to think Mark Drakeford has fucked up by announcing post-xmas lockdown?

I just think it might encourage people to think ' fuck it - we have lockdown coming anyway, we might as well all meet up now and have a good Christmas before things get all shit and lonely again.'

Whereas in areas where they don't know if lockdown is coming they might be more likely to think 'well, if we don't all meet up now and infection rates don't increase we might avoid another bloody lockdown.'

(I have no skin in the game. I'm not meeting family over Christmas anyway - just wondering if this has been a big tactical error).

Because the South, West and North could be mingling over Christmas.

@IndigoHexagon I agree about tier systems that should be in Wales as they are in Scotland and England.

VenusTiger · 16/12/2020 16:56

OP, just shared this on another thread, here it is too:

@IndigoHexagon

Yep, it’s ridiculous. Probably because Drakeford is Cardiff centric and wants to be appear to be ‘fair’.

I feel for the people of Anglesey, rates are 27 cases per 100k, and trending down. Compare this to Cornwall and Isles of Scilly at 26 cases per 100k and trending up. They are in the lowest English tier!

IndigoHexagon · 16/12/2020 17:18

@LemonadeFromLemons - I’m on Anglesey and we are all very frustrated. Our main industry is tourism which is on its knees at the moment. Most independent restaurants chose to close when it was announced that they had to close at 6pm and not serve alcohol, we are already half closed.

LemonadeFromLemons · 16/12/2020 17:22

@IndigoHexagon

I’m so sorry, hope you guys recover from this. It’s the not knowing for businesses as well. It’s a bad time of year for many between January and March anyway.

VenusTiger · 16/12/2020 17:25

If anyone is interested in the actual stats - I've attached a thread link above - being ignored again -

AllTheThingsHeSaid · 16/12/2020 17:28

I'm in NW Wales. Cases are on the increase here, so I don't see much of a case in only locking down the south.
I understand what the OP means, but Drakeford's announcement today has really bought home the seriousness of the situation here, and I'm making plans to cut back on the people I was going to be seeing this Christmas (which was only very few anyway.) It's really made me think.

Brighterthansunflowers · 16/12/2020 17:53

Everyone I know has been expecting to go into a post Christmas lockdown for weeks now, it’s hardly a shock to any of us. It was warned it would likely be necessary when we had the firebreak lockdown. I think restrictions haven’t been right enough since that ended to be honest, which has contributed to the huge rise in cases.

Of course some selfish dicks will have a last blowout before lockdown but tbh people like that haven’t really been following the rules for a long time now anyway.

User158340 · 16/12/2020 17:55

I just think it might encourage people to think ' fuck it - we have lockdown coming anyway, we might as well all meet up now and have a good Christmas before things get all shit and lonely again.

Surely everyone is already resigned to lockdown in Jan anyway.

The only incentive to not make the most of it over Christmas is to not be part of the January surge in cases.

MushMonster · 16/12/2020 18:00

This time I was not surprised. The secondary schools closure took me by surprise, because you would think they give some notice when it comes to this. But, no, they did not. And it was not till tuesday of this week that they had the idea of providing care for priority workers children! You cannot make it up (they announced secondary closures last thursday afternoon! For who does not live in Wales. Primaries have follow closely, in some parts, which is another ball game when it comes to childcare!)
But I was expecting less allowances for Christmas and the after lockdown.
I just want to know if the secondary schools are going to open or not? So I can plan my life!

TicTacTwo · 16/12/2020 18:00

Yesterday (Monday) they announced that London was moving to tier 3 on Wednesday and there were plenty of pics of people partying. I think that businesses and people need warning and wouldn't want the government to start announcing changes overnight on Twitter to start 6 hours later.

Lockdown in Jan/Feb is inevitable for the other countries too. It's hardly surprising that restrictions would be announced after Xmas. Don't forget that Johnson will be welcoming this as it might keep the chaos caused by No Deal Brexit off the front pages in Jan.

MushMonster · 16/12/2020 18:02

So, for us, there is no change to Christmas plans, as we are only meeting our bubble.
And the lockdown was expected.
But I can see your reasoning.
I said the same about schools closing without much notice and people scrambling around for childcare, that could lead to mixing of more households indoors indeed.

MushMonster · 16/12/2020 18:05

And by the way, I think tge lockdown is needed, as cases are going up and up. And it will not be helped by Christmas meetings.
I am very sad for the retail and restaurants and other business, yet again all shut.
Hopefully we will get the population vaccinated soon.

tempnamechange98765 · 16/12/2020 18:25

We knew it was coming, to be honest we have been able to meet up with three other people from different households in restaurants, pubs etc since the end of the firebreaker over a month ago; other than the first few days after the firebreaker it hasn't felt safe to do that as rates are rocketing all the time.

It's going to be dull especially with the January weather, but it's needed. The firebreaker would've been longer had the FM known furlough was going to be extended.

Strangedayindeed · 16/12/2020 18:27

Anyone with any cop on knew a post Christmas lockdown was coming. Come on! It was so obviously going to happen. January is a quiet month anyway it just makes sense.

MushMonster · 16/12/2020 22:28

They need to tell us though whether schools will be open or not.
