Food Shop Hell

PreRaphaeliteMotherhood · 21/12/2020 23:08

The fridge is empty, I have barely anything in the freezer, and only the basics in the cupboards. We are going to my parents’ for Christmas (tier 2, support bubble blah blah blah) but need to do a shop to get us through until our next delivery on the 28th. I also said I’d buy the alcohol for Christmas. It has just dawned on me that supermarkets on the 22nd are probably hell on earth, let alone with all the concerns about food shortages. And I’m going to have to take a 2 year old and a newborn with me.

Do I...
A) Go to the big Asda (our normal supermarket) and hope I survive?
B) Go to the much smaller and more expensive village ‘supermarket’ (Budgens) and hope I can do something that resembles a weekly shop but probably spend double what I usually would in the process?
C) Go to the slightly further away Waitrose because for some reason I feel like it might be less awful than Asda?

Fine*

We went to a big Morrisons an hour ago, it was dead and really well stocked.

Pimmsypimms · 21/12/2020 23:32

Go early op. I went to Aldi at 9.30 this morning (and that was way later than I had planned to go!) and it wasn't too bad, but by the time I left the retail park at 11ish (went to home bargains and the food warehouse) it was heaving!
I also went to Sainsbury's this afternoon (4ish) to get the stuff they don't sell in Aldi and it wasn't busy at all really, they still had plenty of turkeys and veg.
I would go as soon as it opens if you can and it might not be so bad. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

DH went to Asda today (click and collect) but he said the carpark seemed regular busy, not crazy busy. There was only 2 minor substitutions on our massive order too

hiredandsqueak · 21/12/2020 23:35

I went at 6pm to a Morrisons on the outskirts of Sheffield so a further five miles away than had I gone to the more local Tesco. Did a whole Christmas shop and was home with everything at half seven. Think it was the quietest least stressful Christmas shop I remember, No noticeable gaps, salad was looking thin though.

Icanflyhigh · 21/12/2020 23:36

Asda at 3am is lovely.

ohwhatamiserableyear · 21/12/2020 23:39

Go very early or in the evening. It really is the safest time to be in the stores.

Diddlysquatty · 21/12/2020 23:40

Waitrose seems the worst round here - think it’s all the people treating themselves to posh stuff at Christmas

Mammyloveswine · 21/12/2020 23:41

Meh I popped to Aldi at lunchtime with my 2 year old and it was well stocked and not mega busy... like it has been all lockdown!

AlwaysLatte · 21/12/2020 23:41

I would avoid Asda, or any other supermarket that sells things other than food as you'll get all the panicky last minute present shoppers in there! I was spin Waitrose last night at about 5 and it was pretty quiet. I drove past an Asda today and I noticed the car park was very full.

WorraLiberty · 21/12/2020 23:43
@EmmaGrundyForPM Sadly DH is working from 5.30 tomorrow. I would have gone today whilst DS was at nursery but the runaround car had yet ANOTHER puncture (the fourth this year, it just isn’t up to our country lane) so DH had to take the family car.
Go tomorrow night while he looks after kids

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 21/12/2020 23:43

Wait til your DH is home from work. It will feel so much worse with young children with you. Good luck.

Laufeythejust · 21/12/2020 23:43

I went to Tesco at 5pm and it was absolutely fine, bit busier than normal but lots of food on the shelves and only one person ahead of me in the queue.

DowntonCrabby · 21/12/2020 23:44

DH did a big shop at Asda at 11pm last night then grabbed a few bits from Sainsbos at 7 this morning, both were very quiet.

I’d time going to avoid taking the DC it’ll be much quieter very early or very late.

cherish123 · 21/12/2020 23:46

C but go very early. If you can get everything in Budgeon you could go there.

CarryOnFestiveNamechanging · 21/12/2020 23:49

I went to Tesco and M&S this evening at about 7 pm. They were both very quiet indeed and the shelves were full of food.

louderthan · 21/12/2020 23:49

I went to Waitrose at 5 this evening in a very busy town centre. It was fine. Had to queue to get in but for less than 10 minutes.

SkySports · 21/12/2020 23:49

What a dilemma....Confused

friendlycat · 21/12/2020 23:50

I would give your DH a list and let him get it on the way home from work.

Luckyrabbitfoot · 21/12/2020 23:50

Can you do a Morrison’s prime delivery? We have one coming tomorrow as I really don’t fancy going into a shop.

Dovesandkisses · 21/12/2020 23:51

Asda late night is fine. I went an hour ago and it was empty. What time does your dh finish work? Could you go when he gets home?

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 21/12/2020 23:52

Do a Morrison’s Amazon Prime order?

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 21/12/2020 23:55

Go to one of the 24 hour supermarkets either before your DH starts work.

justasking111 · 21/12/2020 23:58

Go in the evening when everyone else is tucked up with chocs and wine watching tv. I went to LIDL tonight it was lovely and peaceful, shortage of veg. was the only thing. I will get that tomorrow.

psychomath · 21/12/2020 23:59

Go to the Asda, see what it looks like, and if there's a massive queue go to one of the other shops? FWIW I went to my nearest big Asda (in a city) today at around the time most people would be finishing work and it was fine. Think everyone got the panic buying out of their systems in March - they're probably still tripping over their flour and bog roll mountains Grin
