To ask about piercing aftercare

Following on from yesterday’s thread, I got my tragus pierced today. However, the piercer said I shouldn’t clean it today and to clean it twice a day with salt water from tomorrow. I’m just wondering if leaving it the day it’s done is the usual advice. Please don’t come for me, it’s my first cartilage piercing so unsure of aftercare

I had a google www.healthline.com/health/tragus-piercing-pain#aftercare

DON’T use any soap, shampoo, or disinfectants on the area for the first day after the piercing.

LawnFever · 22/12/2020 21:29

I have a few piercings and was always advised just to use salt water but tbh my last one wouldn’t heal and I used this stuff and it was brilliant and it healed so well

@LawnFever were you told to leave it alone for the first day though?

One day of cleaning or not isn't going to affect the outcome so just do what you feel is best.

noideabutstilltrying · 22/12/2020 22:16

I had a tragus piercing and used wound wash on it at first and then just cleaned it the shower with the plain running water. It healed up fine. You'll be fine to leave it alone on day 1. Don't move the jewellery too much as you'll get piercing bumps. Try not to sleep on it and try to keep your hair off the piercing as much as possible.

The tragus is a fairly easy piercing to heal.

Ccccchanges · 22/12/2020 22:30

If it’s what the, presumably professional, piercer recommended I would follow their advice.

Sn0tnose · 22/12/2020 22:37

I’ve got both of mine done and that’s normal. Just follow the advice of the piercer and, most importantly, don’t fiddle with them.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 22/12/2020 22:49

Honestly, I've got 13 holes pierced in my ears and the best aftercare I've ever had is when I just leave them the hell alone. Whenever I've used salt water or recommended lotions and potions it's just prolonged the healing. I find it all heals quicker when I just allow it to clean with running water when I wash my hair, a gentle dry and keeping the area generally clean day to day. No poking or bathing or prodding. Just leave the hell alone.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 22/12/2020 22:50

In fact the piercer commented on my last one (re-pierce of a closed up conch after I took it out to have an op) that mine heal really well. When I told him my philosophy he totally agreed!

StripyHorse · 22/12/2020 23:05

Yes I was told to leave piercings for the first day.
You need less salt in the water than you think.
If you sleep on the side of your tragus piercing, get a u-shaped travel pillow so you can put your ear in the hole.

Alice190720 · 23/12/2020 09:39

What about turning it’s slightly while cleaning like is advised with lobe piercings? I’m quite god at leaving the piercing alone, just not sure if it needs to be turned slightly

FFS you were given advice by a professional piercer, who presumably you trusted to stick a needle in you! Yet you then decided to ask a load of ransoms who pretty much told you to leave your piercing alone and follow the advice. So now you pop up asking about twisting it. NO! LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE

PastaAndPizzaPlease · 23/12/2020 09:45

Do NOT turn it under any circumstances. That’s very out of date advice. You’ll make the wound worse everytime you do it.

Leave for 24 hours, spray with a saline mix a few times daily after that, although as the player above says, my best healings have been the ones I barely looked at!

lemonsandlimes123 · 23/12/2020 09:45

And that hasn’t been advised with lobe piercings in about 20 years unless you think of Claire’s as good place to get pierced

shitinmyhandsandclap · 23/12/2020 09:46

I had my nose pierced at the beginning of December, piercer advised to leave it alone that day but to start saltwater bathing the next day, once a day.

I was just amazed that they pierced with a ring, thought it would be a stud to start

LawnFever · 23/12/2020 09:48

Yes leave it alone for a day or so, then use salt water solution

I only used the piercing manic tea tree solution after it really wouldn’t heal so no need to get that now

And no, don’t twist it Smile

A ring is really typical, my last two piercings have been with a ring

I was getting conflicting advice, the piercer I wanted to go with said they couldn't carry out any piercings due to tier 3 restrictions but this one was fine to do it. Original piercer also said they couldn't pierce with a ring but the one I went to said they only pierce with a ring.

Anyhoo, I love it. I always wanted my nose pierced but my DP wouldn't let me, I dumped him last month after 15 years and thought sod it Grin

Clarinet53 · 23/12/2020 16:16

You shouldn’t be use rings in fresh piercings. They move more than stud type jewellery.

Incrediblehulky · 23/12/2020 16:57

It's quite unusual to pierce with a ring straight off. Usually it's best to let a stud completely heal and then try a ring. The best thing is to leave it alone as best you can, rinse it with clean water in the shower and spray with a wound cleaner such as Neilmed onto it afterwards. Good luck!

I’ve never heard of a stud being used to do a tragus piercing. I’d have thought a bar bell or ring as it’s done with a needle - studs are used with a gun aren’t they? You wouldn’t have a tragus done with a gun

All this is making me think about wanting another piercing!

Incrediblehulky · 24/12/2020 07:41

@LawnFever
I was responding to the poster who was saying they were surprised to have had their nose pierced with a ring and the subsequent discussion that followed that post. Also by stud I mean a post/ bar bell. No piercing should be done with a gun.
