Food shortages

Just been to my local Sainsbury and found empty shelves. No meat or vegetables. Whilst probably not to do with Brexit in this instance, is this a vision of the near future?

We were told project fear, but I am beginning to be seriously worried. How I wish there had never been a referendum! Those of us who voted to stay in the EU will suffer the consequences of this for years to come, as will our children and grandchildren.

It’s because twats are panic buying. End of.

terrywynne · 22/12/2020 09:35

It's more likely to do with the closing of borders to UK freight due to covid than Brexit right now.... (whether directly due to goods not arriving or to panic buying) combined with xmas. But yes this could happen again in January. Yay.

Womencanlift · 22/12/2020 09:37

And also because more people are now having to shop - because they now have to have Christmas at home when they were expecting to be elsewhere

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 22/12/2020 09:38

Panic buying has not been helped by the statement from supermarkets either. OP, I am distraught about Brexit, but there is no point panicking or looking for recrimination, it has happened. The only thing you can do now is to think about how you will meet your family's nutrition needs going forward. If you can, buy a slow cooker, get hold of grains and pulses and some tinned, frozen veg.

DDiva · 22/12/2020 09:39

Just got my sainsburys delivery. Nothing missing, got fruit, veg, salad, turkey etc I'm on the south coast tier 2.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 22/12/2020 09:39

It’s because the media stir up a frenzy and idiots panic buy.

Issues at Dover are being resolved already. Our supply chains are robust enough to cope with a two day delay.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 22/12/2020 09:40

I got my full ASDA delivery and I’m tier 4

FreshfieldsGal · 22/12/2020 09:40

I'm in Formby (NW England)
No food shortages here, I've been to M&S, Waitrose, and Tesco this morning and hot everything on my lists.

Maybe depends on whereabouts you are in the country?

dudsville · 22/12/2020 09:42

Never blame one another. If anyone is panic buying it's because they're frightened. A main goal of government is to keep people comfortable enough not to cause trouble. When people are frightened (or angry, etc.) they act outside of the norm. It's a failure of government, not your neighbours.

DHdweller · 22/12/2020 09:42

It’s Christmas and there are covid restrictions which means people worry and buy more than they usually would.

Aposterhasnoname · 22/12/2020 09:44

It’s panic buying twats, and isn’t everywhere. I’ve got everything on my Asda order coming later, just one sub of a different brand of mince pies.

Vitaminsss · 22/12/2020 09:47

I don’t think it’s necessarily just panic buying. It’s Christmas in a few days with more individual households buying a full Christmas lunch compared to previous years. Even without brexit and borders closing, you would still occasionally come across sold through lines due to the increased demand.

DailyPotion · 22/12/2020 09:48

This week was always going to be challenging for the supermarkets because all the Christmas food was suddenly in the wrong houses/parts of the country.

It was bound to cause some supply issues as people who thought they were being catered for elsewhere suddenly needed to provide Christmas at home.

Closing the ports won't have had any affect in the supply chain, yet, but it will naturally have made people anxious, I don't think you can criticise people for wanting to make sure their families are fed in uncertain times.

I'm sure, the disruption will only be short term. The sensible thing, would have been to advise people to have small stockpiles in, well in advance, rather than to criticise "preppers". In fact the DfE did write to schools several weeks ago advising us to make sure our kitchens are well stocked with non perishables before 1 Jan.

Chloemol · 22/12/2020 09:48

It’s nothing to do with brexit, it may possibly have something to do with the goods stuck at Dover and a lot to do with Christmas and panic buying cos we are having a four day bank holiday ( remember most people go mad at bank holidays just in case they starve!)

BarbaraofSeville · 22/12/2020 09:49

I went to M&S this morning for a couple of bits and my daily walk before starting work.

Got there before 8 am to find a queue of about 50 people waiting to get in, so went home again without bothering. No nice cheese here for Christmas Sad.

Went in Lidl yesterday afternoon and it was a bit decimated but not that much more than what you'd expect in the early evening. But I did notice that they had hardly any toilet roll.

Perfect storm of covid, Brexit and Christmas causing people to stock up.

wonderstuff · 22/12/2020 09:49

I think that you can put a lot of it down to panic buying at the moment.
Personally though I think it's very likely that the fresh produce that comes through Dover-Calais will become more expensive. Lots of drivers are reluctant to sign up to drive these routes at the moment as they fear delays and they're self employed so delays will cost them. So either we will have shortages for a while I January and/or the cost will rise because drivers will need an incentive to drive the route. It seems unlikely that we'll be able to have as many lorries going through Dover-Calais when we and the French are completing customs checks.

Apparently salad, citrus, cauliflower and broccoli shortages are expected if the current situation doesn't quickly improve.

LoudBatPerson · 22/12/2020 09:52

I haven't been to a supermarket, however had the big Christmas shop delivered today.

Two substitutions (different brand of butter and cabbage) but everything thing else arrived, including all meats and traditional winter veg.

LoudBatPerson · 22/12/2020 09:52

^ London- tier 4 btw as maybe it's different regionally.

Arnoldthecat · 22/12/2020 09:53

Thicko Brits gorging themselves for xmas and NY also exacerbated by irresponsible media reports of the French bullies closing the border.

Nottherealslimshady · 22/12/2020 09:54

My ASDA is packed with food, boxes and boxes of veg piled up by the doors. Only thing missing was Christmas puds but I think I left that too late.

Clutterbugsmum · 22/12/2020 09:55

Are people panic buying are they just buying their food for Christmas now they are not spending it with their families.

Samcro · 22/12/2020 09:56

just been to Asda. they were well stocked. sadly op you are one of those people making people panic,

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 22/12/2020 09:56

Both my local supermarkets are stocked to the brim with everything you could possibly want. Nothing to do with shortages, it’s 3 days away from Christmas it’s normal for this time of year.
Let’s stop trying to put the fear of god into people... because then that will cause panic buying. Posts like these are highly irresponsible.

Cheeseandlobster · 22/12/2020 09:59

@Samcro

just been to Asda. they were well stocked. sadly op you are one of those people making people panic,
This in spades. Ffs Hmm
snookercue · 22/12/2020 10:00

This again. It's not brexit.
