Child wanting me to watch everything - driving me insane!!

MisterMakerMakes · 19/12/2020 20:15

DC is 7 and is currently sat next to me asking me to watch video after video. They will sit watching my face to make sure I'm watching and it's driving me insane, I'm going to scream. BlushHmm

I have tried to tell them politely that I have already watched the 5 previous videos they wanted me to watch but now have to get on with my own things but they just don't stop!

Just had a flashback of me at 12 watching vhs' of the Wildhearts and me saying to my mother, 'Danny does the bass intro here' and her shouting, 'get that dozy lot off my telly!'
I don't think that'll work somehow. It didn't stop me. Haha.

On a serious note, yes it is tiresome. We've had strictly on repeat for a month. It'll pass.

Respectabitch · 20/12/2020 14:03

Gérard Butler himself could be helicoptering his knob in front of me and I would still get bored after the 8th consecutive "look at this" while he does it again

...that is... Quite the mental image though.

I agree with PP; just set a limit and stick to it. They'll live.

Also also seconding the stupid "enjoy every second" guilt trippy bollocks. My nanny adores my kids, but she once watched my two year old follow me around all "Mummy mummy mummy" and asked "...are they like that with you all weekend?!" YEP.

MustardMitt · 20/12/2020 14:11

Sometimes kids hear no. It’s not a bad thing to get him used to the fact that you have your own interests.

arethereanyleftatall · 20/12/2020 14:16

On day 1 of this, I patiently watched, then said to dd, 'dd dd read this thread I'm reading on mumsnet' she started reading it, instantly bored. 'No come on dd, it's really funny, read it' 'I don't want to' 'exactly. If I wanted to see the videos you watch I'd search them myself'
Never came up again.

This made me laugh so much, I used to force my mum to watch Wildhearts videos and would say stuff like “this is the one where Ginger says the C word” and “watch this bit .,, Danny looks so cute” and “ohh keep watching ... this bit is really funny!” 😂

She hated them but she preferred them to the Alice In Chains videos. They apparently made her feel sick 😂

Daphnise · 20/12/2020 14:25

One day you may regret you didn't do more "Watching with me".

Now sing Baby Shark for the 5,093rd time- and let your face show enjoyment or we'll go back to the beginning......And with actions or it doesn't count.

CottonSock · 20/12/2020 14:27

Try and put on stuff you like. We are watching beauty and the beast now, it's pretty good. Harry potter etc

arethereanyleftatall · 20/12/2020 14:32

I always assume people who write the quotes like 'listen to the small things, or they won't tell you the big things' have either never had children, or have forgotten.,
I remember once dd telling me her dream. She was about 5. I had nothing to do that morning so thought I'd give listening a whirl. ONE HOUR AND A QUARTER later she was still describing the dream.
Since that day, I dismiss all inspiration quotes like the above as nonsense.

Superstardjs · 20/12/2020 14:33

@foreverandalways

I am a grandmother and have been unable to see my 9 yr old grandson since April...heartbroken...I would give anything to sit and watch movies with him right now...cherish every second x
That is because you don't have to do it all day every day. It is fucking boring and not a memory I look back on fondly from dd's younger years. I had no problem saying no to mine, but if she was particularly persistent I would insist we alternate choices. So I'd suffer a shit 10 mins of roblox and in return, I'd find wood carving by Peruvian craftsmen or some such. It did tend to cut my involvement short.
SimonJT · 20/12/2020 14:34

Until recently I watched all of my sons TV shows with him, I thought thats just what you did, so when he had his half hour of TV time I would join in.

I thought this was normal until a friend who is a parent asked what the fuck I was doing. So yeah, I didn’t need to waste hours of my life watching babybum.

Telly time is now a dream, he watche TV for half an hour and completely ignores me, bliss.

