To think mental health units are often not helpful for people with depression/bpd

Dsis is often admitted to the loca acute unit for risk related behaviours. She’s sectioned so has no choice in the matter if she refuses they tend to section her anyway. She finds the ward to bad both staffing wise and how unsettled it is but obviously has no choice but to go there. To think maybe they should think of setting up crisis houses more suitable for people struggling with depression rather than units?

I’m so sorry your dsis is going through that.

I was admitted to a psychiatric unit a number of years ago, I have bipolar. I can honestly say it saved my life. The treatment I received put me on the road to recovery and although I’ve had a few blips since, I’m mainly well.

I've worked in them.

They're pitiful.

I left that field of work.

I'm sorry but I agree with you.

Loshad · 23/12/2020 21:34

I think the problem is that most service users are chronically unwell, and tend to dislike the interventions they are given. The cinderella servie of the NHS

Iwonder777 · 23/12/2020 21:35

I found the treatment in them to be pitiful.

Provision of a safe place only.

Thelnebriati · 23/12/2020 21:35

YANBU, the local units take in admissions by postcode, not diagnosis. So one time I was on a mixed sex ward with people who had depression and anxiety, shell shock, disassociation, and paranoid schizophrenia. It was awful.

Iwonder777 · 23/12/2020 21:36

I am highly trained and found the provision heart breakingly poor.

Left the service.

Iwonder777 · 23/12/2020 21:38

I hope I'm not making you feel worse by agreeing but i wanted to be honest

Tellmelies65 · 23/12/2020 21:46

No I much prefer hones. A staff member told me when I went into vist her that it wasn’t the right place for her it causes her a lot of distress. I fully understand why the doctors have to section her to keep her safe but I just wish there was somewhere better for her.

Family member was sectioned many times and I was disgusted with the appalling standards of "care"

Tellmelies65 · 23/12/2020 21:54

AnnabelDickson Yes it’s terrible hope your family member is doing better now

Thinking of you and your lovely sis.

I've a brother with complex mh problems

Trained extensively with him in mind

Found very little of worth in the psych system

Still disappointed but know there is hope out there.

X take care

my advice is step away from random advice and story sharing on the internet. It will do you no good to hear other people’s experiences, even well meaning ones.
Be there for her, walk with her in her darkest hours, when she can’t walk, lay down next to her.
Hugs to you both.
