Why don't we have a coalition government now?

During the war, as in fighting an enemy, we had a coalition government. I understood this as getting the best brains around the table to fight the nazis, without the political point scoring. Now that covid has apparently killed more than those killed in the blitz, why not? I'm not pro any political party, yeah I voted Tory last time around, sorry. But Corbyn and the a liberal schoolmarm sort Jo whatsername were non starters, and I vote pd because my mum said I have to because women died for my right to vote.

I actually don’t know what to say.

Christ 🙈 where to begin...

Brighterthansunflowers · 20/12/2020 21:19

As if the idiots you helped to elect would ever give up any of his power. Even if they paid lip service to it, their record on negotiations isn’t exactly great is it?

If you wanted a different government you shouldn’t have voted Tort

Brighterthansunflowers · 20/12/2020 21:19

Tory not tort, obviously

CarrieBlue · 20/12/2020 21:21

You could always have spoilt your ballot paper if exercising your right to vote was so important to you.

Cottipus · 20/12/2020 21:22

The Conservatives got a stonking majority because Labour had an unelectable, indecisive leader. At the time the biggest challenge the country faced was Brexit; now overshadowed by a global pandemic.

Because they have a huge majority in parliament there is no reason whatsoever for them to call an early election. Doing so would lose them seats.

CoRhona · 20/12/2020 21:23

Yes and the last coalition was a roaring success Hmm

Noseyoldcow · 20/12/2020 21:26

I voted Tory because I thought they were the best bet. Spoiling a ballot paper counts as not voting. And actually, back then, I really did think then they really were the best bet. As in they were going to get brexit done which the admittedly slim majority voted for. I'm not going in to what I voted for there, but the democratic decision was out and I accept that.

Nice to hear you are an adult with independent views.

Ericcanatnah1 · 20/12/2020 21:32

The current government got a landslide victory last time so it won’t be hard for them to govern without the oppositions support

Ohalrightthen · 20/12/2020 21:35

We don't have a coalition because a bunch of morons voted Tory, and they won a huge majority.

Noseyoldcow · 20/12/2020 21:36

And I really think we are in a war against this covid bollocks, vaccinations notwithstanding. I'm sick of political pointscoring. Boris and his government have not done well. But then neither has the rest of Europe. He won the last election because there was no viable alternative, was there.....But the other parties have been getting their shit together. What I'm saying is that I want party politics put aside for now, let's get through this catastrophe together.

It’s worth pointing out the Labour Party have been very supportive of most of the governments measures with the exception of Andy burnham

When was that invoked?

Meredithgrey1 · 20/12/2020 21:41

No, whatever party you support you should accept that an opposition is such a vital part of democracy.
You need people on the other side asking “why have you done this, what haven’t you done that, what about this, have you considered that etc” and holding people to account. It’s so important. I would say the same whoever was in power and whatever the crisis was.
If it was a coalition there would still be point scoring because people would still want credit for the good ideas. And you get the added bonus of less accountability because everyone would blame the other side for any fuck ups.

Sorry I'm a first time poster, dunno how to link to your post...
Anyway....I vote because my mum said I should and pointed out that women died for my right to do so. And she was right. And I assess my choice very carefully before I exercise that right to vote. What she meant of course was that I, unlike women before me, have a "voice", and that I should consider and use it.
