To really dislike Xmas cards (well any cards)

People keep sending us Christmas cards. We don’t do Christmas cards, or any cards. And most of the people sending them know this, as they don’t get any from us!

Sometimes do a hand made card from the kids if someone particularly wants one. But generally no. I find them a huge waste of money, example a birthday 15 cards averaging £2 each, £30, in the bin the following day. I would rather have the £30 to put to better use, or people keep their £30 Thankyou very much.

I know some people love them, but it’s almost like people think I might be offended if I don’t get one. But genuinely it would be absolutely fine.

Is it just me?

Waste of paper and money.

You could say the same for the whole of christmas.

Why bother at all? Waste of money.

Yes I could. And I do, I am the Grinch.Grin

I only grit my teeth and bare it for Dh who loves it and the kids, who think I love it too as I'm a good actress for them. But I'm not religious and I think it's wasteful. But I do try and keep it all sustainable as possible. When they are little all presents are charity shop/boot sales and they honestly don't care.

I'm not religious either but the christmas spirit does not escape me.

You don't like waste, so I assume your life must be pretty austere- nothing that is not a "need" is shunned?

You only buy basic unperfumed soap, no make up? Ony utilitarian clothes? No birthday gifts?

Life has been so unremittingly awful this year for so many people, especially the older generation, that sending a card to someone who to show that you have been thinking of them is a nice thing to do.

I guess the Christmas card haters don't have lonely older people in their families. We do, and we think of them often, and phone them, and send birthday cards and Christmas cards.

I don't send cards to people I see every day, nor to workmates, but I do to family members who live far away (which is all of them)

My sister has stopped sending christmas cards.

She has told our 87 year old mother not to expect one.

Poor old Mum ( who doesn't use text, socal media or email) feels she has done something wrong.

Of course not! That's quite a leap!!

I just personally think that buying Christmas cards is a waste. Because that's my opinion. Of course I buy frivolous things. I'm talking about Christmas cards, and I'm a bit bah humbug in general.

Halloween is my thing.

Everyone else can crack on!

I think it comes from being around ex h and now Dh family since I was a teen. Both get into debt for Christmas. I think there is a lot of waste at Christmas for some families. My sil spends hundreds (really) on stoking fillers and Christmas Eve boxes which largely go unnoticed and unused by her children. She thinks I'm terrible as I've got my 4 month old a couple of toys form the charity shop for Christmas. A baby doesn't care.

Just because I don't buy into that myself and I not really into Christmas doesn't mean that I'm some kind of Puritan living in a shed with one mug.

When I was a kid, it was more pared down (my mother was very religious though, so it was all about church and helping others).

So while I think aspects are wasteful for ME, everyone else can have do what they like!

Ginfordinner · 18/12/2020 11:23

I hate excess waste at Christmas and any time of the year. I also don't go overboard on spending at Christmas. I think it is ridiculous to get into debt for just one day of the year.

But I still send Christmas cards to people I know who will appreciate them Grin

Could you write your mum a card and sign it from your sister and just pretend it’s from her? What a shame for your mum, that’s made me feel so sad for her.

MrsAvocet · 18/12/2020 17:34

I tend to only send Christmas cards to people I don't see regularly - though this year that's a few more than usual of course!
I don't buy birthday cards at all now that my children are beyond the age of being invited to classmates' parties. I did send one to my sister a few years ago and she rang me to check I was ok as she thought it might be one of those things you hear about when someone does something really out of character as a way of alerting the outside world to the fact that they are being held hostage.Grin
Basically I think that cards in general are a waste of money and bad for the environment so I don't send many. But it doesn't particularly bother me if other people do, though ones I receive go into the recycling pot pretty quickly.
