fine as long as you usually have a clean fridge and don't constantly move around where you put the raw meat.

MaskingForIt · 24/12/2020 17:17

Do you have a salad or vegetable drawer underneath the bottom shelf, or is the bottom shelf the lowest point in the fridge?

If you have a lower drawer then YABU.
