Am I able to get back to the UK? Posting for traffic

Hi,

posting for traffic on AIBU.

I'm abroad in Germany at the moment with my 4 month old visiting family.

I'm due to fly back on Tuesday.

We've just read the announcement that Germany and other EU countries will ban all flights from the UK from midnight due to this new coronavirus variant.

Different news outlets report different things, some say it's only flights from the UK that are banned and others say that it's also flights to the UK.

I can't get through to Lufthansa - does anyone have more information about this?

Thanks x

Maybe OP, who has a new baby, wanted to see her family?

OP, I would try to stay longer with your people if I were you. I live abroad and miss my mum but wouldn't even attempt getting to the UK now.

foodster · 20/12/2020 20:47

I wanted to introduce my baby to family, the flight was only 1 hour and 30 minutes. So not

@partyatthepalace

There will be repatriation flights. If you can’t get any joy out of airline contact the embassy. Good luck.
The repatriation mentioned in a link above, referred to EU planes and their crew. Because EU airlines can't afford to have their assets out of use and stranded in UK. Brits who can't fly back to UK will need to make the journey home some other way; by train or ferry (if those are running). OP might then find it difficult to travel in UK (between their entry point and their uk destination) with a baby.

So not unreasonable to travel, but of course there's always random people b*ching on mumsnet.

Apparently the new strain is on mainlamd already so I would watch for other shut fowns in air travel as well

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/12/2020 20:51

foodster don't let people who aren't going to be helpful wind you up. Recriminations and regrets won't help at all.
I expect things will become clearer in the morning.

I really want to hug my 93 yo Nan with esophageal cancer right now too. Alas, here I sit over 3000 miles away while my elderly mom tries to take care of her. It would be extremely selfish to put those wants over the world's needs

Hope you get back easily and safely foodster

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 20/12/2020 20:55

At the moment its for 24 hours from/to Brussels but guessing that might change?

MargosKaftan · 20/12/2020 20:58

FFS some people on here are so horrible. She's there now, she broke no laws, obviously had a baby in this shitty pandemic and wanted to see her family.

OP - contact the embassy. Can you drive? Is a hire car to France and the ferrys an option if you have to do it? (This is assuming you want to be home for Christmas)

(Or Germany to Ireland, Ireland to UK might be an option.)

Good luck.

Walkaround · 20/12/2020 21:02

@Leaannb - what is your son moving to the UK for in the middle of a global pandemic? Should he not also be staying put in your hotspot?

Covidnomore · 20/12/2020 21:03

OP please don't drive if its just you an baby.

Its too far and situation is changing too quickly.

Stay in Germany and get home when you can fly into the UK. You have family there. You will be looked after.

Trying long convoluted ways of getting home is just too risky and you have a baby.

Bridecilla · 20/12/2020 21:04

I'd say you're stuck there for a while. Will your family put you up? My brother is stuck in Norway - no chance of getting home. He works there but his work has dried up and he was planning on coming home for 6 months on the 23rd. It's really shit

oblada · 20/12/2020 21:06

"Leaannb
France has stopped all travel to/from UK tonight at midnight for the next 48 hours"

Not quite. France has stopped travel from the UK. Not to the UK.
As for your moral rant - I doubt the OP cares about your view really. In her shoes I'd have travelled too. And if I'm able to see my family over Xmas then I will.

Justiceisblind · 20/12/2020 21:09

“I'm a dual citizen of the US and UK. I own lots of property in the UK. My Mom,Nan,Son and DiL all live in the UK. Another son is moving there in a week. My permanent home is smack dab in the middle of a huge hotspot. We marked 7000 new cases yesterday. How would you feel if I used my desperation to see my family, help my kid move, check on financial investments to go over?“

:) :) :)
Wind-up surely!
Off to look up guidance for you OP

vanillandhoney · 20/12/2020 21:09

You may be lucky and be able to fly back to the UK. I suppose it will very much be dependent on individual operators though.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 20/12/2020 21:14

@foodster could you stay put in Germany for a bit? You're probably safer there tbh.

notimagain · 20/12/2020 21:14

France has stopped travel from the UK. Not to the UK.

Agreed..ATM it looks like that for example, Eurotunnel northbound is still planning on taking passengers France > UK....

Not sure what the ferries are doing.

It's a complete ban on anybody entering France from the UK by air so I suspect their won't be many if any services due to the "empty legs" issue.

DianaT1969 · 20/12/2020 21:17

Once you speak to Lufthansa, try getting a flight tomorrow OP while planes are still turning around. Be packed and ready.
At least you have family if you get stuck there.
I too doubt there will be any government organised flights. They have been clear about discouraging overseas travel to essential and essential business. I don't think they'll feel they have a duty to organise it and will tell people to stay put and contact their insurance. That's my guess.

Justiceisblind · 20/12/2020 21:19

“Aus” is out of
“Nach” is to.
So the ban is on flights out of UK to Germany.
So the German gov has no objection to you leaving.
Which airline is it?
