Gift arrived without gift box

CoRhona · 19/12/2020 12:10

As we are not seeing any family this year over Christmas, I have sent gifts instead.

I ordered a bottle of champagne in its gift box for my very lovely MIL who lives a few hours' drive away from us. I also ordered alcohol for FIL and BIL, both also gift boxed.

MIL's has arrived in a cheap bottle bag instead.

AIBU to ask for a refund?

And if so, how much is reasonable? I'm disappointed it didn't arrive as advertised (photo and listing description and headline all showed it gift boxed). Can't return it as she lives miles away...

If you were to buy the champagne in store it’s the exact same price in its box or without, so I’m not sure what you would be seeking refund for.

It’s therefore not a “gift box” shown in picture above. That’s just the bottle box. They’ve not advertised incorrectly by not sending the bottle box.

You could try and argue a gift bag is not a gift box but is it really worth your time when she’s already received it, and it’s just something that goes in the bin anyway?

@MissBaskinIfYoureNasty

Yabu to expect a refund AND not to return it Confused
OP should be refunded for the non existent gift box though

Even though the box is free? That would be a refund of £0.00 then.

@AldiAisleofCrap

Was it pictured like this op, if so I wouldn’t have expected the box.
I would absolutely expect the box if that was how it was pictured!
HopeAndDriftWood · 19/12/2020 14:00

Where did you order it from?

Jessbow · 19/12/2020 14:00

where was it actually ordered from? what site?

AliceinBunniland · 19/12/2020 14:03

YANBU OP

If the bottle was shown with a box then that's what you paid for and it's not unreasonable to ask for a bit of a refund

Buying that particular item was partly down to the box and packaging snd I don't think it's ok for the seller to just change this

Not sure what covid has to do with it

toastofthetown · 19/12/2020 14:23

Assuming the listing was something like this then I absolutely would expect the gift box to be included. Why wouldn't I when it's in the title, picture and the description? I can't imagine they would give a full refund though. Maybe a £5/£10 goodwill voucher, but I would contact the company anyway to alert them.

CommanderBurnham · 19/12/2020 14:38

It's a blatant case of goods not arriving as advertised.
Email them and tell them to sort it. Put it on Twitter.

CoRhona · 19/12/2020 15:10

@toastofthetown that is almost exactly what it was like (words just in a slightly different order).

So, in the meantime, I went back to the company (marketplace seller via Amazon).

Seller said to return for full refund, I pointed out it had been sent elsewhere so I couldn't do that. Amazon has now emailed them.

I'm really surprised by people who think this is ok. If I'd ordered a necklace in a gift box and it came in a little bag, surely that wouldn't be ok?

But you would keep a necklace in the box to stop it getting tangled. The alcohol will taste the same, and won’t spoil, for lack of a free cardboard box that would end up in the recycling. Get MIL to send it back if you want a refund.

Aprilx · 19/12/2020 15:22

You may keep a necklace in the box it comes in. You are not going to keep the box the wine came in, I cannot imagine making a fuss about something that will be in the bin the next day.

MrsClatterbuck · 19/12/2020 15:23

Maybe they ran out of the bottles that came in their own box so improvised and put a bottle in a gift bag.

Changethetoner · 19/12/2020 15:29

If it's a nice box, you can use it for storing things in. Some people re-purpose things rather than immediately re-cycling them. She should get compensation for not getting the box she was expecting.

CoRhona · 19/12/2020 15:56

@MrsClatterbuck agree that's probably exactly what happened.

The poster who showed a picture had the bottle at £23. I paid £40 so even allowing an amount for postage, I definitely paid more - which was fine - for it to be presented nicely.

You paid more because you didn’t shop around. The cardboard box comes free with the bottle.

The Tesco one is on offer for £23 www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/255245636

ChippyChickenChips · 19/12/2020 16:29

I'd be a bit disappointed but it'd be forgotten in five minutes.

Orf1abc · 19/12/2020 17:14

I'd be more annoyed at myself for paying £40 for a bottle of Lanson!

CommanderBurnham · 19/12/2020 18:22

Buy the Tesco one and return it

CommanderBurnham · 19/12/2020 18:22

Without the box.
