Working hours

Just curious really. What are your actual working hours vs your contractual hours? If the actual is higher, what affect does this have on your family life and is it unreasonable on the part of your employer to expect the longer hours?

I would only work over my hours in rare, exceptional circumstances. I don’t think it’s healthy to work consistently over your hours with no reward. There are some jobs where people just starting out may need to “prove” themselves by going the extra mile, but it shouldn’t be a long term expectation.

I feel the same, if you can't get your work done in the time needed there is an issue.

Either with resource or you may need more trainnng. Not suggesting you do just stating if someone has to regularly work over, what's the reason.

I will on occasion if it's needed or if I just want to get something finished or if I feel like it I quite enjoy my role. It's swings and roundabouts as they are great with me if I need to have an hour away from my screen for whatever reason.

Quite a lot of jobs don't have set hours though, you are paid to 'get the work done'.

Many professional jobs dont have hours.

I'm a professional and my contract is for 24 hours a week.
If I do more I book them as TOIL, and take them off in quieter periods.
They get my all in working hours, and make money from my skills & time. I'm not giving extra for free.

I've always worked jobs with set hours, so any overtime has been paid overtime. I would never work over my hours for free - I think it's a really shit work culture that encourages that kind of thing.

Now I'm self-employed so all my time is paid. I run my own dog walking business and while I don't technically charge for things like travel time, it's all built into my hourly rates.
