AIBU to wonder if a 2 hour driving lesson is too long?

Just that really. My friend said her daughter found it too long. Driving instructor who is obviously the expert recommended 2 hour lessons and don't do any shorter ones. Just don't want to waste my money if it's better to have 1.5 hour ones

I only ever had 2 hour sessions, by the time I finished faffing around with the seat and mirrors I'd have no time for actual learning otherwise.

I had a one week intensive course. Three hours in the morning and two in the afternoon with a two hour lunch break.
Did the trick. Passed the test on the Friday afternoon.
So there's no hard and fast rules. What suits one may not suit another.

@Funkyslippers Seems a bit long yes. You should give it a go though and see how it goes.

Mine were 2 hour. Another to say that yeah, the first few lessons were overwhelming (I needed a tea break in the first!), but after that it was routine. And in the early lessons the instructor was driving between home and where I was learning so that takes time off.

Might be too much for some at the start - too tiring.

But deffo useful at the end.

I had 6 x 2 hour lessons and then took my test - in London so very good experience. I loved it because it only took 6 weeks to get my licence. I loved driving and felt totally at ease from the first time I sat behind the wheel. Two years later I got my Advanced Licence - not because I needed it, but specifically so that when men made derogatory remarks about women drivers I could say "Do you have one of these?".

Two hours was perfect for me right from the start but we're a 30 min drive from the nearest city so needed the time. Once I got closer to my test we used the first hour of the lesson to do a mock test then the second hour to practice what I'd been marked down on.

Skigal86 · 23/12/2020 12:51

I had a few weeks of 1 x 1hr per week, then increased to 2x 2 hrs per week and then back to 1 x 1hr when I was ready for test but couldn’t get a slot for a few weeks just to keep me ticking over and then practiced in my own car with my dad or friend in between.

StrawBeretMoose · 23/12/2020 12:55

Two hours was too long for me, but I didn't need to drive far to practice, the test centre was close by. I did a mix of 1 hour and 1.5 hour lessons.

Osirus · 23/12/2020 13:04

2 hours for me. Surely you’re only just getting into it after 1 hour?

It was fine, was never tired.

Glad I don’t have to do it again though.

Brighterthansunflowers · 23/12/2020 13:13

I had 90 minute lessons which was the perfect amount of time I think.

If she’s finding it too long though it may be worth looking for another instructor who offers a range of time slots. She may find an hour suits her now as a complete beginner but depending where she lives it may be better to have longer lessons leading up to her test to be able to drive further and familiarise herself with more places and types of conditions.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 23/12/2020 13:18

All mine were 2hrs as i lived in the countryside with the nearest large towns a 30 minute drive away (test centre was 30 minutes away as well).

I passed after 3 months of lessons, all 2 hrs.

CleanQueen123 · 23/12/2020 13:25

I used to have 4 hour long driving lessons.

I didn't start with them being that long. It took me a long time and quite a few tests to pass because I don't do well under test conditions.

I really enjoyed them, but I love driving so 4 hours gave me enough time to really get into the groove. It also meant I'd driven around most of Hampshire by the time I passed and had no problem doing long motorway drives to visit my mother who was 200 miles away.

pilates · 23/12/2020 13:34

My DD has two hour lessons and is fine with it. She did get a bit tired for the first couple of weeks but feels she did benefit from it.

mindutopia · 23/12/2020 13:35

Mine were 2 hours, which seemed fine. I already knew how to drive (learned to drive living abroad, but not in the UK), so maybe it would be different if you were just starting and had literally never sat behind the wheel before. The nearest town is about 25 minutes away, so we used to drive there, drive around and practice things, and then drive back. Anything shorter just wouldn't have made sense as I'd just been driving down boring quiet country lanes.

mistermagpie · 23/12/2020 13:36

I did an intensive course so it was about 6 hours a day for four days and the test was on the fifth. It was one of the worst weeks of my life, I hated it, but I don't think it was 'too much' and I did pass.

LittleBearPad · 23/12/2020 13:37

I think I started with an hour for a few weeks and then did 2 hours. It’s pretty mentally tiring to begin with I think.

OhWhyNot · 23/12/2020 13:41

Hello My driving instructor would do 1 1/2 hours which was right for me. I think depends on the area you are learning in. Lots of traffic and little driving an hour isn’t enough

I found two hours too long

PlanBea · 23/12/2020 13:45

I did one of those intensive courses when I learned to drive - 30 hours of driving in 7 days, I think the first lesson was 2 hours, the next day was 3, then it was five 5-hour lessons. I was dreaming about driving by the time the test came round! Passed first time, I'd do it that way again if I needed to. Depending on where you are, in an hour's lesson a lot of that could be taken up with driving from your home to the test centre area and back again, giving no time to practice on those particular corners for reversing round etc
