AIBU to give staff scratch cards for Christmas?

Just a quick question to be honest.

I was going to give all the staff I work with a Christmas card with a scratch card inside it for Christmas. However, there are a few ladies who are ( I think ) Asian, one of which always wears a head scarf. I don’t really know them well and I’m unsure what religion they are. I don’t want to treat them differently but also don’t want to insult them. I’ve had a quick google and some religious really don’t allow gambling so I’m worried I might upset someone if I do this.

I hadn’t even considered this until after I had bought the cards and now don’t know what to do!

Yabu - it is an inappropriate gift
Yanbu- it’s a nice gesture and should do it.

I think it has the potential to offend. I know loads of Christians who wouldn't dream of playing a scratchcard and I'd imagine that other religions might have similar feelings.

I think the idea is nice but it's too much of a minefield.

Just give the Christmas card. No scratch cards as some people could take offence at them.

I've nothing against scratch cards personally, but I don't buy them as they simply seem mindless to me. To some other people they do seem very addictive and they buy loads of them.

I'd find it rather odd if someone sent me a scratch card in a Christmas card. I'd scratch it out of curiosity though. Grin

I personally wouldn't like that and I'm not religious, as I think gambling is a really negative industry.

I'm a Muslim and wouldn't use it. Better to donate to charity. You can even leave out the card but I'm I to zero waste and plastic free as much as possible for the past few years.
She most likely won't even be upset you gave her nothing. But you could even say I've donated X amount in your name on a home made card by your little one/child.

It’s a lovely idea OP if anyone is offended they can recycle it.

inquietant · 19/12/2020 05:00

I think the op was hoping not to offend people, rather than just not give a shit if she does offend people.

I always think giving scratch cards to a group of people is a bad idea anyway. How will they all feel if most of them win nothing but one of them wins the top prize? It could unwittingly lead to resentment within the team. Best not OP.

Pippa12 · 19/12/2020 06:53

I think this is a nice gesture and have gratefully received similar myself. I hope they buy you a drink if they win Wink

AgentJohnson · 19/12/2020 06:55

Scratch cards as gifts is a crappy idea, most won’t win anything. I’m not religious but I would not be impressed by one in a Christmas card.

How do you not know if they are Asian? I wouldn't, too much potential to offend.

FippertyGibbett · 19/12/2020 06:56

No.
I’m not religious but I’d be annoyed as I think they’re a waste of money and I hate gambling.

MinesAPintOfTea · 19/12/2020 06:59

If you are all in one place, chocolates or mince pies between the team (plated one each on these times) would be a safer bet
