Dd has been a little sneezy and snotty all day and said this evening her throat hurts. I asked it was a little or a big hurt she said little. She’s eating, drinking, no fever or cough or anything. Seems okay in herself.

I know it’s not one of the 3 main symptoms so doesn’t really warrant a test according to the official info but I’ve read that children often get bad throats with covid.

But also..

DS has a cold last week. Resulted in a cough and covid test - negative.

I got a bad throat and had a reduced sense of smell and taste. I got a test and it was also negative.

Oh got a mild sore throat for about a day. Didn’t feel it warranted a test as he was fine and probably caught it off me.

So the likelihood is that Dd has caught what all had - a cold.

So aibu think for now she doesn’t need a test for now? Not planning to mix with anyone or socialise anyway!

Oh has just informed me that she had picked up a glass he had been drinking from when he had a bad throat and drank out of it herself - so no bleddy wonder she’s caught it.

Obviously if things change we will book a test!

No, keep an eye on it.

DS came home from last day at school sneezing, generally a bit snotty. I got it two days later.

Snotty, sneezy with a very slight sore throat, more like a vaguely achey tonsil but no temperature, no cough, no change to taste or smell.

I tested negative.

olympicsrock · 21/12/2020 20:42

My covid started with a sore throat....

Itsseweasy · 21/12/2020 20:43

No I wouldn’t put her through the test in this scenario, hope she gets better soon ❤️

Rudolph98 · 21/12/2020 20:44

@olympicsrock I get that that’s why I said if things change I’ll book a test... 😄

My son was positive with a sore throat and headache. I think we should be testing a lot more symptoms. (I know, I know it’s impossible to do that)

dingledongle · 21/12/2020 20:45

I would test, children do not show the same symptoms as adults

My dd had covid presented like a cold Sad

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 21/12/2020 20:46

She sounds like she has the same symptoms I had when I had covid. I would get her tested.

MadeForThis · 21/12/2020 20:49

I would test

LutinDeSapin · 21/12/2020 20:53

I would be inwardly cursing but not overly worried. Especially as your other DC has just had a cold. I'd keep her home and away from people and see how she is in a couple of days.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 21/12/2020 20:55

I would not be concerned no. All of mine have just had a cold with sore throat and one ended up having a test as he had a temp and school insisted. Negative. Colds and sore throat go hand in hand don't they.

hammeringinmyhead · 21/12/2020 20:55

Not sure. My DS stopped eating and got chills - no fever though. He saw the emergency GP last night and it's tonsillitis. There are other viruses circulating.

StripyHorse · 21/12/2020 20:58

Lots of children don't have the main symptoms but have a cold like illness instead.

If you are all planning on isolating for 10 days then it is probably safe enough not to get her tested. If any of you want to go out / meet anyobe at all in that time, best to get a test.

Rudolph98 · 21/12/2020 20:59

It’s so hard. As we all know your average winter viruses are also circulating but we have to be cautious of covid.

I can only assume that she’s caught what we all had but I’ll see what she’s like tomorrow!

My kids surprise me sometimes. Sometimes I put them to bed convinced they are coming down with something and they wake up right as rain!

A PP had said they had sore throat with COVID.

One cannot conclude - from this anecdote - that sore throats are a covid symptom.

Some people with covid may get a sore throat.
The vast majority of people with a sore throat so not have covid.

The list of symptoms exist for a reason. They haven’t been plucked out of thin air. Your child doesn’t have testable covid symptoms. Thus you shouldn’t get her tested.

Anecdotes as above demonstrate the logical fallacy of the premise here. Some people with covid also have may have got runny noses, diarrhoea Or a migraine. But that doesn’t make any of these a testworthy symptom.

Minky37 · 21/12/2020 21:03

I wouldn’t test as you’ve all had similar symptoms last week and tested negative. If she develops any of the ‘official’ symptoms I’d test.

AllThatJazzle · 21/12/2020 21:06

Sorry to sound harsh here but WTF? People are talking about testing and maybe isolating based in a sore throat? If people start getting tested when they aren't displaying the 'main' symptoms of covid, then we'll end up with testing issues again (peopme struggling to get a test, results taking ages etc).

I get there is heightened anxiety just now but your child has a sore throat. Follow the guidelines. Nothing to worry about.

Posturesorposes · 21/12/2020 22:01

There is such an enormous logical fallacy that leads from :

Position A: My uncle James had covid and had a runny nose .... to

Conclusion B: You should get covid tests for runny noses.

A massive problem in this sort of reasoning.

WalkingOnStarshine · 21/12/2020 22:55

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at those symptoms. I'd assume it's a cold and carry on.

NellePorter · 21/12/2020 23:00

I can't see any reason to get her tested unless she develops one of the main symptoms. Hope she is better soon.

jgjgjgjgjg · 21/12/2020 23:04

Nope. She doesn't have any of the main symptoms of coronavirus so she isn't entitled to a test on the NHS. If you want her to have one you'll have to pay privately.

Sweettea1 · 21/12/2020 23:23

Nope wouldn't concern me sounds like a cold sneezing and snotting if she gets temp or cough then yes I would rethink an test but you all have had a cold and tested negative so more likely she has cold.

Rudolph98 · 22/12/2020 07:57

Thanks all. She’s woke up very very snotty. Been sneezing non stop for an hour but said her throat is fine now. So hopefully it’ll be short lived! She tends to get over colds quick! Unlike my oldest who had a cold lasting 10 whole days and a hacking lingering cough after it!! (Covid test negative).
