to ask if you make a noise when you yawn? (lighthearted)

(Disclaimer: I realise this kind of stuff is totally unimportant in the scheme of things, but right now thinking about trivia is somewhat helping to take my mind off what's going on in the world, and I'm sure I can't be the only one! Grin )

One of my 'irrational pet peeves' is DH doing that 'Uh, uh, uh, uuuuuuh' thing that people do when they yawn. Perhaps it's just because he really 'milks' it and it gets on my wick, but also... maybe I'm an atypical yawner so to speak, but... I never make a noise when I yawn. (I'm not stifling the noise, it just doesn't occur to me to make a noise in the first place.) So I don't really understand it when other people do it.

Genuinely curious as to whether it's just me... and also hoping someone can enlighten me on why people do it - DH just shrugged when I asked him. Grin

YABU = I usually make a sound when I yawn
YANBU = I don't usually make a sound when I yawn

Ugh I hate noisy yawners. Mostly because I 'catch' the yawn and it makes me irrationally annoyed that someone made me yawn against my will.

Now I'm yawning having written yawn so much. I'm very sensitive to yawn contagion!

blubberball · 22/12/2020 21:04

I make yawning sounds on behalf of the cat. I can't help it. The cat yawns, and I have to go Arrrrrrgh in sync.

HeadNorth · 22/12/2020 21:06

My DH does the big, hammed up yawn. Love the man to pieces - but not his OTT yawn Angry

Dilbertian · 22/12/2020 21:07

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I think I'm more likely to yawn noisily at home than anywhere else, so it's probably a feeling safe sort of thing.

dudsville · 22/12/2020 21:07

This thread also made me yawn! I can yawn quietly and mostly do, but up until my early 30s I had this weird noise that accompanied any yawn that was like a click in the deep recess of my throat. I was embarrassed by it so would stifle any yawn.

merryhouse · 22/12/2020 21:11

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

AdoraBell · 22/12/2020 21:13

I don’t. DH does the same as your DH OP drives me fucking nuts, and he knows it annoys me. Apparently he can’t help it.

maddening · 22/12/2020 21:13

Mine in the sound of deep breathing in and then out, it is not "vocal" though.

CovidCarol · 22/12/2020 21:30

Omg my DH does the bloody noise with a drawn out "ohhhhh" at the end 😡 No need.

cbt944 · 22/12/2020 21:32

I can't stand it when people on public transport do exaggerated musical yawns.

thistimelastweek · 22/12/2020 21:39

My husband does an outrageous exaggerated yawn. IN HIS SLEEP! Over and over and over again. It makes me feel violent.

piggywiggy123 · 22/12/2020 21:41

Yanbu- it is the same territory as very vocal sneezers!!

RandomGirl · 22/12/2020 22:27

Haha, apparently I’m a really loud yawner - winds my husband right up. I may exaggerate it slightly now I know how much it winds him up... 😂

Spanielmadness · 22/12/2020 22:29

I sometimes make a noise in my throat when I yawn, it’s completely out of my control and sounds like a creaky burp - very embarrassing!

FestiveFruitloop · 22/12/2020 22:40

Loving these answers, at least now I know it's not just me... 😂

And I do sometimes suspect DH of exaggerating it just because he knows it bugs me. 😂

I normally yawn silently, unless I'm joking about how tired I am then sometimes I'll do (what I think is) a comedy loud yawn for DP's benefit.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 22/12/2020 23:08

My ears pop when I yawn, so even though its quiet, maybe a little huuuuh, I instantly have to sniff to unblock my nose.

My DP is a dramatic yawner and does a little head shake after. Dont even get me started on his scream sneezing.

RacheyCat · 23/12/2020 01:36

Oh my god, my DH does this too. He didn't used to, which is even more irritating. It's loud, varies in tone, sounds almost orgasmic, and verges on screaming.

If he does it when we're out at the shops I tend to turn to him and ask neutrally, "are you okay?". I have also asked him if he makes that noise at work, to which he always says "I'm just yawning". But seriously, surely someone would tell him to STFU if he's making that noise at work? It's absurd.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/12/2020 01:38

IME experience noisy yawners are often making the point they are more tired than you Grin

But to be fair the people I know who did that were dicks so it's not a fair test!

TimeQuest01 · 23/12/2020 01:43

I think o may make a little noise spending in the intensity of the yawn, sometimes I can’t help it.

My husband doesn’t make noise when yawning, but his completely OTT sneezes drive me mad and if he had Covid, he would be a super spreader.

I’ve asked him to please be careful when he’s commuting now, people could throw him out of the train.

CalishataFolkart · 23/12/2020 01:52

My next door neighbour treats me to all his noises. He starts the bellow-yawn around 6pm every day. I have occasionally shouted “For gods sake go to bed if you’re that tired!”

Scream sneezing GrinGrinGrin

Ugh yes, dramatic sneezers are a pain too. Mind you, a former boss of mine used to make a really fake and über-dainty little 'Choo!' noise when she sneezed, which, after repeated occurrences, almost used to get me wishing she'd just blast it out instead...

RandomGirl · 29/12/2020 09:47

My father in law does seven hundred and fifty dramatic scream sneezes when he’s been drinking - makes me want to punch his lights out!

Changi · 29/12/2020 09:55

I don't but my DH does. It can be really loud. I have mentioned it but he doesn't believe me as he says he can't hear anything.

He says he never snores too.
