Never Ending Period - Nobody Cares

IsABit2020 · 21/12/2020 11:30

I've been on my period since mid November. It keeps stopping and starting but showing no signs of slowing.

I spoke to my GP today who just put it down to the contraceptive implant. But I've had it in for just over 3 years and it's never caused this issue before. I have been taking the mini pill as well because the implant has expired and they can't replace it at the moment due to Covid. They haven't suggested anything else other to call again in 3 weeks if still ongoing.

Is there anything I can do to stop it? And does it sound like it could be an implant issue?

I assume it couldnt be an STI? New partner? Changes in other meds? I know how frustrating this can be. Completely different scenario, but I bled for 3mths straight after a misccarriage and it was just awful.

Have you tried a family planning clinic? I dont know what is open, but our area have one specifically for contraceptive issues like this. They have nurse practitioners, along with gynecologists who might be able to remove the implant and/or give you tranexamic acid. Is the bleeding really heavy/clots?

If nothing else, keep a diary of how heavy it is, how often you needed to change tampons/pads so you have some record to show them when you do finally see someone. Best of luck x

IsABit2020 · 21/12/2020 11:41

Yes very heavy. Then it stops for a few days turns into brown discharge and starts again. It is actually very distressing. I live quite rurally so I don't think there is that kind of service here. I will check though.

No new partner. No chance it could be STI. I have had a cervical ectropion in the past so don't know if that could be causing issues. I can't get a GP to actually examine me it is all being done over the phone and they insist it is an implant issue.

I had my coil replaced at a sexual health clinic. GP was not doing them.

If you are rural, it might be a journey away but then I guess most things are. But there will be one somewhere in your district.

Also the staff in them are usually very nice. They try and encourage people to attend rather than deter them like GP receptionists sometimes seem to do

Superstardjs · 21/12/2020 11:50

I have this problem, I tried norethisterone and mefanamic and tranexamic acid.

StillCounting123 · 21/12/2020 11:52

I've had something similar for 4 years.

Been to GP, for internal scans, to Consultant Gynae. Mine was put down to ovarian cysts (at one point they did CA125 blood test to rule out cancer). Also, I have a cervical erosion which is some sort of irritation of the cervix.

What age are you, OP? Do you have DC? The gynaecologist told me that in mid-late 30s these things can happen as the hormones are all over the place and body is craving to be pregnant while it's still possible Xmas Shock Not sure if that is always true, but I guess it does make some sort of sense!

I bleeds for around 2.5/3 weeks every month. Sad

IsABit2020 · 21/12/2020 11:52

@Superstardjs did they work? And was it an implant issue that caused your problem? Thank you.

IsABit2020 · 21/12/2020 11:54

I am 28. I have 2 DC. Very worried about cancer mostly because I can't get anyone to examine me. I had CIN 2 a few years ago and had treatment for that.

The implant caused this for me straight away but for my friend it happened after years. The implant was my first thought before seeing you have one. Is it possible to get it out?

doctorhamster · 21/12/2020 11:56

How long have you been taking the pill? I would come off it and see if that helps. I had dreadful bleeding on cerazette.

Superstardjs · 21/12/2020 11:56

It wasn't an implant issue for me, i was not on any contraception. The norethisterone did work somewhat, reducing it rather than stopping it, although that isn't a long term solution. I found the tranexamic acid made me throw up, no idea why, so stopped that v quickly.

BeenHereForAges · 21/12/2020 11:58

OP have you done a pregnancy test? I had this a few years ago and it was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy that I had no idea about. Mine went on for weeks too before it was picked up. I hope you're ok and can get to the bottom of this.

Gonkytonk · 21/12/2020 11:59

How long have you been in the mini pill?
I bled for first 6 weeks when I started it.

MitziK · 21/12/2020 12:00

I switched brands of mini pill when I had bleeding for three months after starting it - and it stopped immediately. Might be worth a try?

Smudge18 · 21/12/2020 12:00

I totally agree with this. I started the mini pill three months ago and was bleeding like you described. I stopped taking it at the beginning of last week because I'd had enough and wanted to see if it made a difference. The bleeding stopped within two days.
IsABit2020 · 21/12/2020 12:01

I have been taking pill since July with no issues until November. I'm not pregnant. @BeenHereForAges that sounds awful I hope you are OK now.

It might be the implant I had same issue in the last year of implant so had it taken out after 2 an half year instead of 3 couldn't put up with the periods any longer. Is there no way at all of getting it taken out.

Goinghome20 · 21/12/2020 12:29

Are you sure the implant isn't releasing hormones at all?

If it is and you're also taking mini pill it could be too much which is causing the bleed.

Make sure you're taking extra iron, you do not want anaemia.

Look for your local womens health clinic, usually in hospital. They should be able to help you.

Which implant is it?

RandomMess · 21/12/2020 13:54

My DD has never had the implant last as long as it should to control her periods and endometriosis, each one lasts shorter than the previous one.

They should be taking it more seriously though Angry

HopeAndDriftWood · 21/12/2020 13:58

I’m with @Goinghome20 - the mini pill could be too much if the implant is still releasing hormones. I’ve never had the implant but my friend had the same issue when she was given the pill (I’m not sure which one) with the implant in April - the doctors weren’t removing implants due to Corona, so they gave her the pill to tide her over, and she had a three month period. She stopped the pill and it stopped the bleeding after a week or so, although it did mean she had to use condoms as there was no way of knowing if she was protected from pregnancy.

I’ve had two incidents of long bleeding in my life, not this year, and to be honest I’ve never found doctors to be very concerned unless it goes on for over three months constantly or it’s causing other issues. It sucks, but I think it’s very much treated as “one of those things” until that point.

galison · 21/12/2020 14:49

It could be all sorts of things. I had a 9 month non stop period twenty odd years ago (I was on the pill). Turned out I had fibroids and being only 30 I was young to get them so it wasn't obvious. The bleeding just worse and worse and I did have to be really persistent to get surgery. I was brushed off and was supposed to just put up with it because I was too young for a hysterectomy and the consultant wouldn't consider any other options. Research had told me different. About 8 years later they came back and I had to have surgery again. By that stage I had given up using the pill due to breakthrough bleeding not controlled by changing pills and I had the pain of the endo.

If you still have it in three weeks then make sure he lets you come in to be examined. It could well be your implant but other reasons should be ruled out.

Holothane · 21/12/2020 15:04

Hugs from me I do care I bled three months solid after coil put in, spent the next 6 months bleeding and in agony, you need to start asking for scans I do feel your pain.

OrigamiOwl · 22/12/2020 12:41

I had this problem on the implant.

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 22/12/2020 23:49

I had the same issue. My GP laughed in my face, thought it was hilarious I was flooding at work. Anyway I demanded to be referred, turned out I had fibroids, one small one was causing most of the issues. I had surgery to get them out, got the Mirena and never looked back. Keep pushing OP for a resolution.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 22/12/2020 23:52

I had an awful time on the implant. Spotting and bleeding 3 out of 4 weeks. It is a different type from the one l had years ago. I had it removed early.
