People riding bikes on pavements should slow down?

Walking in our local park, which forbids bikes being ridden on the main pavement (there are other areas to ride bikes), there are still a number of bike riders.

While I don't mind people riding bikes, what I do mind is the riders shouting excuse me and whizzing past without slowing down, making me have to jump out of the way to avoid an accident. Narrowly avoided such an accident today. It really takes some of the joy out of what should be a nice relaxing walk.

AIBU to think this is selfish, self-centred behaviour and that people should just try to be a bit more considerate of each other?

YANBU. I don't actually mind people riding bikes on the pavement within reason (e.g. little kids who wouldn't be safe on the road) but it's a pedestrian path so they should not be going fast or expect people to move out of their way quickly.

YANBU

"People riding bikes on pavements should slow down either stick to paths where they are allowed to go (roads or cycle tracks) or get off and walk."

There, fixed that for you.

Signed, a responsible cyclist.

YANBU. I don't mind bikes on pavements/paths but they should give way to pedestrians and get off and walk if necessary.

They assume everyone has good hearing, I am partially deaf and the number of times I’ve jumped out of my skin when they whizz past.

Lordamighty · 22/12/2020 18:01

Unless it’s a child they shouldn’t be on the pavement at all.

SlippersForFlippers · 22/12/2020 18:03

Yanbu, my hearing isn't great so even if they ring a bell or say excuse me I don't always hear.

yeOldeTrout · 22/12/2020 18:04

All you'll get is people ranting about irresponsible cyclists should never be on pavement & maybe cycling should never be allowed at all. tbh, it's hard to believe OP didn't want any other type of discussion.

Except not a single comment so far has said that and nor has OP.
Chimeraforce · 22/12/2020 18:07

Agree with OP. I cycle and walk.
On my bike, I slow down around people as they are unpredictable. I cba with causing or receiving an injury.

midgebabe · 22/12/2020 18:08

I don't mind , especially on the quieter paths alongside busy roads, if they are riding responsibly...so slow, stopping or diverting to help

Grasses · 22/12/2020 18:08

This is not really their fault though .. the number of people walking in the middle of a shared path who don't respond at all whether deafness or more often headphones, and you end up trying to pedal really slowly behind them for a few hundred metres
pickingdaisies · 22/12/2020 18:17

It's the responsibility of the cyclist to be aware of pedestrians though, it's not the responsibility of pedestrians to have eyes in the back of their heads. However Inconvenient that makes it for the cyclist. In the same way that on the road, car drivers have to watch for cyclists. I always stand aside for cyclists if I know they are there. But it's ridiculous how many give you no warning.
