To have a cry?

Moved into a new rented property this weekend. Just me and DS (4).
It’s been hell, juggling pressure at work, move, pandemic, recruitment process for new job (didn’t get it) & the usual single mum shit.

Tonight I found out the oven in my new house doesn’t get any hotter than “a temperate breeze” and the hob doesn’t work at all. It’s not me. I’ve checked it’s switched on. I’ve checked the fuse box. I’ve fiddled and twiddled. It’s fucked.

I could scream.

Checked the oven turned on when I did the check in, obviously, but didn’t go further than that. Idiot.

Emailed agent but not sure if they’ll be able to sort by Christmas.

Don’t own a microwave or anything other than a toaster to “cook” with, so poor DS went to bed with toast, fruit and a bowl of cereal (not the end of the world I know, but it’s bloody Christmas).

Can I have a cry without being considered an utter soft head?

Just to double check, does it have a clock or a timer? I know so many people who think their oven is broken when actually the timer just needs resetting. Always worth a Google /YouTube search for common problems with that model

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 23/12/2020 09:52

We had no hob one Christmas although as did have a working oven. Ended up using a steamer and a camping stove. We now always have the camping stove as a standby in the shed.

AnaisNun · 23/12/2020 09:55

@Username642243

It has a timer but it isn’t functional with the actual cooker IYSWIM.

If anyone fancies a laugh, it’s actually this model/make. The reviews are exceptional - quite lyrical in places - and I can attest to the truth of them all... Envy

Am pleased landlord is shifting to sort it though. Haven’t met him yet, so it’ll be nice to say hello in person.

That was bloody unnecessary.

Sorry was responding to @PerveenMistry

Changeismyname · 23/12/2020 10:00

Am really pleased your LL is sorting for you. And sorry if my last post caused any upset - was a quote fail.

middleager · 23/12/2020 10:02

Good luck OP. My boiler broke a couple of weeks ago and we couldn't have anyone in as DS was isolating.

I had a good old cry and bit of a meltdown and then had a word with myself. Then we did get someone in and it wouldn't work due to electrical issues.
I cried again! Then I had a word with myself.
I think it was the fear of DC having a lousy Xmas because of it, but they were fine and it was fixed last week.

I'm glad you are getting it sorted now and the offers of help on here have restored my faith in humanity.
Have a lovely Christmas.

medusawashere · 23/12/2020 10:03

Yay! Glad it's getting sorted!

AnaisNun · 23/12/2020 10:03

@Changeismyname

Don’t worry - i did wonder if you were a shareholder at the company that made my oven though Wink x

Like you it had been one thing after another that led to the cry by the way and when we are already exhausted it's easy to tip the balance.

AnaisNun · 23/12/2020 10:11

@middleager

Oh I feel you, completely.

Me too, re: the help. It’s been really really really heartening.

My fingers are crossed for you, op. Sometimes things do work out ok in the end. I hope this is one of them.

Poppingnostopping · 23/12/2020 10:25

OP as another single mum, I hear you! You have made an amazing effort to get yourselves into this new property- and it's just all that stress and exhaustion coming out. Glad your landlord is coming to help too. You sound like a great person, it's ok for children to see that sometimes we have bad days and sometimes we have to eat toast cos the cooker is broken, but we get up again and get it fixed. You are doing great as a mum, there's some very silly people on Mumsnet so ignore them!

AnaisNun · 23/12/2020 10:34

@Poppingnostopping

Oh hi there fellow SP! It’s hard isn’t it- you want everything to be magical for them (doubly so, I think sometimes- I’m certainly guilty of trying to be “two parents so therefore I must make everything twice as magnificent/magical/perfect” or whatever) and I certainly feel like because my childhood was shit, anything like a waft of merde towards DS sets me on high alert. So silly....

Hope you’re getting some downtime this Christmas too, and the kid(s) do the washing up!

Hope it’s sorted for you today AnaisNun
Have a fab Christmas with DS Flowers

Crying is totally necessary. Well done your landlord, come back and let us know how it works out. Three years ago I had just moved into the shittest ‘fixer upper’ (worst house on an okay street), and the oven exploded three days before Xmas, I really hear you. I used to walk up the shit drive with old builders gravel and waist high weeds to the broken pvc front door and think ‘I have failed I have failed I am failing’ and feel so bad for my two tiny kids.

Three years on I’m lying in my beautiful room in the renovated house and all is well!!! It will all be okay! I HOWLED on many occasions when on own in car (drop kids at school, park at back of supermarket car park, howl for ten mins, continue with day).

Sending you christmassy and unmumsnetty cheer and hugs.

Meruem · 23/12/2020 10:45

I feel your pain OP. The inner glass on my oven shattered last night. No idea why! Cue major panic! Managed to get a combi oven/microwave thing from Argos. But it’s so stressful when things like this happen. Hope you’re landlord gets it sorted properly for you.

ProfessorInkling · 23/12/2020 22:00

How’s your new oven OP? Sounds like you have an amazing landlord. Merry Christmas 🍷🎄

AnaisNun · 24/12/2020 12:14

Hello all- sorry it’s been a hectic couple of days.

New oven installed. Not exactly top of the line but landlord was lovely and kind- and thank goodness the oven at least gets hot.
Hob fixed too, which is great.

Landlord also checked in on a few other things and has gone away with a list of jobs he wants to do in the new year, and was super patient with my rambunctious (sp?) 4 year old, so I think we’ll be okay.

Forcing myself not to worry about all the other personal stuff I need to deal with until after Christmas, and seems that a stiff drink every 3-4 hours seems to do the trick Wink

ProfessorInkling · 24/12/2020 19:26

That’s a good strategy for many things... just keep swimming x

Hope DS isn’t gutted that jam toast is off the Christmas dinner menu!

binkyblinky · 01/01/2021 18:42

Hope you had a lovely Christmas OP X
