To say the Turkey is the least important part of Christmas lunch?

There must be others like us around. I'm hoping some are MNers!

Really the Turkey is just a formality.

I may in fact do a roast chicken. Or buy Turkey slices.

Christmas dinner is about all off the other sides. The main Christmas meat is actually the pigs in blankets and stuffing.

I enjoy the turkey, especially the dark meat.
But get a chicken if it suits you better. But reheated turkey slices? Bleugh. Very school dinner.

MillieEpple · 21/12/2020 07:34

I agree. Its all the other bits

BrandyandDeath · 21/12/2020 07:35

Chicken is far better in every way. Go for it, OP.

Meruem · 21/12/2020 07:35

We all hate turkey. I always do chicken and lamb. Much nicer.

Whattimeisdinner · 21/12/2020 07:37

Definitely OP!

MotherExtraordinaire · 21/12/2020 07:38

@LastChristmas20i agree. But if you have not bought it now you may end up with fish fingers!!! 😂

FangsForTheMemory · 21/12/2020 07:38

I’m having beef.

Aprilx · 21/12/2020 07:40

I am doing a Turkey for the first time in years, I normally do a goose or duck. But generally, I prefer everything else on the plate to the meat.

AuntieMarys · 21/12/2020 07:42

I don't like turkey, pigs in blankets or roast potatoes. Bring on the cheese!

LastChristmas20 · 21/12/2020 07:43

Haha.

Well I already have the pigs. So that's no concern.

Honestly we wouldn't be upset to have no bird meat. As long as there's pigs, Yorkshire's, stuffing and veg (must include cauliflower cheese and red cabbage with apple) then we'll be happy!

Mouthfulofquiz · 21/12/2020 07:44

I don’t agree - I absolutely love turkey!!

wildraisins · 21/12/2020 07:52

I love turkey - as long as it's cooked well and not tough/ dry. Can take or leave the pigs in blankets tbh!

Mommabear20 · 21/12/2020 07:55

Turkey, pigs in blankets, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, gravy, Yorkshire puddings and sage and onion stuffing 🤤🤤 sod the veg!

Ah when I say veg I don't mean the same everyday veg.

Cauliflower cheese. Red cabbage with apple. Sprouts with bacon.

These are the Christmas veg.

Although I do adore roast parsnips!!

Squirrelblanket · 21/12/2020 07:58

I don't think any of the elements of Christmas dinner are important on their own, it's about when they are combined that the meal is special. Xmas Grin

CupoTeap · 21/12/2020 08:03

There were loads of turkeys in the supermarket yesterday!

yearinyearout · 21/12/2020 08:08

Yes, I agree. I don't mind it, but far more important are the gravy, pigs in blankets and crispy roast potatoes.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 08:26

I agree, and in fact we have never had turkey. Mum never wanted leftovers for days and days and I am grateful that was her view. A small chicken and just leftovers on Boxing Day.

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/12/2020 08:33

I love the vegetables, we do red cabbage, sprouts with chestnuts, creamed swede, carrots and roast potatoes. A couple of pigs in blankets would probably be enough.

Purplewithred · 21/12/2020 08:35

Hate turkey - tastes of nothing. Beef or goose for us, but I’d make do with pigs in blankets and stuffing on their own.

Must buy a red cabbage today!

IggyAce · 21/12/2020 08:38

We never have turkey, it’s usually roast beef. Pigs in blankets are the most important part to us, my dh brought ours late October early November & froze them just in case there were shortages.

MrsMiaWallis · 21/12/2020 08:42

I'm a massive foodie and I agree OP. I buy a frozen turkey from Lidl every year and we have it on Boxing Day or the 27th, the fact its frozen and a bit tasteless makes no difference whatsoever, all the bits make it. A chicken would probably be nicer. The only reason I do q turkey at all is for the leftovers- we love turkey curry and turkey sandwiches.

WhatDoHedgehogsSay · 21/12/2020 08:45

A turkey is good if you cook it so it’s not dry. Phil Vickery does a great recipe for not dry turkey.

We had a goose last year it was delicious! We’ve had duck and ham previous years.

But you’re right it’s all about the other bits. My favourite parts are the pigs in blankets, red cabbage, roast potatoes, stuffings and the Yorkshire’s.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 21/12/2020 10:03

I agree but 4 year old DS insists we have it, so we now have a large turkey crown and only the 3 of us for Xmas. Going to be eating leftovers for months

DarceyDashwood · 21/12/2020 10:07

Stuffing balls and pigs in blankets are the beat bit. Even when I used to go my mums for Xmas dinner I’d make these just to have by themselves on Boxing Day 😂
