To ask about Dettol Laundry Cleanser?

My machine is playing up, it no longer heats the water. I have ordered a new one but with Christmas and Covid disruption the delivery date is the end of January. So how on earth does this cleanser work when adding it to the fabric conditioner drawer? My fabric softener goes into the wash for literally 90 seconds I just timed it, surely it can't kill bacteria left on towels and bedding washed in cold water in 90 seconds? Has anybody added this in after the machine has filled up and taken the powder in or even poured it in during this process? I am currently doing a kettle of boiling water with bedding and towels but need something for normal clothes and underwear etc for the next 6 weeks, any other suggestions are welcome.

I would be wary of any appliance arriving if not already in the country

We design kitchens and any appliance that was ok order for a 6 week delivery back in November are still saying 6 weeks so have eventually had to cancel and find stock within the U.K.

@marthastew

Because of this Dettol laundry cleanser is totally unnecessary. It's manufactured and marketed by Reckitt Benkeiser who are pretty good at coming up with needless things and get us to part with our hard earned cash for them.
Yes and agree with this

We use cloth nappies and antibacterial laundry products aren’t even needed or recommended for them

OP, you’ve given me a happy memory of when my Mum’s twin-tub stopped working. Every day, she would fill up the bath with lukewarm water and biological powder and encourage me to stamp on it! It was sooo much fun

I use the whizz version in home bargains because it’s not tested on animals & dettoll still test on animals.

RichTeaCheddars · 22/12/2020 14:12

I recommend it. We use it for sports clothes Inc socks and shin pads. If it can stop that stink it will work for what you need.

billy1966 · 22/12/2020 14:26

What a dose OP.
I use the Dettol wash and put it in the main drawer.

If you had an old plastic tall bin you could put a couple of kettles of hot water, mix with detergent and soak for an hour and then load it in for a cold short wash.

Lots of clothes like fleeces and light gear only need a light wash.

Also as your wash is taking in water you could put a couple kettles of hot, not boiling water in.

Should do the job.
Be very mean with the washing too👍

Are there any Launderettes near you that you could take the washing to? There are two in my medium sized town and people travel from 10 miles away to use it. You could take a week’s worth of washing at once and have two or three machines running at the same time.

Lurkingforawhile · 22/12/2020 14:52

I put it in the main drawer with my liquid. Use it for gym and lycra stuff which all needs to be washed at 30 for some reason Hmm

Lurkingforawhile · 22/12/2020 14:52

There is also a Tesco own brand version

CollateralDamage1 · 22/12/2020 14:54

It stays in the drum for the rest of the wash... Its like a pre soak/wash thing.

randomsabreuse · 22/12/2020 14:56

I use it for slight nappy leaks and when I've forgotten to unload the machine. It's particularly good for machine unloading fails. Also tech sports gear which gets sweaty and can't wash on hot.

HettieHelvetica · 22/12/2020 14:56

@dementedpixie

You could try using halo sports wash as your detergent for a few weeks as it is antibacterial.
Will do a decent own brand alternative to this which is less than half the price.
CollateralDamage1 · 22/12/2020 14:58

Obviously your clothes smell of softener after the wash so you can bet there antibac /dettol sticks to... Good if you work in health care/ other than public facing role with covid atm.

@Lurkingforawhile

Tesco version is equally as good.
