Pies as fast food?

DwangelaForever · 16/12/2020 23:37

Is it an English thing to have pies as fast food? Like at sports events etc? To me a pie is so bloody messy I couldn't cope with eating it standing up. I need a table lol. To me its a nice dinner on a winters night.

Sort of. I think Australia is really big as on pie as a hand held food I read something interesting about that a few years back.

Pie and liquor was a thing in London I think but not many left. Don't think it was hand held. No idea what is in the liquor!

I mean it would be a full pastry job so sort of Cornish pastie rather than shepherds pie idea!

Bluntasduck · 16/12/2020 23:42

I think it's a type of parsley sauce,

Scotch pie at the football is an absolute must in Scotland

Yes you get pies at football stands. (Who ate all the pies?)Think of the nursery rhyme "simple simon met a pieman." Pie in a chippy. Def counted as fast food.

DwangelaForever · 16/12/2020 23:44

I don't like cornish pasties haha I didn't know they were considered pies but I suppose they are? Like I understand Greggs bakes as fast food but I seen on a twitter thread about people having pie AND MASH at a football match?!?!? How can you eat that with crappy wooden/plastic cutlery lol

Yep a pie at the footy is a must have in Australia. They are commonly eaten on road trips as well as most small towns have a bakery that claims to make the best pies. You can also buy pies at petrol stations so they are seen as an on the go food.

If you get a pie, mash and liquor at the football, it comes in a styrofoam box with some plastic cutlery, so it's not eaten with your hands. Liquor is a sort of thin parsley sauce. Proper pie and mash is amazing. Although it's best eaten in one of the very rare pie shops.

NiceGerbil · 16/12/2020 23:49

No no no omg pasties are pasties!

Don't set the good people of Cornwall on me!

I meant a loose comparison whereby a pastie is a sensible food for when you're out and similarly a fully pastry sided not too runny pie could be eaten the same. But they are definitely not the same thing.

yawnsvillex · 16/12/2020 23:50

traditionally made using the water kept from the preparation of the stewed eels

Christ I was right

NiceGerbil · 16/12/2020 23:50

You can eat anything out of a styrofoam thingy with shit cutlery if you're cold hungry and a bit pissed.

yeah pies are most definitely a on the go food in Aus. Amazing on a cold day at the footy, winter road trip lunch or picnic food. a square pie is superior for standing up/car eating - but i do like the challenge of a round pie....
$2 pie day at the servo is insanely busy
i love the american term for single serve, eat on go pies - hand pies - just perfectly self explanatory

myhobbyisouting · 17/12/2020 14:38

Well can you imagine eating fish, chips and mushy peas at the seaside?

What's the difference?

Havanananana · 17/12/2020 14:52

It's all explained in this helpful Youtube video....

Crazycakelady17 · 17/12/2020 14:54

I agree pie mash mushy peas and gravy is a proper northern winter tea however my DH and middle DS would disagree they are season ticket holders and have a pie every home game regardless of weather madness!
