To ask you to help me source ethical chocolate

I’m not just talking paying a fair wage (as that may well be done for the adults), but ones that don’t exploit children.

I was watching a documentary (it’s a few years old now) about the chocolate industry and it mentioned Nestle. It was a sad watch but I thought most companies have changed - though from what I gather, Nestle still aren’t doing enough to combat the problem.

I’ve had a google and found Tony’s Chocolonely (are they any good?), but I want to have a variety to choose that are entirely ethical.

Also, are there other companies that should still be avoided? Mars was mentioned a few times in old articles and I can’t tell about now, but I’m still thinking they should be avoided.

What are your votes?

Funnily enough I listened to that episode of the Food Programme the other day and have ordered 3 different bars of Tony chocolonely from Sainsbury's. My shopping is due any minute and I'm v excited

Plussizejumpsuit · 17/12/2020 18:49

Tonys have 2 Christmas flavours. A csby cane and a gingerbread one. I have managed to get the candy can but yet to try. I'd lso recommend the one with pretzel pieces.

edgeware · 17/12/2020 18:50

Tony’s is GREAT.

Hayeahnobut · 17/12/2020 18:51

If you want to be completely ethical, you can order Tony Chocolonely's direct from them. It costs a little more but you're not giving a chunk of your spending to a corporate along the way.

Sexnotgender · 17/12/2020 18:52

Another Tony’s fan here. My favourite is the seasalt caramel in the orange wrapper.

Northernbeachbum · 17/12/2020 18:53

Tony's is great!!!

Jazzhandedintrovert · 17/12/2020 18:54

Montezumas chocolate is made in Sussex and prides itself on being ethically produced - it's pricy though! For everyday, supermarket, lower priced stuff I believe Kinder is one of the the better brands. There's a website that compares different companies so that you can make more informed choices when shopping, i think it's called the good shopping guide.

BusySittingDown · 17/12/2020 18:56

Tony's chocolonely is lovely. Really thick chocolate and ethical.

TrulyOutrageousJem · 17/12/2020 18:57

Art house Meath have chocolate and it’s just a lovely company.

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 17/12/2020 19:02

Divine chocolate. It is AMAZING. Fair trade and the cocoa farmers are all share holders in the business too. They are also committed to empowering women. And it tastes so good.

Divine Chocolate

Tonys is lovely - their version of Toblerone is the dogs bollocks.

tentative3 · 17/12/2020 19:06

Can confirm Tony's candy cane is awesome.

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 17/12/2020 19:07

Oh man, I love Tonys. Especially the salted caramel one

AnnaMagnani · 17/12/2020 19:12

Hotel Chocolat run their own estates so they can specifically focus on ethical growing and projects like eliminating child labour and improving health.

Notstrongandstable · 17/12/2020 19:13

Another Divine fan here..my 9yo picked their advent calendar out a while back and I was chuffed

Turtleturtle81 · 17/12/2020 19:17

Came here to also recommend Tony’s. The one in the yellow wrapper is amazing.

DianaT1969 · 17/12/2020 19:23

I was given 5 bars of Tony's as a gift. Assorted. I wasn't impressed. But I am more of a dark chocolate fan. Lindt dark and Hotel Chocolat dark taste good to me - but I don't know how ethical they are.
How sad that the UK can't talk about Cadbury's as ethical anymore. It was founded on ethical principles. Now owned by Kraft/Montezuma and tastes like glooopy plasticine. Unsustainably sourced palm oil. Mmmm yummy...

ShopoholicIn · 17/12/2020 19:24
