Price of private appointment with NHS oncologist for ovarian cancer?

Posting here for traffic. I wondered if anyone has a ballpark figure for the fee for a private consultation with an oncologist?

This may sound stupid, but is it really a very individual "how long is a piece of string" situation - as in, do leading research doctors charge a lot more?

I have only ever paid privately in the UK for an in-demand dermatologist, no experience of paying for this sort of thing at all, so a bit unsure of what prices to expect.

Also OP, if you're not already then get yourself on to the Ovarian cancer board on health unlocked. I think that it's run by Ovacome those ladies know everything there is to know about ovarian cancer and who to see. So many of them are living well with the condition because they've taken the direction of their treatment into their own hands

I was referred under the 2 week wait recently, and was seen and got the all clear within 10 days.

I remember your previous thread. How does your mum feel about this?

Thank you for remembering my thread. Yes, she wants to be fully aware of any options. She enquired about the possibility of clinical trials herself, at one of her meetings. She is game to consider whatever might help.

I feel like it's my job to make sure she has access to all relevant information for her to make her decisions about everything.

I managed to get here ok, somehow managed to get over the hurdles with visa travel authorisation and travelling in covid times etc Smile

Now quarantining and hoping and praying for a negative test so I can actually see my mum.

Most oncologists who work privately will also have an NHS practice. However, she's looking for one who does internal chemotherapy. My understanding is that this procedure is mainly done in one particular hospital and can be very effective. She needs to speak to a doctor with experience of it who has done it who can give an opinion on whether he mother is a suitable candidate, not from the local doctor who has heard about it but never performed it so can't actually make that judgement.

Yes this is basically what I think, and @Atrixie I completely agree with you about advocacy.

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband Flowers but so glad for you that you got more time than he was told in the initial diagnosis.

Cancer is just fucking shite.

It's essential she calls her insurer first, appointments are very swift but not all plans cover all doctors.

I'm having HIPEC (with cytoreductive surgery) for cancer. I'm NHS.

My opinion is that patients seem to have an easier time navigating services within the NHS. A friend is going through the same diagnosis as me (but with private care) and now that she needs HIPEC, shes struggling to get her private oncology team to talk to the NHS team that offer it.

As far as I know, there are only 2 hospitals in England that offer the treatment, Christie's in Manchester and basingstoke. Your mom can ask for a referral to either of these for a 2nd opinion.

Happy to talk further if you want to message me.

DH is getting private cancer treatment at the moment and his private cover specifically does not cover treatment that is deemed a clinical trial.

@Toddlerteaplease

She needs a doctor that has treated 100 people with her type of cancer. Not one that's only treated 10. Probably more likely to find that on the NHS.
Sorry but I have worked in the NHS and this is utter bullshit. You don’t become a consultant oncologist from treating 10 fcking people- are you insane? At that level you would have treated thousands of patients with cancer- hence the title “consultant”. Also- you do realise that consultants usually split their time between nhs work and top it up with private work? So it’s likely you’d see the same consultant both privately or nhs but the waiting time for private would be much less - which I don’t deny is very crucial
