To want to swab my own child

Preparefortheflaming · 22/12/2020 10:36

I’m not sure why my last post was deleted as I have read the rules re posting. Unfortunately I was busy and didn’t see any of the replies!
I would not be breaking the law to refuse my child being swabbed would I?

Surely it’s my right to chose whether my child is administered a throat and nose swab in school?

Can’t you volunteer at the school? Then you can be a help rather than a hinderance and swab your own child

HOkieCOkie · 22/12/2020 10:40

I’m sure you can refuse, not sure why you would. If it means your child can continue her/his education.

TheTrashBagIsOursCmonTrashBag · 22/12/2020 10:40

I’ve got no idea what the law is but do you mean you want to do the swabbing or do you mean you don’t want them swabbed at all?

Either way imo YABU.

00100001 · 22/12/2020 10:40

They aren't going to be swabbed. It's different test.

Hobbesmanc · 22/12/2020 10:41

Surely you got enough answers on the past post. You know the one that was taken down?

Preparefortheflaming · 22/12/2020 10:41

Yes I guess that would be an answer but I’m clinically vulnerable so would surely be exposing myself to a certain level of risk.

00100001 · 22/12/2020 10:41

Plus I'm fairly sure it's an optional test. So our school is asking parental permission

Preparefortheflaming · 22/12/2020 10:42

As I said above I didn’t see the answers before it got taken down!

Preparefortheflaming · 22/12/2020 10:43

That was for Hobbesmanc

That’s what I wanted to know. We’ve not been asked yet but there is time. So I can refuse. I personally would like to keep them home until Feb but would get fined.

How are they collecting the sample then? I thought it was a swab test but processed immediately on a lateral flow cassette thingy

Why would you want to refuse? Especially if you are clinically vulnerable

Santastealer · 22/12/2020 10:47

How old is your child? Secondary school children will be doing the test themselves with adult supervision.

Yea you can decline testing. My 4 year old would absolutely not accept anyone doing the test. It’s traumatic enough me doing it on him never mind a member of school staff. I wouldn’t consent to him having the tests and would homeschool him if that was the consequence of this.

Oooohbehave · 22/12/2020 10:48

Why would you refuse? Grow up.

PoodleMoth · 22/12/2020 10:49

Pretty sure it's not a swab test

OverTheRubicon · 22/12/2020 10:49

Or maybe you could gain a sense of perspective, appreciate that we're in a global pandemic, that we want to keep schools open, that as a critically vulnerable person you have a lot to gain from everyone agreeing for their child to be tested, and that the swabbing is likely to be done better and certainly more efficiently by schools and volunteers doing a lot of it, and suck it up?

Unless there's a massive dripfeed, yabvu (and if there's a drip feed, then that's U as well)

Preparefortheflaming · 22/12/2020 10:50

Because I’ve had the test and it’s extremely unpleasant even when administered to yourself. Imagine an untrained individual doing these swabs in your child’s nose and throat. Perhaps without the level of gentleness and care you might use if swabbing them yourself - because they have so many to do. If it was saliva from their mouth then yes all day long but not up their nose and at the back of their throat.

Preparefortheflaming · 22/12/2020 10:52

For those saying it’s not a swab - tell me what it is then.

OP posts:
Backbee · 22/12/2020 10:52

Lateral flow tests require a nasal swab but not a throat one.

Ok well if that’s the case that’s a vast improvement in my opinion. Where did you find this out please?

I responded to your other thread. I work in a school. No one is going to be swabbing your child, the plan is for students to do it themselves under supervision. Even so, children will only be tested in school with parental consent. Don't want him tested, don't consent. Simple. Obviously this means you will either have to get him tested yourself or self isolate but that's entirely your choice. No one is being compelled to do anything.

Just at secondary but with additional needs

They are also notoriously unreliable so the DofE guidance states that any child/member of staff who tests positive with a lateral flow test in school will have to have a further test (the full nose and throat one) outside of school to confirm that they do indeed have covid.

Thank you. That’s all I wanted to know. Very helpful. I appreciate a sensible answer Smile rather than just judgement

That’s sensible and I could do that one myself or take them to the test centre where they are fully trained and do many many tests per day