Laiste · 20/12/2020 14:37

LOL yes, DD (6) as well.
Anyone who feels we should treasure this time - all in the space of apx 10 mins this morning:

Look mummy - a video of a cartoon kitten with glittery paws
Look mummy - a video of a cartoon doll with long hair
Look mummy - i'm putting my legs in the air
Look mummy - i'm standing on the train track ...
Look mummy - i can shut one eye
Look mummy - i've won the golden frog
Look mummy
Look mummy
Look mummy
Mummy look
Look

Sit down. Set a limit. 3 videos or 3 minutes. Really give your attention. Then a 'That was great, show me some more tomorrow.' kiss kiss

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/12/2020 14:39

Hearing no every now and then will not scar a child, it’s character forming. Why feel bad for saying you don’t want to do something mundane or you’re busy, you haven’t killed their kitten? You could suggest taking turns, he picks one video and you the next, he’ll be saying no to you quick enough.

Laiste · 20/12/2020 14:44

CeeceeBloomingdale

You're right. A no doesn't make the sky doesn't fall in.
Yesterday she was keeping on about me watching this video of a puppy. The same one over and over.
I watched once or twice and then said no in the end.
Whyyyyyyyy though mummy?
Because I'M NOT 6!!

It was a revelation! She was like ''ohhhh''.

This morning I was treated to a solid hour of Sims-based narration. Which was even grimmer than you'd expect, since she never got past the create-a-sim screen, so what I actually got was an hour of twittering about clothing and hairstyle choices. Why she thinks my opinion will be of any use, given my complete lack of fashion sense, I do not know.

I did find a good way of getting out of having to watch Pokemon clips though - apparently psychoanalysing Pikachu out loud is very offputting! Grin

Tumblebugsjump · 20/12/2020 15:08

@SimonJT thanks for this, it made me laugh so much... that moment when someone presents you with the new normal, so liberating 😆

StormyInTheNorth · 20/12/2020 16:37

@CardoMondo Danny still looks cute IMO. Heaven knows how he is still alive, let alone cute. My mother preferred Ramones, and oddly, Roses in the hospital. Song not video!

Cherrysoup · 20/12/2020 16:49

Just say no, I’m doing something else and mean it. There’s no need to feel guilty. I cannot bear the whole ‘watch this’ when it’s usually something I’m not interested in. You don’t make them watch stuff you’re into and they need to learn that people have different interests and that this is normal and fine.

MitziK · 20/12/2020 16:58

@thistimelastweek

Could be worse. Could be a show they've created, directed and acted in person.
Kids next door did that to us over the (eight foot for good reason) fence on the one day we sat out in the garden. Apart from when Spiderman turned out to be secretly in love with Woody from Toy Story and had a baby Stich that they threw away for being naughty, at which point Princess Tia came along and slapped the pair of them upside the head for not looking after him properly (in a great impersonation of their Mum's accent and voice), we were just praying for their Mum to call them in for tea, as I think Game of Thrones probably finished sooner and had fewer problematic scenes .

I think Mum had probably seen every other episode in the season, which was why she left them out there whilst we suffered smiled and clapped.

God.

DP's 43. I still get a fucking variation of that now.

And he knows that if he EVER tries to tell me about how Mick Ronson played the solo on Headfuck after CJ again, I will definitely put him six feet underground.

Never mind the number of ca-ca-ca-cas on Caffeine Bomb. I FUCKING KNOW. I KNOW THEY TRIED TO GET AWAY WITH I'M SITTING IN BROWN WATER. I KNOW. I've been to the Birthday Bashes and talked guitar speak with CJ and told Willie Dowling he's not having my last smoke. I'VE BEEN THERE.

StormyInTheNorth · 20/12/2020 17:37

Haha! @MitziK it's an addictive hobby is rock n roll.

Wallywobbles · 20/12/2020 17:55

These posts have totally thrown me. Why do none of you tell the kids that it bores you and that if they want you to stay with them at the very least it needs to something that doesn't bore you. Compromise should be learnt as toddlers. You have no obligation to sit through boring shite. And if you've had to sit through it once that's it, never again.

JingleFails · 20/12/2020 18:13

I am completely Confused at this.
Your child sits and watches you to make sure that you are watching something you dont want to watch?
Just get up and say you are going to do something else .
Do you really never say no to your children?

JingleFails · 20/12/2020 18:14

Ps Yes Ive watched family films on many occasions .
Surely they can watch tv on their own?

MustardMitt · 20/12/2020 19:27

See, if I’ve been subjected to multiple minecraft/Fortnite/unboxing videos I then make them watch a Sims one with me Grin
