Curious to know how many people do this. I thought it was pretty common but today when i gave them the xmas tip, they seemed pretty surprised so made me think its not as common as i think?

I am elderly and it was always A Thing to give the bin men a little something at Christmas - my mother and my grandmother did it. I think the difference is that a solicitor ( or similar ) is in a warm cosy office an can let you know their charges. Now I know that others will be out at the crack of dawn , cold , but it has been a tradition in our family to give the bin men ( refuse collectors ) something. Ours are great

Bookworming · 19/12/2020 19:11

Absolutely not. Theyre rude, bad mannered & generally miserable.

Mine are wonderful, always tip them!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 19/12/2020 19:16

Yeah we tip them every year. And the milk man. Not the paper boy though as we don't get one of those 😂

Both we don't tip the doctor or lawyer because we don't use them very often and they are already handsomely rewarded and generally recognised for their work.

I also, despite working from home, do not know my postman but ironically he has posted me a Christmas card today with his name in it. I get 1 letter a week if I am lucky, my neighbours get 50 a day plus all signed for stuff. Hope they do actually give him something. Then again, they are such entitled people they would never consider it,

Goodness me! You're able to count your neighbours letters, that's AMAZING!

To be fair, binmen are pretty well paid, considering you don't exactly need a lot of training or qualifications to do the job.

Yeah right on @BackforGood ! They're earning loads!

HmmSureJan · 20/12/2020 16:20

How much do you tip them?

HmmSureJan · 20/12/2020 16:22

Sorry, those who do. How much? I think I will this year. Hearing them come routinely twice a week has been a real comfort to me when I felt low. If the bins are still being emptied then things are still ticking over.

theconstantinoplegardener · 21/12/2020 23:14

We tip £10 to the "rubbish" collectors, £10 to the "recycling" collectors (they are two different teams where we are) and £10 to the postie because he's unfailingly pleasant and helpful.

Sinful8 · 22/12/2020 05:33

Aye they take all the crap i put out they shouldn't so they get some cash Grin

HmmSureJan · 22/12/2020 07:34

Thank you @theconstantinoplegardener Smile

Slightly off topic but bin men from day 1 have worked all through pandemic .
They can't social distance in there cabs and are at massive risk.
out in all weathers for hours on end no access to toilets or hot drinks.

I think some of the replies on her are just plain fucking rude .

Cao77 · 22/12/2020 08:20

Absolutely not!!! Our bin men are obnoxious, loud and rude... Regularly blocking my drive/road when there is space to park up considerably. Have had my bin tagged incorrectly saying I have not recycled when I have, my inner bin went walkabout after one collection and every sodding week they put the bin back in the middle of my drive blocking it!!!! So in a word no, never will I be tipping the bin men 😡

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 22/12/2020 08:24

Don’t tip because I don’t reliably see them - they come any time between 7 am and 5 pm (and like a PP we have different crews for the rubbish, the garden waste and the compost bin, so I’d have to be on the watch for three separate sets of people today).

CherryRoulade · 22/12/2020 08:26

Absolutely. Ours are funny, charming and helpful.
Help our old folk by getting bins from store rather than insisting they are put out.
Take additional bulky items and all the boxes that don’t fit in the bins.
Often knock on our very eldest nonagenarians doors to say hello and check all is well. Let us know if an outliers bin hasn’t been put out or other reason for concern.
Brilliant service.

Kumquatsquash · 22/12/2020 08:30

How do you tip binmen? Chase them up the road waving a fiver or sellotape a note to the bin? I'd like to tip mine but they are 3 or 4 so giving a fiver between them seems mean.

LondonBus38 · 22/12/2020 08:31

Not this year after I saw them tipping the contents of my green comment post caddy into my black bin.

AnnieLovesGilbert a few of us noticed this happening in the summer, I guessed they were being instructed to do so and a neighbour who works for the local council confirmed it was true. Not entirely sure of the reasoning behind this, particularly the scientific reasoning, but regardless of the reasoning, it it what the bin men were instructed to do, so round here I know they weren't cutting corners. I live in London zone four.

Put an envelope on the bin.

We leave a box of bottled beer out for ours - did it when they came last Friday.
