Can you cancel groceries after the deadline?

I've booked online groceries to arrive at my house on Monday.

But I'm currently stuck at work for complicated Covid reasons (I live in at my job part of the time).

My Christmas groceries need to be cancelled by 11:30pm tomorrow, if at all. But I won't know by then whether I'm released to go home for Christmas or not. If I don't cancel them, will they turn up at my empty house, pile everything in a huge pile on my lawn with the turkey balanced on top and drive off and charge my card? What happens?

(If I do cancel them and then CAN get home, I'll have nothing to eat and have to go out last minute scavenging the shops, which is something I avoid due to working with vulnerable people.)

Once you know what is happening for you even after the deadline, if you won't be available to take them ring customer service and as long as they have enough notice and they are not already packed they should be able to cancel the order for you

@NotanotherboxofFrogs Thank you. I didn't know that was an option.

It's Ocado and the delivery is Monday but cutoff is Friday because it's Christmas.

Sometimes they can if you’ve called them early enough in the day. I’ve had this a few times where I check out with bottles of baileys or rum to reach the minimum limit to reserve the slot, but I forget to the do the shopping. I call Sainsbury’s up first thing and they’re able to cancel and give me a refund.

If you've got a large order including turkey coming I assume you live with others or have people coming for Christmas, can't one of them be there for the delivery?

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 17/12/2020 23:16

They definitely won't have packed them before Sunday as it is most likely on Monday packing so plenty of time if you need it.

Give them a ring. We had a shop booked for last Saturday morning and I got covid symptoms late Friday night and had to book a test for the next morning. The test time was the exact same time as when my delivery was coming. One phone call to customer services and the were able to change the time for me. They will understand, but definitely do get in contact with them.

They're not allowed to drop and go. It would be taken back to store - they would ring you anyway if they arrived and no-one was home. But better - ring customer services, they will be used to that kind of thing.

No, unfortunately not. Complicated family dynamics but I'll be the first to return to the house (assuming I can get away). (Small turkey crown not big 10 - 12 person turkey.)

Thank you all that's very reassuring and gives me breathing room. I wasn't sure whether to just cancel but could easily then get away as planned and have no groceries and be kicking myself.
